Man, you can't just compare 90's with 2010's

I mean, of course we would expect more from animation, it's been 18 years for godness sake
Of course I can. Animation has merely changed to a digital format, but it's still fundamentally done in the same fashion. Sure, it's going to look a bit better but my comparison is valid. The characters look super off model between those awful DBZ episodes. A huge difference in quality drawing from one episode to the next. It doesn't matter if you're drawing it digitally or not.

The type of animation they do here doesn't utilize many things to make it vastly advanced compared to the 90s. But the general quality of the drawings themselves seems to have been better in the 90s.

Unsure if this has been talked to death or not: With Super being set a year or so after Buu, how exactly will Beerus and Whis fit into the story? Will their part of the story be completely detached from everyone else?

I agree with this. I mean, something like the early Sailor Moon Crystal episodes is just bad because it's bad, and something like Cowboy Bebop, which is well over a decade old now, is good just because it was done with real skill and effort; i.e. it's good.

EDIT: And yes, I'm aware there are reasons, in that one was a rushed-out web-series and the other was not, but you know what I mean. My point is that you can indeed, as the above quote says, compare works from different time periods.

The 2008 special looked fine. Episode of Bardock, Plan to Eradicate The Super Saiyans, Battle of Gods and Revival of F are overly shiny. Gohan gets the hell beaten out of him by Hatchiyack and yet he only gets few scratches here and there and still looks like a plastic figure. Why can't we have some blood now?

About the Lion King comparison, it reminds me of this thing I found somewhere few months ago.

Shonen movies these days typically avoid to show much blood, people who pay attention might notice other franchises do the same, even when the corresponding tv series doesn't.
BoG and RoF do have subtle moments where they show it, though, and Episode of Bardock didn't avoid blood. Let's see how a tv show handles violence, but the standards aren't the same from 20 years ago, that should be a given.

Speaking of being on-model and having good proportions... how come they don't just use CGI always-on-model templates to draw over at all times?
I mean, that's the perk of a 3D model: it keeps the right proportions and the right on-model look at all times no matter where you place them and how you change their positions.

So, wouldn't there be a way to just make definitive 3D "template" models of characters with the perfect look and proportions, being placed on every single frame featuring the character and then trace on that 3D model frame to make it a 2D drawing in the end?
Wouldn't that make complaints about being off-model simply impossible, resulting in a show where the character cannot be off-model even in a million shots? (unless the default model itself is off-model to start with)

There are so many ways of drawing something... not always the "correct" way is the best and cooler... it's the artistic way of drawing something.

I would like them to make a CGI series just to keep the models consistent. It bothers me when combine the both of them. Something like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p84nBxAwQOs
Check out Journey's End, a short story of Goku and Vegeta's final days. "Time is running out for the last two Saiyans"

It looks pretty bad and too cartoonish.

I was hoping for more raging blast 2 CGI look or similar to final fantasy.

It looks alright for a video game, I suppose.
I'm not really a fan of the style though, and definitely wouldn't want a series of it.

I've never thought that Dragon Ball translated well to 3d/CGI animation.

Not only that, but I just don't like CGI animation, for the most part. It just feels lifeless to me. I've always much preferred hand drawn animation, especially when you have an artist capable of really dynamic drawings.

The idea isn't to draw on model, it is to draw something that is interesting. It's why animators like Tate Naoki or Shida Naotoshi are asked to animate cuts despite most certainly not drawing on model at all.

CGI looks gross on a low budget. I can't trust Toei to do anything with that.

CG looks gross in general. An extra month or two simply using one or two talented animators would go a long way towards increasing the quality of an episode.

Did anyone else notice that Toei changed the "100 episodes" to "xx" instead?

Nice catch.

Guess that proves what we theorised all along: it was just a placeholder!

Like most of these types of show, popularity and merchandise sales will dictate its length.
