Was Chi-Chi really a worthless character in the end?

Discussion, generally of an in-universe nature, regarding any aspect of the franchise (including movies, spin-offs, etc.) such as: techniques, character relationships, internal back-history, its universe, and more.

I don't get why everyone says Videl is "Chichi done right", either. She was an annoying tsundere who acted mean towards Gohan for no reason other than being a tsundere. She loved fighting and trained hard but once she settled down with Gohan she left it all behind and became your typical kawaii anime girl...I wouldn't be surprised if she even forgot how to fly. Now she's apparently nothing more than a meek housewife... AT AGE 16.

Chichi at least remained independent, kept her personality and even trained Goten, which suggests she still likes fighting.
Videl's aspirasions as a fighter was actually implied to be cuz of her father. Maybe after realizing his greatest accomplishment was actually a lie and meeting fighters that are dimensions beyond her, she left things up to the professionals.

That's a moot point. The question of the topic at hand is the influence she has on them and the story itself.

Wait, do Goten fans even rag on her?

Goku didn't die in GT. The show sucked him off so much, it was impossible to keep him in the world of the living, so he ascended beyond mortality.

That's also the case if we talk about Bardock's father, but his importance for the story and characters is non-existent and so he's never mentioned.

I don't understand, either. Even back in DB, Chichi had a defined similar personality: she was very naive and pure-hearted, but she wanted to find a nice boy to marry, at the same time she liked fighting and was impulsively violent. She actually has a consistent character-- even if the fighting went on the wayside onscreen, she never lost her independence.

Before deeming a character worthless, evaluating all angles of their contribution to a particular cause and to the series as a whole should be taken into consideration. As mentioned before, characters should be analyzed for how well they play the role they're meant to play, and how relevant they are to the main cast and/or plot. Even if Chi Chi were to never have existed, Goku needs a wife, and his sons need a mother. I'm not quite sure what the fandom is specifically looking for in that role, but would people prefer Goku to have some crazy sparring partner who keeps both him and his kids on their toes? Or worse, another carbon copy of Bulma? While Bulma is an extraordinary character in all regards, her unique attributes should belong to her exclusively. If the wife of Goku was simply another version of her, the redundancy alone would be unsightly. Chi Chi is Chi Chi, and she has a genuine persona that compliments the role she was assigned to play. I'd say the only area of improvement would be for her to tone down her emotional outbursts, and perhaps express more moral support to her husband.

Even with a flavorless persona, a dull-witted oaf like Broly attracts the love of countless individuals merely through his display of brute strength. Therefore, I'm not quite sure how a canon character who is very closely tied to the main cast catches the amount of hate she does. Perhaps Chi Chi's fan base would instantly multiply is if she was suddenly gifted with some ridiculous power hax.

Wouldn't surprise me, considering how all of her other appreciable qualities are overlooked.

Can't be helped considering the story never really seems to empathize she's important to them. I mean, any ordinary woman woulda divorced Goku's ass a long time but she stays... she's one ride-or-die chick... but the story tells us it's unremarkable.

If maybe a episode of Super has an episode called "Dear mama!! Something something..." where Gohan and Goten go over what Chi-Chi did for them... I'd probably forget all about how she was treated in the first episode.

Were it not for Chi-Chi we wouldn't have had Gohan and Cell would have destroyed Earth. The end.

but if goku had a child with bulma or anyone else, the child would probably be the same in strengh, besides it would be stronger because the alternative mum wouldnt make the child study all the time

While I get that Goku is now sitting in an insurmountable realm of power, I can't wrap my head around the fact that everyone else has to practically sit out.

As for non-fighters like Chi Chi, a deeper emphasis on her importance to Goku could always help accentuate the important relationships in the Saiyan's life. Elaborating on his connection with his loved ones would only improve his portrayal and add more depth into his character. In a sense it would be a mutual benefit for both Chi Chi and Goku, and possibly even for their kids.

As for some of the other fighters, there are numerous ways to utilize them without actually tossing them into the front lines of a major battle. If orchestrated properly, fighters like Piccolo, Krillin, and Gohan could all benefit from having the pleasure of maintaining their credibility through notable side battles. At this point, because many fans have already accepted that their favorite Namekian warrior, or their beloved hero from the Cell Games likely aren't going to be the stars of the show, even a moment or two to actually shine in a series of well choreographed battles would suffice.

