Why is there so much dislike for GT?
I actually really like GT. To me it seems that the biggest reason people dislike it is for 2 reasons. 1: it is strictly the Goku show. (GT=Goku Time) and 2: the series is very inconsistent in regards to previously established lore.
To me, ever since the the beggining, Goku has always been the focus series. Sure, this is on a whole other level than before but it just doesn't bother me. I felt that other characters at least got their moments to shine. At least more so than some people give credit for. As for the 2nd point, the show was never very consistent to begin with. There have always been plot holes and continuity issues as far back as Dragon Ball and people rarely complain about those.
So I like GT. If you don't I would love to hear why.

I never hated it and I thought hate for it was just a vocal minority.I was genuinely surprised. I did hear many compelling arguments so I dont think its entirely unjustified. Liking it is also justified.

Re: Why is there so much dislike for GT?
I'll be honest. I only watched the dubbed version, so I'm biased. This version plays the same damn theme in every scene, so I was bored as **** watching it. That's my main gripe; it's boring. That music. **** that music!!
But besides that, I also dislike a lot of the choices they made:
- Why make Goku small? Just...why? It was such an incredibly stupid thing to do. At least make him grow after the black star dragon ball saga, for goodness sakes.
- Why is Trunks in that ship with Goku and Pan? This is so ****ing random. And while not something GT did, why is Trunks so bland? I expected him to grow up to be like Gary Oak: Spoiled and full of himself, which could have made Goten his Ash.
- Why does Pan get so much screen time? I understand wanting to develop the character, but she's the co-star from start to finish. Just found it weird.
- Everything about Bra...I just hate. While I'm at it, Uub was the biggest waste of a character.
- Character redesigns piss me off. Gohan, Vegeta, and Goten all have similar hair styles.
- Goku time, as you mentioned. He's so overpowered. Majuub and SSJ Vegeta could not touch Super 17, but SSJ Goku put up a fight. Base Goku was able to beat both Cell and Frieza at the same time as though they were fodder. The dragon arc was a great opportunity to develop all the characters by allowing them all to take on a dragon, but instead, Goku takes them all out with co-star Pan tagging along (seriously, wtf). All the other characters were just fodder as well, and I didn't enjoy Goku on screen either because he's....****ing Kid Goku! Argh...sdfsdfsdf. They did a very bad job utilizing the cast and developing anyone. In the end of the day, I found myself not caring about anyone in DBGT.
- The entire Super 17 thing, short as it may be, was like an incredibly horrid fanfiction.
- All the main villains (i.e. Bebi, Yi Xing Long, and Super 17) were generic as ****. With Toriyama, we always get a fresh new major villain, but these guys were all worse than many of the movie villains. "I'm going to beat you and then destroy/take over the universe! Why? Because I'm evil! BWAHAHAHA! *mischievously rub hands together*" Sad thing is, despite their uninspired personalities, the dragons and Bebi had very interesting backstories. The latter had a good motive, but the delivery of the character was awful. Frieza, Cell, Buu, and Beerus are all so distinct. Cell being the closest to a Toei villain, but so much cooler and interesting.
- The art is so gritty. Everything is so...blah. Added to my boredom. DB and DBZ are so bright and colorful. I wish DBGT looked like those animated Heroes clips.
- The sense of adventure the first saga was trying to convey is lost because this all takes place post-Buu saga. These are characters who can fly through planets in minutes. With Goku, there is no danger. And if there is, it feels contrived and silly. Even when Goku finds someone apparently stronger than Majin Buu, which is bullshit, he only needs SSJ to take him out.
But all in all, I just found it boring. Plain and simply.

Given how people have been slobbering over the same concepts repackaged in the new movies, apparently they were just mad that the name "Toriyama" wasn't on it.

