That site lists some alternate dates but nothing past June. Surely all those April 16th releases are false, I'm sure we'd have heard something if it were that soon.
Most of the Latin American countries will have the movie on June.

Well that really helpful, good find. Battle of Gods did pretty well in the America's but was pretty much glossed over in Europe so that's one area that would be beneficial for this movie to expand upon.

I don't know about these movies making $200 million but if they gave it the right push I do think it could reach $100 million though I'm not expecting that from this film.

If Battle of Gods made $50 million then I'd be happy with anything over $60 million with this one.

Looks like we got a date for Hong Kong too now, May 21.

I guess I should point out that this movie could be really difficult to work out how much it's made because unfortunately and for some unexplained reason Box Office Mojo don't track all the individual markets, they do for some but the majority haven't been tracked since November.

There could be an overall figure dropped in eventually but specifically it might require better searching skills than I'm probably capable of.

Anyway there's only a little over 6 days to go now, With Battle of Gods we heard something on release day because they said it did 47% of what One Piece Film Z and did ¥354 million so perhaps we'll hear something about how RoF has done in relation to BoG but yeah it looks like it could do with making at least ¥400 million on opening day.

johnboy1 wrote:Fun fact: Battle of Gods got a (just barely) wide release in the United States despite not being rated by the MPAA. So what, right? Wrong. That's damn-near unheard of, since most mall-chain theaters are forbidden by the terms of their leases from showing NC-17 or unrated films. That's a gigantic chunk of potential screens that are completely off-limits. Only one other film in the past 17 years, 2003's Indigo, managed an unrated wide release, and that was largely due to the filmmakers having friends in high places/being relentless in their pursuit of any possible venue that might show it.

I'm curious to see if the Stateside theatrical release of RF will be just as big.
It's not really lease based, it's based on numbers (I'm sure somewhere there are lease based ones, but I haven't seen or heard of one of those in a long time.) Most people won't see unrated or NC-17 films. Almost all bigger theaters at this point air events during downtime in the middle of the week and sometimes for the weekend when it's a bit slower.

And plenty of event distribution (which Battle of Gods was done as) are unrated.

And BoG wasn't the biggest unrated since Indigo that has public numbers we know (and as I recall while Indigo is dated as 2003 because of it's premiere, it's theatrical release was in 2005, which means it wasn't even the biggest unrated film the year it got it's theatrical release.) Many film events don't distribute their numbers after the fact, BoG did because Funimation had marketing reasons to get the numbers out there (this also that doesn't take into account that all the information I can find suggests that many of the places Indigo was in weren't theaters, but were counted as such for distribution numbers by the films distributor. The film was shoved out widely using group buying from places, which was able to 'sell out' those temporary venues for one weekend, that way they could use the 'crazy sell outs' for marketing later.)

Edited/tweaked some things to clarify.

Such a high-profile success would basically be a rerun of the Hays Code's disintegration back in the 60s. Once studios realized they could completely ignore the content guidelines and still make money, it went the way of the dodo, and it was only a fear of government-imposed content regulation that caused the current system to be created in the Code's place. That fear is less likely to come true today than it was back in the 60s.

I can't believe Wrath Of Dragon performed so underwhelming in the box office. It had some of the best animation the franchise has ever seen. And prior to BOG, had the best story in any of the Dragon Ball movies hands down. Man, you can honestly tell that at that stage the popularity of the Dragon Ball franchise was really starting to wane.

That fear is less likely to come true today than it was back in the 60s.
That fear is less likely partially BECAUSE the ratings system is a 'self policing' system which gets the government off their back.

And remember, the group that gives out the ratings is not a third party. The MPAA is a trade association specifically setup to advance the goals of the six major studios. Part of that is keeping the government off their back about content (whether the ratings are correct or not is a entirely different argument.) It doesn't behoove them to fight a system they themselves helped build as a wall against the government getting involved (there being a big difference in this case between a proper release and specialty events that at most get a handful of screenings aimed at a specific audience, and very often get ONE screening.)

