Goten refers to Vegeta as Uncle?
It's been awhile since I have watched the Boo arc in Japanese, not to mention this is my second time touching the the Boo arc of Kai.
So, me and a buddy of mine were just hanging out when we decided to watch the Boo arc of Kai (In Japanese of course). I believe it was episode 122? I can't remember.
Throughout the whole episode I noticed Goten refers to Vegeta as Uncle? This is news to me.
Never have I seen Goten refer to Vegeta as Uncle before. Can someone here tell me if this is in the manga and the original Japanese dub of DBZ, I know for a fact that this ain't the case for any English translation. Could it have been the subtitles?
I don't know, any help would be great.

I'm pretty sure it's common in Asian cultures for a son to call his father's close friend "uncle".

Vegeta and Goku were close friends?Marco Polo wrote:I'm pretty sure it's common in Asian cultures for a son to call his father's close friend "uncle".

Normal and common. We tend to call "uncle" some (many, actually) people, I thought it was the same in other countries.
And Son Goten calls Vegeta "uncle" in Dragon Ball GT, at least in my dub.

When he blew himself up he said he was doing it for Goku as well so I'd say in a way they were.ZazamPow wrote:Vegeta and Goku were close friends?

It's not just in Japan or Indian, a large majority of African countries use the greeting format of calling a male adult of someone they know "Uncle", as well.

Re: Goten refers to Vegeta as Uncle?
Goku himself called Gohan "Grandpa" even though they weren't related. It isn't a very big deal, although still surprising since I've never seen Goten call him that.

Think about it. Goten probably visited Trunks all the time to hang out and play, and Vegeta was his dad. He probably saw Vegeta as a stand up regular guy.

It's similar to when I call my girlfriend's mom "mom" or my main man (Can't say word) sister "sister".

Did you hear what Japanese term Goten used? Was it oji-san? Because that's pretty common in anime, especially from kids. For all I know, it might be a general respectful term for an adult male like "mister" as well as meaning uncle. I've seen it translated as mister before anyway.
I'm re-watching Dragon Ball GT in full on my blog. Check it out if you're interested in my thoughts on the series as I watch through it!

That would be my best guess.Saiga wrote:Did you hear what Japanese term Goten used? Was it oji-san? Because that's pretty common in anime, especially from kids. I think this is a bit different considering Gohan is more like his adoptive father. Goku even thought they were related until Raditz appeared.ZazamPow wrote:Goku himself called Gohan "Grandpa" even though they weren't related.

Yeah, Goten says "ojisan" (in the manga anyway; I'm assuming the anime is the same), literally "grandfather", but like you thought it's often used as a respectful term for older men who you're not necessarily related to.Saiga wrote:Did you hear what Japanese term Goten used? Goku actually tells Bulma right at the start of the series that Gohan found him out in the mountains. Bulma even comments on how nonchalant Goku is over the fact that his real parents apparently abandoned him. So Goku never thought he was related to Grandpa Gohan.Makaioshin wrote:I think this is a bit different considering Gohan is more like his adoptive father. Re: Goten refers to Vegeta as Uncle?
I seem to recall Gohan calling Piccolo "Uncle" at one point during his training. Remember thinking it was weird, especially since it didn't seem like they were that close yet.
There is no Dragon Ball canon.