I dislike GT because...
1. Goku is weakened. They couldn't come up with something more overwhelming than Z, so they chose a negative and easier way.
2. Not only does Goku look like a kid, but his personality is infantilized. Both Pan and Goku are so childish in an annoying way that they often get on my nerves.
3. Everyone is bubble-headed. Their behaviors never make sense.
4. Oh, Goku is in a pinch! Now it's time to go Super Saiyan! Seriously, we don't need that kind of annoying tease anymore.
5. Lame ideas. 17 was actually planned to be the strongest android? A board game world? Oh, man.
6. The freaking unfunny dance. Who can enjoy this piece of crap?
7. Battle scenes are badly choreographed. They look far more underwhelming than those in Z.
8. Character designs suck. Nakatsuru surely is a very talented animator, but he's really bad at designing Toriyama-esque characters.
9. The entire show seems to be tageted at younger children compared to Z.

3. Could you elaborate?
4. True.
5. I actually like those 2 :/ Especially the board game. It was a nice change of pace from just fighting. Goku has to think his way out. I thought it was refreshing.
6. I dont think it was AWFUL it was annoying though.
7. I thought they fine. Definitely not as epic as the ones in Z though.
8. Toriyama himself did a lot of the designs.

Re: Why is there so much dislike for GT?
Not a hater, but I can see why others are:
The Black Dragon Saga
This saga is quite frankly an awful way to start the show and a terrible saga in general. FUNimation didn't even air them at first on Toonami since the ratings would sour like they did in Japan. It tried to be both Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z simultaneously yet failed in both regards. The comedy was so forced and juvenile, and the action was too little and unimpressive. Not to mention there were the plot holes.... by god, the plot holes!! Granted, Dragon Ball was never had the most coherent story out there (especially in the very later parts) but GT pretty much says "FUCK YOU!!!" to logic. I mean, why don't they just take out Zuunama and be done with it? Why hasn't anyone ever stopped him? He wasn't even causing earthquakes just predicting them.
The Fight Scenes
There were a few good ones here and there but they were generally slow, and had uninteresting choreography. Too much ki blast spam, and not enough hand-to-hand combat. Not to mention the power level scaling was all over the place.
Pan and Giru
Two of the annoying characters in all of Dragon Ball, yes? Pan showed a lot of potential at the end of DBZ being the daughter of Gohan and Videl (a hybrid and human) as well as the granddaughter of the legendary Goku but in GT she either played the role as support at best, or Dumbass-in-Distress at worst. Not to mention she was undeservedly arrogant, selfish, and a real whiner to boot (seriously there's almost not one episode she's featured in when where she's not bitching or moaning over something). To top it all, she doesn't even respect her own grandfather. You should always respect your grandparents even if they're just a few years older than you. At first, I didn't hate her too much but now I wanna see her die... and she's only a child!
Oh, and did I forget to mention she's an idiot?
Giru is just plain annoying! He's always freaking out and being like "Giru! Giru! Giru! Giru! Giru! Giru!............" and I'm all like this. Also, his relationship with Pan comes off as pretty abusive. Why does he deal with so much bit.... I mean... brattiness? Grow some nuts n' bolts, and show her who's boss.
Goku Time
Probably the biggest issue with GT. It glorifies Goku too much. I know Goku's the main character (even know writing demands Pan or Oob should be) thus would naturally come up on top but at least give the other characters a real chance to shine. Instead, all they do is existed to make Goku look good. They made Trunks nothing but a submissive, stressed-out babysitter. They needlessly kill Piccolo off for cheap drama. Oob was supposed to be Goku's successor but ended up being treated like he was Yamcha. Even Pan, like I mentioned before, ended up playing second fiddle to Goku despite her constant presence.
So overall, is GT horrible and deserving of it's rep? No, but is it good and worth people's time? Not a chance, only for the most hardcore of fans willing to overlook it's glaring flaws and inconsistencies.