In general the only times the ratings system really gets called out is one of four things:
1- Director disagrees with a rating his film has gotten
2- A generic argument over how appropriate violence is over sexuality
3- Someone making a movie ABOUT the MPAA
4- Harvey Weinstein wants some free advertising and press

It's best to think of the ratings as they actually are. They aren't a big legal thing. It's a voluntary system used to keep the government and people who tend to complain to the government off the industry's back. And when you consider you have to pay to get a rating... it just didn't matter for the plan they had for BoG. Whether it will for Resurrection F... I can't really say (there are some reasons to get a rating even if you don't plan a wide theatrical release, but that's a completely different set of arguments and discussions.) Hope this helped explain the logic to you a bit.

Yeah it is odd, it's not like the series had finished at that point either.

Anyway some additional info.

Usual Locations (~43% of Market) - Saturday (04/18) - Seating/Showtimes

#Seats [#Theaters/#Showtimes], Film (Distributor) Week of Release
01. 295,007 [130/990] (31.2% 3D), Dragon Ball Z: Revival of F (Toei) NEW
02. 286,419 [129/844], Detective Conan: Sunflowers of Inferno (Toho) NEW
03. 198,254 [134/897] (1.8% 3D), Furious 7 (Toho-Towa) NEW

I'd forgot that Japan are quite in front of UK and US, it's already nearly 3pm over there so this time tomorrow maybe there will be some kind of news of how it's done.

Again Battle of Gods made ¥354 million opening day and ¥684 million opening weekend with 561,000 tickets sold. The guy who mainly keeps track of all the Box Office for Japan also said this.

"It's going to be a close race. The Japanese Box-Office is always at its best when multiple event films open at the same time. Both films will very likely earn over 500,000 admissions, if not 600,000+ admissions over the weekend, setting the bar quite high for all the Summer releases to come.

I'll post some advance ticket sales tomorrow."

So whether it'll end up being #1 or not we'll see.

I thought BOG was rated by the MPAA? My ticket for the movie says rated PG and being rated PG is the right rating for the movie in my opinion.

Battle of Gods was not rated by the MPAA. Most theaters use a marker similar to 'NR' for films without ratings. If it was PG then someone put it in their system wrong.

Funimation does rate all (almost all?) their stuff with the voluntary TV guidelines, which I believe they rated Battle of Gods TV-PG (which they may have provided to some theaters. BoG was actually distributed in multiple ways at the same time, so it's possible some were distributed as 'no rating' and others distributed it as a TV program and saw 'PG' and added the label to their tickets.)

Ironically the TV ratings are decided on by the companies involved themselves.

45,671 - Detective Conan: Sunflowers of Inferno (NEW)

"Usual Locations (43% of Market) - Saturday Admissions (As of 10AM)

19,317 - Dragon Ball Z: Revival of F (Toei) NEW
14,323 - Detective Conan: Sunflowers of Inferno (Toho) NEW

Note that pre-sales are included in the running total for the time they were purchased for. So if Conan had an advance ticket sold for 7PM, it wouldn't be included in the tally above yet, only once the showing has begun.

Next update in an hour."

So if it needs to be explained, DBZ sold 19,317 tickets as of 10am and that is across 43% of all theatres in Japan so maybe overall it could have sold around 45,000 tickets so far as of 10am.

Battle of Gods sold 561,000 tickets opening weekend so that's what it needs to soundly beat I guess.

If anyone wants to break up my string of posts it'd be appreciated  . Anyway so far it looks to be off to a good start and will more than likely make more opening day than Battle of Gods.

Well I'm getting them from the Japanese thread on a Box Office website, there's a guy who posts all detailed info on box office for the country, he's been doing it for years.

He did say the sites he uses for this info but I forget what they were called now.

It's definitely credible though.

"Both Dragon Ball Z: Revival of F and Detective Conan: Sunflowers of Inferno are on their way to exceeding 100,000 admissions at the usual locations for the day, which will best Doraemon: Nobita's Space Record of Space Heroes's 99,645 from last month, currently 2015's biggest opener.

In fact, both films are looking to comfortably exceed 100,000 here, perhaps aiming for 125,000+ for the day.

If they exceed 125,000 admissions at the usual locations today, their opening days could exceed 300,000 admissions and possibly break ¥400 million"
