He went in the RoSaT for a whole year after seeing Goku and Gohan master it and having Vegeta explain it to him...

And yet he still uses Grade 2 in the Cell Games.

No he doesn't...?
Besides, Grade 2 and FPSS have the same aura as I already mentioned, so even if he was Grade 2, it doesn't discredit that aura almost always being used for Grade 2 or FPSS.

This is Trunks as a Super Saiyan.
This is him in Grade 2.
And this is him in the Cell Games.
That's not the point. The point is that if he was G2 in the Cell Games, then he obviously couldn't control SS like Goku. And if he didn't have MSS at the Cell Games, then he didn't have it when he came back.

And the normal SS aura has been used on MSSs before, you know? Goku shows his normal SS aura (like the one he had vs Freeza) against Cell even after powering-up.

Anyway, I think they're MSSs too.

The images you posted of CG Trunks doesn't work, and he looks skinny in the cover page I posted.

Besides the Big Bang Attack picture, when has the spiky FPSS aura been used for regular Super Saiyans...?

Trunks had a ponytail when he was like this so this may not reflect what he should actually look like as a SSJ.

I fixed it now. Looking better at it, his aura is the normal SS one, so he's probably in SS. Nevertheless, he's in SS, not MSS. So he returned to the future as a SS.

I don't recall it ever being used for regular Super Saiyans besides Future Trunks, but that's what we're debating now.

How do you know Trunks isn't a FPSS? The aura I'm talking about is the extra spiky one from powering up. Not the one that stays around after transforming.

EDIT: Happy Birthday, by the way. (Assuming it hasn't already passed for you.)

I guess it's possible he is a MSS, then. I think the huge gap between him (and Vegeta) and Goku & Gohan kinda makes that a bit hard to swallow, though

And it already passed but thanks anyway! (How did you know? :P )

This is why it's bad to just rely on the powering up. Because it is inconsistent and varies throughout the story. If you look at the first transformations for both Goten and Trunks you could argue that only Goten was a FPSSJ. But then if you check their facial expressions during these scenes it is clear they must be FPSSJ's.