We watched the characters grow in DB and DBZ. Not just as characters, but in power.See, I get where you are coming from. I just feel that apart from some of the aesthetic choices, most of those complaints can be attributed to the previous 2 series as well or at least some that similar. Why does this one cross the line?
In DBGT, they are all already old as **** and super-powered. The characters are so poorly utilized, it's hard to root for any of them. Additionally, the main characters (Goku and Pan) just aren't all that likable. I know...Goku...not likable. Making him a kid again did that. Actual DB Kid Goku was a child who knew nothing of the world, and it was hilarious seeing that. GT Kid Goku feels like a polarizing character. There are moments he is incredibly wise, which reflect the knowledge he has as an experienced fighter, and other times they try to capture the essence of his DB self. It's cute when you see that innocence in Adult Goku and an actual little kid, but not an adult in a child's body. I don't know how better to express this, but it made me dislike Goku anytime he wasn't a SSJ4.
The reason people love DB and DBZ are the character interactions. The characters. That is the main thing. It's more important than the adventures and the action and the transformations and the music (only present in animation). DBGT fails in this category. I watch it, and I truly don't give a **** about anyone. Combined with bad decisions, design choices, and awful music, and it's just an excruciatingly boring experience.

Re: Why is there so much dislike for GT?
I'll admit I'm the last person to judge GT since I was so bored with it that I'm only now forcing myself to watch it all from start to finish, but the execution of the pacing and tone is spectacularly off. It's like it wants to be the Pilaf arc of DB, but nothing of consequence happens in the first 24 episodes.

Re: Why is there so much dislike for GT?
Dragon Ball Z gave characters aside from Goku the chance to shine, I felt that wasn't done well in Dragon Ball GT and that's the main reason I don't enjoy it as much - I still like it though. Pan was an awful character and I just didn't think that Trunks' was served justice and no I wasn't expecting a clone of Future Trunks. The series did have some great moments for some of the characters though, I especially liked Piccolo's sacrifice and the interactions between 17 and 18.
Bruce Faulconer's score was sorely missed for the dub too, Mark Menza just didn't do the trick for me.

Re: Why is there so much dislike for GT?
I liked GT because as a kid, I never distinguished different series. Dragon Ball was Dragon Ball to me, I liked anything to do with it. Like Batman. The Batman from Super Friends was just as much my favorite as from the Animated Series (that sounds so terribly wrong). Now, as an adult, I realize that the show is just boring. It really is. Sucks to say, but it's true. I like that the story is like a "life goes on" theme. The characters all grow and change (except for a few). Even Vegeta changed! I like that. I like that it took place more in cities rather than open fields. I liked the ideas. I just think the way everything was strung together was lackluster. The idea was much better than the execution in my opinion.

The dub FUNi gave it certainly didn't help it's cause. FUNi's Kid Goku, Pan, Satan and Gill had some of the most annoying voices i've ever heard in my life. And Mark Menza's 'music' was a headache inducing joke

Re: Why is there so much dislike for GT?
There are many reasons I dislike GT:
- Bad pacing
- Uneven tone
- Ugly character designs
- Lazy animation
- Goku hogging the spotlight to ridiculous extents
- Pan
- Oob character being colossally wasted
- The most absurd power scaling ever in an anime
- The Super 17 arc was a just pointless and a waste of time.
- The Baby ac was just a recycled version of the Saiyan arc and the Majin Boo arc

Re: Why is there so much dislike for GT?
Oh man, I don't know about the voice acting because I never even watched the "Green Bricks" season sets that I bought so MAYBE it's not the voices, but jeez, that music is soooo horrifically bad! Many fans' ONE good thing about the series (the music) and not only did they come up with their own soundtrack, which I guess is understandable, but THAT was it? It just sounded so dull, dreary, repetitive, cheap (sounded like it was done on one of those kiddy keyboards which are like 2 feet long not even including all the keys), and was just straight up depressing to listen to.Kakacarrottop wrote:The dub FUNi gave it certainly didn't help it's cause. FUNi's Kid Goku, Pan, Satan and Gill had some of the most annoying voices i've ever heard in my life. And Mark Menza's 'music' was a headache inducing joke
