I don't know about you, but personally, I found the dissonance between his brutality and the mordant quips that accompanied it rather darkly amusing.
That's not Freeza. He's not a Saturday morning cartoon. He's almost apathetic until you piss him off. I don't know what to say other than I didn't find any of the lines you mentioned as particularly dark. It feels too one the nose cartoonish evil. The delivery didn't help matters.
The biggest truths aren't original. The truth is ketchup. It's Jim Belushi. Its job isn't to blow our minds. It's to be within reach.

Which is why I agree with Mike/VegettoEX:

If Linda Young's Freeza is what you prefer, then you don't actually like Freeza. Or at the very least, prefer not-really-Freeza.

That's not fair to say. People can read the manga and like Frieza, but still prefer Linda Young over Ayres as the character's VA.

That doesn't mean he doesn't like Freeza, it just means that he likes a different version of Freeza. That's like saying a fan of the Dub isn't actually a fan of Dragon Ball. It's just a different version.

It isn't actually Freeza. It's another country's interpretation of the character that contradicts the original anime and the source material.

So are all modern superhero movies not the real movies for those superheros?

Yeah, when you drastically alter the personality of a character, it's really not the same character anymore.

You know, people don't have to dislike one portrayal to like the other more... >_>;

True, but it doesn't feel as much a different interpretation of the same character as it does a completely different character. Like her, fine, but they aren't the same.

A big difference is that American superheroes typically have numerous authors with their own take that constantly evolves. DB is one story written by one man.

The voice isn't intrinsically linked with that dialogue though, Young did a number of video games with accurately translated dialogue in between Z and Kai and did a reasonable job of portraying the real Freeza there. Of course, I'm still in the Ayres camp myself, but I feel the point should be made there. (Of course, if the season 3 dialogue is what they prefer to the original, then yeah, that's not Freeza at all.)

Fair enough, but I don't agree that she's good even with better dialog, just less bad.

Pauline Newstone was pretty damn awesome as Freeza! Sounds snake-like and somewhat similar to Ayres actually! Her pissed off Freeza is fantastic! Her speaking voice has a hint of a faux-British accent when Freeza speaks. Behind the voice actors has a great clip of Newstone speaking and getting mad. It suits Freeza

But Ayres wins this time.

But listen to pissed off Newstone Freeza here! It's awesome!

Yeah it is! :)
Sean Schemmel is THE MAN! :)

Me- "Also, before anyone mentions it, Schemmel's interview was from nearly 15 years ago. He paid a brief visit to Kanzenshuu's forums a few years back and earned legendary respect that cancels out anything he said from that long ago. :D"

That's far from Saturday morning cartoon fare; I would very much be interested in seeing if you can provide an example of one analogous to FUNimation Frieza. Not to mention that's such a broad and ill-defined category in itself.
This is a Saturday morning cartoon villain. Would you say he conforms to your concept of one?

I do like Frieza--I like FUNimation's Frieza.

Yeah! She had such a short time as Freeza she goes unnoticed. Her acting is superb! I'm glad I got some people such as yourself come in with an open mind and see how good she was.

Young sounds nothing like Newstone, and Young as Freeza is a complete miscast. Young could not portray that aristocratic, but authoritative voice like Ayres or Newstone can do.

Saturday morning cartoon villains often make threats and cheesy jokes to the heroes about how they are going to hurt them. While not a cartoon, it might as well be, but Power Rangers villains often delivered that kind of dialog. Some of those things could be something Skeletor or Shredder would say.
I like FUNimation's Freeza.
Which is what we should call it because it's not Lord Freeza.

I personally never found Newstone's Freeza voice very authoritative at all. To me, she made Freeza sound like a frail old woman even more so than Young.
