Why is there so much dislike for GT?

I dislike it because I can't stop falling asleep when I try to watch it. I was hoping the "GT Review of Awesomeness" would help me get through it, but it seems like they may be facing similar issues...

I could turn the question around, what about GT was that different concerning his characterization? What was a joke about his character? He's always been childlike.

In the beginning of GT, Goku was willing to sit around and let the Earth blow up 'till Chi-Chi and Videl talked him into it just cuz he didn't feel like getting off his lazy ass. The Goku we know and love would never do that. He's usually among the first to join on a mission that would decide the fate of all humanity and the first to join in on an adventure.

Maybe afterlife really did change him.

In a nutshell, it's sheer Toei Goku. It's far from Toriyama's Goku, who is pure-hearted yet sometimes intelligent.

In a writing stand point of view, GT is the weakest out of the three shows. DBZ may have the strongest writing but the main cast, villains, humor and writing was handle much better in my opinion.

Goku got much smarter and savvy as the series progressed though. And his "big eater" characteristics were downplayed quite a bit from his teenage years and beyond. And Goku was always much more naive than actually stupid. Hell, arguably the most constant characteristic about Goku is that he is fast learner. So Goku really isn't an idiot in reality, just uneducated. In GT, however, he acts like a total jackass constantly.

For me, it's not that I feel he's that out of character, but he's just unlikable while he's trapped in a kid's body. Goku's naivety and ignorance is funny/cute in an adult, and even cuter in a boy who knows nothing of the world, but it doesn't feel right when he's an adult stuck in a child's body. The entire thing is so polarizing because it's apparent they're trying hard to capture the essence of his character, but they don't know which Goku to emulate--the adult from DBZ or the kid from DB? One minute, he's displaying a level of silliness more prominent in the original Kid Goku, and the other, he's a savant teaching Cell and Frieza the fundamental flaws of their fighting techniques.

It just feels off.

I can't help but note that the driving episode was written by Aya Matsui, who was also the head writer for GT (at least initially).

It's just kind of funny to me to see them ranked against each other, but I don't remember enough details about GT Gokuu's intelligence myself.

He wanted to stay home rather than go on an adventure that would decide the fate of the entire Earth, he couldn't count to 3, he avoided going to a hospital cuz he automatically assumes he would get a shot, and he purposely fed Super 17 energy (trying to overfeed him is a pretty weak explanation).

Besides Base Goku vs Rildo, none of the battles had the 'High-Quality' feel. Poor animation, terrible choreography & weakass OST BGM's.
