"Dragon Ball Super" Series Official Announcement & Discussion Thread
Re: Official Announcement Thread & Discussion
I'm really surprised they picked in between BOG and F, it really was the longest shot for being chosen imo.
But I'm happy! I might yet get more ssjg Gokû, even if it's as he learns how to utilize it for blueper later on.
And Kuririn with hair again! I missed that, dig his BOG cut.

This is gonna be awesome, but now it's like I need my daily fix of new Dragon Ball Super elements.
And THAT is not going to happen.
What we got is already so exciting.

Despite his flaws, I'm quite the fan of Toyotaro, but this new image isn't particularly great. I think he lacks the same understanding of anatomy that Toriyama possesses. You can see this in the link between the bicep and the forearm; it looks proportionally too thin, making the arm look a little deformed on the whole. Muscles might be smaller with Toriyama's current work, but they're still drawn accurately, for the most part.
For some reason, this promo piece seems to lack any real intensity. There's a real lack of dynamism in the pose. I'm not really sure what it is, specifically. Goku's left hand is held up in quite a half-assed manner compared to his right. His face screams intense, but his body looks lifeless. It's a bit of an odd choice to tease Super's manga with. I would have thought they'd want to go with something a little more striking.
To be entirely unfair to the poor guy, I have to point out that it's quite a far cry from some of Toriyama's work that you can find in the various Daizenshuu:
It's odd. I do think Toyotaro can draw some very intense images, but he seems to work best when he's drawing his own work. In the Revival of F manga adaptation, he managed to make some intense scenes feel quite lifeless:
He seems to rely on 'intensity lines' without really taking into account the scene as a whole. Throughout this adaptation, he'd often use excessive after-images to convey speed. It's quite a contrast from Toriyama, who relies on powerful compositions on top of the aforementioned techniques.
Toyotaro is perfectly capable of some fantastically dynamic work, though. You can see it in his Heroes' manga clear as day:
Powerful pose, strong composition, and some subtle shading to top it off. I really like it. Perhaps he works best when he's doing original pieces? It leaves me a little concerned for this adaptation of Super. Hopefully he doesn't feel too uninspired while drawing.
Obviously, none of this really matters. I'm nitpicking and playing art critic because there's literally nothing else to talk about. The manga is simply supplementary material to promote the show. I don't blame him for the difference in quality, nor do I particularly care, really. We're all reading it for the story, anyway!
Regarding the video on the official website, I want to point out that you can see the length of the video on mobile. It's 15 seconds long, so it's highly likely that it's simply an official upload of the teaser shown at the end of Kai this week. I don't think it's anything to get too excited about.

One Piece: Episode of Sabo will air in August. Given that the special will be around 105 minutes long I suppose we can count out the use of quite a few animators.

And yet, he chose to do it after 3 years. It's not me that is saying this, Beerus said that himself.Doctor. wrote:He could do that at any time, though. Where is the placement of the series confirmed? This thread moves way too quick for me.Chuquita wrote:I'm really surprised they picked in between BOG and F, it really was the longest shot for being chosen imo.

Did Beerus really say "I'm sleeping for 3 years to eat Earth's food" or something of the sort? I don't recall that at all.DBZGTKOSDH wrote:And yet, he chose to do it after 3 years. It's not me that is saying this, Beerus said that himself.

Does anyone think that the manga could start in a different place then the anime?

Given that it's 232 pages long, this has probably been discussed several times already, though I have no reasonable way of verifying that, but is anyone else kind of pissed off that Goten and Trunks still look 7/8 despite being, what? 13 and 14? I mean, seriously? Just look at this promo image:

It's a shame the way the website was set up wasn't in such a way where we are basically able to copy and paste each character off the banner individually, like with FnF
Perhaps that was a mistake.

Man, I've never seen anyone's DBZ art compare to Prime Toriyama's work. In general, he made original designs that would sound absolutely ridiculous on paper, but they always came out incredibly cool. <3AjayLikesGaming wrote:

Yes. Whis asks him why would he sleep for such a short time, and he says that there are many different tastes on Earth that he hasn't tasted yet. I don't recall if it's in the theatrical cut, but it's definitely in the Special Edition, since I just checked it.Doctor. wrote:Did Beerus really say "I'm sleeping for 3 years to eat Earth's food" or something of the sort? I understand where you're coming from, and I'll admit that updated, older-looking designs would have been nice for both this and Battle of Gods. However, playing devil's advocate for a moment, I feel I should also point out that Goku himself looked ridiculously young for his age at a similar age, so it's not at all outside the realms of possiblity for the Dragon Ball universe!Blackstripe wrote:Given that it's 232 pages long, this has probably been discussed several times already, though I have no reasonable way of verifying that, but is anyone else kind of pissed off that Goten and Trunks still look 7/8 despite being, what? 13 and 14? Having said that, hopefully they'll start to develop their designs to show their growth as the series progresses - after all, one of the blessings about the two of them getting shafted in Resurrection 'F' is that they can have them grow and develop at whatever pace they want during the series. If they wanted them to have a growth spurt and look much more teenage within less than a year, they could do it and not contradict Resurrection 'F' whatsoever.
Re: Official Announcement Thread & Discussion
If these new characters are really from a new universe, and this new universe happens to have a radically different cast, does this mean we can see a female Goku? How about a strong Mr. Satan? My, the possibilities are endless, the overused clichés that will ensue will be gigantic, the enormous rage coming from the fanbase will be breathtakingly hilarious.

Guess I'll have to alter varying parts of the poster to make the DragonBall fanbase happy, even if we end up with a lot of conflicting paradoxes.

Re: Official Announcement Thread & Discussion
Okay, why is everyone acting like this is confirmed to take place in between BoG and RoF? Was anything like that even confirmed? All I've read thus far is a few people speculated it might, then some cursed about it being confirmed to take place then, and after that everyone seemed to go along with it.
Beerus is asleep between the two movies, so why would he be in the trailer and images if he was asleep? Why would they even set a whole series between the movie after just building it up? At most, I imagine we'll have an arc before that point (maybe less). I say imagine because nothing has been confirmed as far as I've seen (unless I missed something, if so, feel free to post).

So is anyone really pleased with the animation quality? It looks just like Battle of Gods!

As soon as I noticed this would take place between BoG and F, I thought you'd be happy, as SSG will surely returnChuquita wrote:I'm really surprised they picked in between BOG and F, it really was the longest shot for being chosen imo.
