The traslation was bad in the Buu Saga which was based on the French dub. Everything else had a decent traslation in my opinion (DragonBall from Japan, DragonBall Z Cell Saga from Latin America, DragonBall GT from Italy).SaintEvolution wrote:Well...the translation was a very bad problem too. Just see it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SAp1hpbje78
The way Cell says Kamehameha(kamehame...hame) and the way Gohan says(kamehameeeeeeeee) are bad. In other moment, when Goku uses the instant transmission Kamehameha with Cell, Themis Psihogios says "kameKameha". Those are some very bad errors.
In the Buu saga, that became worse, because, cause the french dub has a bad translation by itself. And in GT....well, the italian dub doesn't have proper errors, but has some strange and lazy dialogues that themselves created, that doesn't exist in the original. A dub that uses that for translate...well, I can't think the final result was good.
Re: The Best Dragon Ball dub?
First of all, the way this video is edited is horrible.
And I don't consider that as a major bad translation since in the Greek dub ''Kamehameha'' was pronounced many times as ''Kamehame Kema'' (which means Kamehame Wave). You can also find the characters referring to this attack as Kema Kamehame (Wave Kamehame) when they talk as it if ''Kamehame'' and ''Wave'' were two words and not just one.
Also, the main problem with the Italian dub is the annoying narrator and that ''Onda Energetica'' for Kamehameha.

It was edited, but it's possible hear with the correct timing. Cell's speech had not cut. Only the part with Goku talking at first was edited.TheRed259 wrote:First of all, the way this video is edited is horrible.

But about the rest, I don't disagree.
Also, in the filipino dub, they call Kamehameha as "Kamehame Wave".

I'd like to point out that voice actors are not the ones to blame for mistakes in the script or inconsistent translations. It's the translator, the adapter or the director, depending on the case, who are.SaintEvolution wrote:Themis Psihogios says "kameKameha". Those are some very bad errors.
I'm just saying this because I've seen stuff like "the voice actor made a mistake" or "the voice actors sometime said incorrect sentences", as if they were responsible for keeping consistency in the dub, when it's probable that they know less about the series than the average mainstream fan, or even barely know about the series at all.

I'd like to add that we shouldn't blame translators who worked with already adapted versions for repeating mistakes like calling Sayians "Space Warriors". Funi worked with Japanese one and inconsistencies were results of translators decisions, but folks who worked with French/Funi scripts had no other options than do their best with given material.

I didn't said that translation errors could be fault of the voice actors. The VA's really are not the guiltys about this. Translation errors are all fault of the translators and directors.

Re: The Best Dragon Ball dub?
I'm not saying you did: I was just pointing it out because I've noticed a trend of people talking about the actors when they're actually taking about badly-translated lines, such as saying "this voice actor said this line incorrectly" instead of "this line was incorrectly translated". This can lead people who don't know much about voice acting to think that it's their responsibility to check the script and things like that.SaintEvolution wrote:I didn't said that translation errors could be fault of the voice actors. Even TV Tropes reflects this trend, although regarding lip-sync:
Contrary to popular belief, the people who need to deal with Lip Lock are not the voice actors (who only act out what is written in the script) but the people who translate/write the dub script...

You're right. Many translators worked with the Funi/French scripts, and we know quite a bit about how the series was translated into English, but I'd like to read some stuff about the French translation. Since they didn't use any other dub as a basis, how could the script be so horrible?Eire wrote:I'd like to add that we shouldn't blame translators who worked with already adapted versions for repeating mistakes like calling Sayians "Space Warriors". I've wanted to know about it for some time, but I haven't found much information about it. Do you have any?

Also, about the worse dubs, I think the malaysian dub draws with the old serbian one in badness. Just compare:

Re: The Best Dragon Ball dub?
Mr. Themis Psihogios has also said that If you don't understand sth, then how are you gonna perform it? He has also mentioned that they received a bad version of French DragonBall Z in which the animated image and the French voices didn't match. They were recording the episode without hearing the French voices. I don't know if this is bad or not but it's sth.
Good thing Greek is a rich language and you can say sth with many different words. But still, some horrible lines like ''Do you feel the vibrations?'' still remain. Yes, this is word that the French dub used for Japanese Ki.
I was watching some French GT the other day. It was the scene with Vegeta's flashback from Episode 55. Here is the translation of Vegeta's last words to Goku before he dies on Namek: I can fight him, I haven't said my last word, a Saiyan warrior fights to the end. I can do it, I want to help you fight that Freezer. I am capable of doing this, have faith in me, help me to stand up.

Re: The Best Dragon Ball dub?
I have an interesting question. For those of you who were fans back in the day, mid to late 90s, who were the ones who released the two Cooler movie dubs that were almost the only ones available for the longest time?
To me, these were the worst dubs ever. They pronounced Gohan as Go-han ('a' as in at, rather than 'ah' as in father), and Piccolo sounded like he was a real alien for sure, very raspy voice.
Sorry if any of you like the dub that I am referring to, but dang... Lol.

I think you are refering to the filipino english dubs. Also, the cast of those dubs is the same of the tagalog one. Piccolo's filipino actor sounded much better in the tagalog version than in the english one, I think.GreatSaiyaman3Gou wrote:I have an interesting question. And, the dubs you are talking about are actually not the worse. The quality that they were ripped is very old(and because that, bad for the new days), but it's a much better dub than for example, the malaysian english one(SAIYA PEEPLE).

Hahaha, Saiya-Peeple would be amazing to hear, but bad for the soul. Regardless, I totally disliked those.
But in my opinion, the best dub to me would probably be Funimation, as I grew up with it. But the other day on Youtube, I came across a Dragon Ball Curse of the Blood Rubies dub by Harmony Gold, Inc. It turns out that this is very old and I used to rent from a local video store when I was younger, but in terms of quality, it was pretty great.
A lot of people may not like it because in it they change Goku's name to Zero, Yamcha to Sadeki (I think, may have spelled it wrong), Puar to Squeakers, and Oolong to Mao-Mao. That aside, the quality of the voices and the work these actors put in to be characters were commendable. That would have to be my favorite.

Well, I don't really remember, but I believe 2-3. The probable Filipino one, the Dragon Ball one, Ocean Studios (I remember Goku's voice changing from the movies to the series, I remember early series Goku sounded different than later series thanks to Schemmel being hired, but I'm not sure if that early series voice was different than the Dead Zone and Tree of Might dubs.
I may be mistaken with saying Tree of might was dubbed, but worlds strongest and dead zone definitely were at that point..

Re: The Best Dragon Ball dub?
The new movie Revival of F had been released in the brazilian theaters those days, and for some videos I had saw, it's awesome! I can't wait to see the full movie with that dub. Well, just saying that the brazilian portuguese dub of Revival of F is probably amazing. I will try to catch some videos os the mexican one too...
...actually, probably the portuguese dubbed videos of the new movie that I'd saw were removed already for the copyright stuff
But anyway, it was good to see them. I can't wait to watch the full movie.
Also, I'm exciting for other dubs that the movie can have in the future.
