Exactly how strong is Ox King/Gyu-Mao?

Discussion, generally of an in-universe nature, regarding any aspect of the franchise (including movies, spin-offs, etc.) such as: techniques, character relationships, internal back-history, its universe, and more.

Exactly how strong is Ox King/Gyu-Mao?

Post by Akyon » Wed May 13, 2015 6:09 am

We know he used to be a student of the turtle hermit alongside Grandpa Gohan, and he wasn't quite good enough to master the Kamehameha, but we also know he is ridiculously physically strong despite his lack of ki control...but exactly how strong would you rate him?

Somewhere between 50 and 100, power level-wise.

Almost as strong as (21st tournament) Kuririn, I believe. Though, I feel Kuririn would be able to beat him in a hard fight.

I guessing he's at around 50 in BP at the beginning of the series but 70-80 after training Chi-Chi for realz.

I reckon Chi-Chi surpassed him by a huge amount though as part of "the student surpasses the master" trend established by the 22nd/23rd Budokai.

Goku didn't die in GT. The show sucked him off so much, it was impossible to keep him in the world of the living, so he ascended beyond mortality.

It's been established in series that he is stronger than Raditz

Ox-King can't even form a Kamehameha so how does that work?

Natural extreme physical strength. Keep in mind, the Turtle School Style is primarily about making the body stronger. Gyumao probably just didn't bother learning.

That was never established.

Ox King's BP is no higher than 100 in my book.

Nothing of the sort is ever indicated at all. All indicators throughout the manga indicate him as being weaker than Roshi, who never came close to breaking the 1,000 mark battle power wise.

If you're confusing the two for some reason, Gyuu Mao/Ox King isn't the same being as Enma / King Yemma. Enma is strongly indicated to be more powerful than Raditz, but Gyuu Mao definitely isn't.

I'd be willing to argue that Roshi surpassed 1000 by RoF if he was training.

I'd think that he's about at Giran, Namu, and Bacterian's level. I couldn't imagine him being able to keep pace with Goku at any point during the series.

Giran and especially Namu are a lot stronger than that flea magnet. They're awesome and they would wreck BoDB Goku.

Yeah, I was really going more for range than an actual level, but the idea was generally that he easily could've gotten into the 21st Budokai, but Muten Roshi and Goku would destroy him. While, someone like Namu could put a good fight with him.

Man, even if Roshi trained, his power shouldn't be able to crack 300 unless he used a gravity chamber or the ROSAT. -.-

Namu wasn't that much weaker than Goku and Roshi. He did put up a good fight against Goku even with his tail.

Oh and Gyumao did train Chi-Chi whom I'm certain would wreck anyone from the 21st Budokai considering every finalist from the 23rd Budokai was worlds above the fighters from 6-7 years ago so he can't be too far off from that level…. but then again he's likely out of practice beyond that point.

Kamesennin's fears of his students getting complacent seems to be derived from personal experience. To me, this suggests that one or more of his past students stopped training once it was evident that they were among the strongest in the world (meaning if anybody was stronger, it would be only a fellow student or Kamesennin himself). Since Gohan and Gyumao are the only former students and since Gohan kept training even after death, this tells me Gyumao stopped once his training was complete. For me, that means he's somewhere between 21st and 22nd Budokai Krillin.

Hey guys, I actually have an exact answer for you on this one. Bear in mind that I am not a battle powers debater type of fan, as anything after the Freeza arc is undeterminable, and there are no references, manga, guidebook, shonen or V jump or otherwise to go off of by that point in the series. That being said, many years ago, at the height of my fandom, I tracked down every Jump and guidebook scan I could find that showed official powers for various characters between the first chapter of Dragonball and the end of the Freeza arc. Then I went through the manga page by page, volume by volume and took statements and various instances of percentages of growth and used a calculator to determine some of the in between powers where there was one shown officially for one saga and a later one for the same character. Anyway, I have a Word Document that I still use as a reference to this day when I am curious about something.

As far as Gyu-Mao is concerned, a battle power is given for him in one of the scans that I found. The picture is of him at the beginning of the series when Goku meets him at fire mountain. His battle power is 97.

I agree with the statement that he completed the Turtle School training and then stopped advancing. Which is likely why Roshi was so intent on beating his students in disguise at the Tournaments to ensure they would continue advancing and not become complacent thinking they were among the best in the world. I never made the connection that it was because of ol' Ox becoming complacent, but that makes perfect sense.
"Of" =/= "Have"

Contractions:
-Should have = Should've
-Could have = Could've
-Would have = Would've

The heck does "should of" even mean anyway? Think about what those two words mean individually, and then try to read them back to back in a sentence and make sense of it. Are you forming a prepositional phrase, is "should" a part of a larger grouping, or are you just typing random words based on how you think you hear them used verbally? Perhaps take a moment to contemplate this, and see if it becomes as mind jarring for you to look at as it does for me..