I feel incorporating these side characters more efficiently adds more flavor overall by bringing in a unique array of personas generated from a multitude of characters.

Yeah, but that'd involve effort and I don't think he really wants anything to do with her anymore. I wouldn't even be shocked if he forgotten how powerful he made her at the 23rd Budokai.

In the upcoming episode she's probably just gonna be on Goten's ass about behaving and drooling over Dr. Briefs' wealth.

In side-note, strange how he would redesign the side characters when he has no intention of using any of them outside Bulma, Mr. Satan, and Videl.

Let's be honest, Toriyama only brought Chi Chi back to be Goku's baby mama. She, like all of the non-fighters (and most of the human ones) got the shaft in terms of character development.

This must be another case in the fandom of , the character is not represent (or stops being presented as such) like a badass to be respected (specially in a fighter way) = worthless.
Dragon Ball was always a kid series and fans should stop being in denial.

Chi-Chi is one of my favorite characters. Her contributions to the story were subtle, but vital. If Gohan was a true warrior who aspired to gain power and continued training just like everybody wants, he would just be a Goku clone. There would be literally nothing separating the two, they already have identical moralities and attitudes, giving them identical personalities as well would have just solidified Gohan as pointless.

As an example, Goku and Gohan have the same attitude. They are bright and cheerful and innocent and friendly and sweet. Meanwhile Goku and Vegeta have the same personality. They are warriors who love to battle and want to grow stronger.

However since Gohan does not possess the same personality, and Vegeta does not possess the same attitude, the three of them manage to be completely unique characters despite sharing many common traits.

And in Gohan's case, this is all thanks to Chi-Chi's influence. Imagine if Gohan were raised solely by Goku, we can even throw Bulma in there as the mother as many have suggested and nothing changes. Goku has a much stronger personality than Bulma, so Gohan would end up picking up Goku's traits. The few personality traits that define Bulma so strongly, like her selfishness and spoiledness, are incompatible with Gohan's core nature that he was born with, so he would not pick them up anyway. At best Gohan would inherit Bulma's intelligence, so we would get a Goku who still talks like a hick and trains all day but can also build a spaceship or something for comic relief.

Chi-Chi was vital because her personality is just as strong as Goku's, meaning the traits that she pushed on Gohan of intellect, properness and manners, and a focus on family life impacted him. And I don't know about some people, but I LOVE the Gohan we have now. I just wish there was MORE of him. He is such a freaking dork, but with the pure heart of Goku. How is he not lovable? Why do some people want Gohan to be a fighting badass who loves to train? The last time he was like that, against Super Boo, he was completely generic. The nerd Gohan is someone unique, and it's all thanks to Chi-Chi. And since she instilled in him the value of family life, we get those badass scenes where Gohan powers up in a rage to protect his family. I REALLY want him to do something badass to protect Videl at least once in Super, kind of like how when Beerus was out of control and beating everyone up, Gohan just put on his serious face, handed Videl his glasses, and flew up there to handle things... The only difference is I don't want him to get his ass kicked next time.

Now Chi-Chi on her own, I find infinitely entertaining. On the surface she is a perfect housewife who loves to cook and clean and smile and take care of her boys. If it ended there she would be generic, but then since she has to deal with freakin Goku all day, we find out that underneath the proper housewife she's actually completely crazy! Rather than call her "bitchy" like some people, I would call her fiery. She has a will that can go toe-to-toe with her husband's, and that's saying a lot. I just find her scenes to be hilarious, like the filler where she demands Dr. Briefs make another spaceship, and she suits up all badass and takes Master Roshi and Oolong with her and plans to go to Namek to save Gohan. She's just a housewife, so when you give her a will that strong, she becomes a badass. But it's simultaneously hilarious because she really expects to stand up to Freeza and everyone else.

And most importantly of all, Chi-Chi is by far the hottest character in the show. And I don't mean young Chi-Chi like most would assume, I'm talking about Boo arc Chi-Chi where she had that milf thing going on, MMF... Uh, but I suppose that's a little off topic. Anyway I adore Chi-Chi, her personality isn't annoying to me, it's entertaining and badass. You want a strong, independent female character, look no further than the woman who's stubbornness and fearlessness can match Son Goku. In the words of Master Roshi, "he's not coming back because he's afraid of the one thing stronger than a Super Saiyan; his wife!"

I see Chi-chi as Marge Simpson: the only one sane among a troupe of madmen and subnormals.
