As a starter, I'd like to ask:
-Which of the movies do you recommend? I've seen the Broly trilogy and Fusion Reborn so far. I'll probably get around to them all eventually, but what should I prioritize?
-Were even the 45 minute ones shown theatrically?

-My ranking of the ones I've seen:
1. Bio Broly (What can I say, I love Mr. Satan and I think this features better Trunks-Goten-Broly fighting than the previous movie)
2. Fusion Reborn (Only because it's just so trippy. Plus S/O to Gogeta and his sparkles)
3. Broly: Legendary Super Saiyan (I like this because it actually has a plot, but I don't like how they made Vegeta so scared. It felt out of character)
4. Broly: Second Coming (It holds a special place for being the first DB thing I fully saw, but this is barely a movie and more a 45 minute fight scene. With that said, I think Trunks
peeing on Broly is just an incredible and hilarious moment. S/O to Trunks for that. Also family Kamehameha is epic)
Also, Battle of the Gods blows all these movies out of the water, which is so obvious to me that I chose to make this about the first 13 movies. I guess if you guys want you can tell me if any of the 1-13 films outdo it in any way, but I've asked enough. Happy Easter and happy foruming!

Yeah, there's been a decent number of threads dedicated to these movies over the years. They tend to pop up every so often, so if you look back through this section, you're bound to stumble upon a few of them. I may or may not be present in a sizeable chunk of them.
All of the movies were indeed shown theatrically, but they were screened alongside other Toei films in what was known as the
'Toei Anime Fair'. Check out Kanzenshuu's 'Movie Guide' for more information:

In terms of recommendations, I'd say the first three DBZ movies, along with DBZ Movie 6 (and 5, I guess) and DBZ Movie 13. DBZ Movies 1, 2 and 3 tend to be quite highly regarded within the fandom. A lot of that is down to nostalgia, but they all have their strengths that make them deserving of the praise they receive. Each one boasts a very old school-sort of atmosphere, a kick-ass soundtrack, fantastic animation and well-choreographed fight scenes. DBZ Movie 6 is probably a bit of a weird one to recommend; I know a lot of people aren't too big on it, but there's a lot in there that makes it worth seeing. The animation is inconsistent throughout this one, but at its peak there are some very interesting and cool set pieces. It's also Vegeta's first appearance in a film, so there's some fun exchanges between him and Goku. The fight scenes also range from awesome to slightly crazy, there's a nice sprinkling of comedy throughout, Yajirobe makes an appearance, Metal Coola is a fascinating villain and there's also
that scene. Yes, the soundtrack is also great in this one as well. But I guess if you're gonna watch that one, you gotta watch DBZ Movie 5 first. I hold this one in high regard because of my nostalgia for it, but to anyone else, I'm sure it just looks like the typical DBZ movie formula being executed to a tee. DBZ Movie 13 is probably the most story-heavy of the lot; it's one of the few that introduces an original protagonist, we get a lot of great character moments, there's a decent amount of back-story and the animation and atmosphere is incredible- it feels like a real movie. The ending isn't to everyone's liking, but it's worth watching due to how unique it is. Only issue is, if you're gonna watch the Japanese version, the sound quality on the Double Feature is absolutely rubbish. You're fine if you're watching it on any other English release, though.
I know this is specifically a
DBZ Movie thread, but I'd also suggest checking out the 10th Anniversary Movie as well. Not only does have some of the nicest animation the franchise has ever seen, but it boasts the longest run-time of the original 17 and it works well as a stand-alone feature that you can show to anyone without having to explain anything.
Yeah, I wouldn't say any of these outdo
Battle of Gods, but that's just me. Opinions, y'know.
