Toei doesn't do the series justice at all.
Their animation work for Dragon Ball has always been pretty inconsistent, but now it's like they're not even trying. From the horrendous CGI in BoG and RoF to the laughably bad animation in Super, it makes me feel like Toei doesn't even deserve to work on a series as acclaimed and influential as Dragon Ball.
How do you feel about Toei's handling of the series, and what studio would you like to see take a shot at animating Dragon Ball?

BoG and, to a lesser extent, RoF were not that badly animated.

There were maybe 30 seconds worth of CGI in two movies that were over 90 minutes long each. It's not a big deal.

Anyways, they're animation is horrible; fans have created better, more accurate portrayals in minutes. Everything else though, seems alright.

That doesn't excuse them from looking like they did.Bullza wrote:There were maybe 30 seconds worth of CGI in two movies that were over 90 minutes long each. It's not a big deal.

Re: Toei doesn't do the series justice at all.
That's just objectively wrong. There's a bunch of CGI in F specifically, and it ruins the entire fight because it's just so terrible.Bullza wrote:There were maybe 30 seconds worth of CGI in two movies that were over 90 minutes long each. It's not a big deal.
Re: Toei doesn't do the series justice at all.
I'll state what I've said quite a few times already. The art direction is anatomically incorrect; it's objectively bad. The animation is subpar overall. The quality of the writing is below average, and considering the average isn't that high to begin with, that's not a good thing. Toei isn't Studio Ghibli. Can you imagine if they did a Dragon Ball movie?

Yes it is objective that CGi is in "F" but it isn't objective that it is terrible. I have read reviews for "F" in which people have either said the CGi sucked or some have praised and for what it is worth I don't think the CGi looks bad at all.Doctor. wrote:That's just objectively wrong. There's hope for Toei. They edit their shows a lot when they put them on bluray:

Re: Toei doesn't do the series justice at all.
There's bits here and there that show up for up to a few seconds at a time and that's it. It doesn't even account for 10% of the animation for the fight scene. That's just objectively wrong. There's a bunch of CGI in F specifically, and it ruins the entire fight because it's just so terrible
It was also an improvement over the CGI in Battle of Gods of which accounted for a few seconds in a 10 minute+ fight.
Re: Toei doesn't do the series justice at all.
My god, Usagi looks bad, and that's saying something considering how awkward Takeuchi's style looks animated. Her face is skewered like she's an alien or something.SaiyaSith wrote:There's hope for Toei. They edit their shows a lot when they put them on bluray:

No, it makes a big part of the fight. Every time Freeza or Goku is flying there's CGI, a lot of kicks and punches thrown are CGI and there's an entire scene of Goku dodging Freeza's blasts that is CGI too. It's more than just a few seconds and it's incredibly jarring. Considering the fight scene has a lot of talk, the CGI is incredibly noticeable.Bullza wrote:There's bits here and there that show up for up to a few seconds at a time and that's it. EP 5 was really the first episode in Super that had bad animation in my opinion. So I wouldn't exactly start pressing any alarm bells yet. But I do agree that the CGI in BOG and ROF is not that good.
Spoiler:
Re: Toei doesn't do the series justice at all.
I admit, Sailor Moon on the left side makes me feel sick, and I think about how Kaiser has to redraw scenes for a parody of all things, because Toei chooses to cut corners. No, Toei doesn't do the series justice. Too bad they own the distribution rights.

Besides the horrible CGI in ROF, I'm really proud of the final product. Already thanked Toei countless times.
When they do a great work, I'm the first one to compliment them. When they screw up, I'm just another one bitchin about it.
BOG looked cool, but ROF is a upgrade.
About Super.
Episode 1-3 have great animation.
Episode 4 started to look weird (bold linearts). Still good looking overall.
Episode 5 was the worst. Not 100% of it but most of the fight. Definitely bad.
But even in the fight there was some great scenes. These punches for example, never felt so good <3 http://webm.host/0fd3f/

They ruin everything
Even something as simple as Kai 2.0 is completely butchered by them

TOEI were cool back in the days... but now they seem to be relying too much on the nostalgia train to rake in money rather than putting in quality material. They're making me hate Majin Boo (not that I ever liked him that much to begin with).
Also, the pacing in Super is inexcusable...

I always side eye the people who say "Now my kids/today's kids can experience what I did as a child!" Nigga, who gives a fuck about your childhood? You're an adult now and it was at least 15 years ago. Let the kids have their own experience instead of picking at a corpse.

Re: Toei doesn't do the series justice at all.
Quick question: When you guys watched Dragon Ball for the first time and were automatically in loved with it, did you care about the animation that much? I mean, really? Can't you just enjoy the ride and stop looking at it just to find flaws on whatever little thing? Kaio's voice is still off and the animation style seems to vary on each new episode but Hey, cut me some slack here, You want to talk about bad animation? This is probably not it.
The only thing that I regret is knowing what is going to happen next because of BOG and Fukkatsu, but eventually we are going to get something new, Champa is coming...eventually...right?
