Re: Besides Toriyama, who would you like to see write DB?
If we're talking manga, that's a little hard for me to choose, because most of my favorite authors don't necessarily have the same sort of feel that Toriyama brings to Dragon Ball (though I guess for the purpose of this discussion, that's almost part of the point?), not to mention the different art styles...but I'd be lying if I said I wouldn't be interested in seeing what Nobuhiro Watsuki (Rurouni Kenshin, Buso Renkin, etc.) would bring to the table. Not to mention the action scenes would look AMAZING.
I'd also be pretty interested in seeing Masakazu Katsura (I"s, Video Girl Ai, Zetman) perhaps do some kind of one-shot serial depicting how a few of the romances in the series might have actually gotten started. It's an area Toriyama clearly isn't interested in or able to tell us a story about, but one that Katsura excels at. And the two have worked together before and are even best friends, so that's a factor too.
If we're talking about doing a movie or special though - Mamoru Hosoda (The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Summer Wars, Wolf Children, etc.). It'd never happen since he's doing his own things now, but he came from Toei back in the day, and the man is just an incredible story teller, especially when it comes to showing us what's going on in a character's head. I would love to see what he'd be able to do with the world of Dragon Ball. Seriously, I drool at the mere idea.

OHMYGODYES WATSUKI ART!!! *DROOLS*
Dammit Gyt, you knew I'd do that.
But yeah, out of all the manga I've read, Watsuki's Kenshin work would be an excellent fit for Dragon Ball. And that aaaaaarrrrtttttt *drools*

I'd like to take the job, because I'd do something other than have Goku take care of everything and all the other characters are basically useless fodder to show how strong the villains are.
That being said, no disrespect to Toriyama of course, I'll always be a huge fan of his work. It's his series, he's free to do as he wishes with it, and it's always been Goku-centric. I just feel like he's created so many other interesting characters that were never used to their full potential (at least in my mind) and it's sad.

Quentin Tarantino.
I joke...but Eiichiro Oda for sure. It was mentioned on the FnF rthread the other day. Some sort of collaboration with Toriyama would be wonderful.
While Luffy always wins at the end of the day as well, Oda always makes sure he gives all of his characters their moment in each arc. That would be a welcome addition to DB material I think! Along with a lot of other things.

As fan of One Piece, that is pretty spot on!
I take it you're not a fan of One Piece, Rocketman.

Re: Besides Toriyama, who would you like to see write DB?
To be honest though, the last two movies of DBZ are already not far enough from Saint Seiya... I mean this scene with Vegeta punching a God who has just said, that he wouldn't be able to do anything to him, as he isn't a deity, feels A LOT like the scene from Tenkai-Hen when Seiya punched Apollo after him saying almost the same thing. SSJ God is like God Cloth which rises your power high enough, and lets you hurt Gods, who were much stronger than you. And in the end both of the main heroes lost, while technically won, both Seiya and Goku surprised Apollo and Beerus, but didn't defeat them, which led to them sparing the Earth.GokuRules987 wrote:

I imagine it more as Vegeta supposedly dying, but appearing just a few chapters later, seeing his grave, and being surprised and annoyed by people burying him too fast.Rocketman wrote:Oda?

Re: Besides Toriyama, who would you like to see write DB?
Yeah, Masami Kurumada of Saint Seiya/Ring ni Kakero fame would be great (would be a lot more actiony than Dragon Ball though). They're already fighting gods with god forms, so it's already at the end of Saint Seiya anyways.
Or Mitsutoshi Shimabukuro (Toriko) could be nice, as Toriko has a good balance of action and comedy. Goku's heaven totally is Gourmet World anyways, it's fitting
Yudetamago (Kinnikuman) might be fun, they do action comedy well. Goku'd totally love to wrassle.
Hirohiko Araki (Jojo's Bizarre Adventure) might make for the most unique choice of my mind. Imagine following Dragon Ball through the generations with creative new powers and story styles every time.
For a marital arts focus, it would be nice to see Tetsuo Hara and Buronson (Fist of the North Star) give their go at it. Could get quite crazy though. But I'd be down with seeing Goku take people out with actual martial arts over his traditional style.

Oda would be perfect, they write with the same spirit, but he is too busy with One Piece. What I would really like to see is a new Dragon Ball manga where different writers and artists would write stories in the Dragon Ball universe, with Toriyama supervising, kind of the way Marvel and DC comics are done. The stories wouldn't have to be related, and could involve any character and take place at any point in the time line.

All of these names people keep saying are funny ways of spelling "Watsuki." I of course agree with everyone's excellent tastes, but must ask that they check their spelling.

I haven't read any of his other works, but aside from Rurouni Kenshin's amazing action scenes and his extremely likeable characters (and the comedy somewhat), what does he possess in common with Toriyama?Kamiccolo9 wrote:All of these names people keep saying are funny ways of spelling "Watsuki." Surprised no one mentioned this. Stan Lee. The guy got major talent and created some of the world's most popular superheroes. He can capture the charm of DB easily and have great action. The writers of Ultimate Spiderman (2000-2009) can also do a decent job on an OVA(Not sure about movie).

You do not want Brian Michael Bendis anywhere near Dragon Ball.Kamiccolo9 wrote:Thinking outside the box, I wanna see Stan Lee write a Dragon Ball story. The guy gets that you have to have the right mix of action and comedy, and he's got the credentials for both.

Not denying it, Rurouni Kenshin is one of the best manga I've read. I just don't see how it captures the Dragon Ball feel. Could be wrong, though, he may have published another manga that's very similar to it and I just haven't read it yet.Kamiccolo9 wrote:Except Watsuki does it better than Toriyama could ever hope to do. Re: Besides Toriyama, who would you like to see write DB?
Because Bendis has the most bloated writing style ever, and decompressed storytelling should be nowhere near Dragon Ball, which is already blasted for being dragged out as it is. I like Bendis, but the way he writes would be terrible for Dragon Ball. Imagine if the manga were as slowly paced as the anime.TheGmGoken wrote:What's wrong with Brian's ultimate Spiderman? Bendis has pacing issues on par with Oda (if not worse, considering monthly releases vs weekly).
Also he has a history of not doing great at writing extremely powerful characters ("street-level" characters like Daredevil and teenage Spider-Man are more his speed).

George Perez would also be a great Dragon Ball writer cause he was the one who gave pre crisis superman powers like sneezing solar systems and carrying dozens of chained planets from their dying galaxies
