Same here. My gateway to Japanese culture was Godzilla when my dad rented me Godzilla: King of the Monsters (1956) on VHS then I end up seeing more Japanese movies and shows as a younger kid growing up. Reruns of Speed Racer and G-Force on CN , My Neighbor Totoro and Saturday Anime on Sci-Fi (now Syfy) was my gateway to anime in the mid 90's long before Pokemon, Digimon and DBZ. I can't imagine my life without anime and tokusatsu. I would probably be a major NFL fan insteadtheoriginalbilis wrote:Can't say that's me.
I was already head over heels into the world of cartoons and anime (also cartoons!) well before I got into Dragon Ball.

Back in 2013 the only anime related products I was into were Pokemon (games) and Dragon Ball and funny story I was searching "Full power Freeza" in Google and Google came up with Fullmetal alchemist before I could type in "Freeza" so I clicked read the imdb page and decided to try the series out, been a fan of anime ever since although recently I haven't watched much apart from Assassination Classroom (and re-watching DBZ of course getting ready for Super!
) the rest of summer anime season hasn't been that appealing.

Notice what I've formatted in bold there; does it say all? Or even most? It's simply a lot. A lot of them are. I can't believe anyone would deny that. You may be one of them, Polyphase Avatron, but I am willing to suspect that you're not. Though I will say, if I have a new enemy based on the misinterpretation of a comment that I've made I can't honestly say that I'll be losing any sleep tonight.

Maybe it's the Doctor Who comment that got to him.

Haven't we already gotten these in GT? Goku dies, the DBs go away, and the Namekian DBs most likely won't be used again because of the Evil Dragons.

I always side eye the people who say "Now my kids/today's kids can experience what I did as a child!" Nigga, who gives a fuck about your childhood? You're an adult now and it was at least 15 years ago. Let the kids have their own experience instead of picking at a corpse.

So, do you just cringe when you see a Japanese cartoon, regardless of the substance it may contain?
"Dragon Ball once became a thing of the past to me, but after that, I got angry about the live action movie, re-wrote an entire movie script, and now I'm complaining about the quality of the new TV anime. It seems Dragon Ball has grown on me so much that I can't leave it alone." - Akira Toriyama on Dragon Ball Super

I have a feeling he might like Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt. It's more in line with American cartoons, and I showed it to my cousins who are into DB, but not much anime figuring since they liked American Pie, they'd like it. They did, though were still going "Wow!" a lot at many moments.
Re: Any other non-anime fans who are into Dragon Ball?
That's pretty much me. Dragon Ball is really the only anime that I like.
Although, I was told to check out Death Note a couple of years ago and I truly enjoyed that one as well. Death Note is definitely one of those animes that has you on the edge of your seat and hyped for the next episode. It's not your typical bubblegum anime of these days. If you've never seen Death Note, I definitely recommend you check that one out.
I also do enjoy anime games (Persona, Danganronpa, Zero Escape, Final Fantasy, Pokemon, etc.). The anime adaptations of those games are also pretty good...except for the Pokemon anime--pure trash.

Re: Any other non-anime fans who are into Dragon Ball?
Saying some anime fans and some Doctor Who fans seemed redundant and unnecessary. Hopefully by not generalizing anime fans, it would be assumed that I wasn't doing the same with DW fans, but I guess people will pick everything apart for the sake of sensationalism these days.DBZAOTA482 wrote:Maybe it's the Doctor Who comment that got to him.

If someone asks if I'm a general anime fan I say "hell no". But that doesn't mean I can't appreciate series that happen to fall under the category of anime.
Cool dudes do cool stuff like 5 Chipotle burritos
