Master Roshi, how powerful is he in the wake of Resurrection of F?
Apparently, according to Akira Toriyama, he could've always been that strong "if he felt like it"...which is kind of disturbing when you think about it. He could've probably just kicked Raditz' ass if he was in the mood back at Kame house. But nope. He was like, "I'm constipated and cramped, so I'mma just watch Goku get his ass kicked and his son kidnapped."
Not to mention how trivially he should've been able to take down King Piccolo back in Dragon Ball.
Maybe he meant he could've trained himself
up to that level if he'd felt like it, which is somewhat less disturbing a prospect than him basically just not giving a fuck from the King Piccolo - Saiyan arcs, to the point of letting himself die.

Freeza's solders could have been anywhere between a Saibaman and Nappa in terms of power, and Master Roshi was beating them.

It's the latter, because Bulma checked his power level. He was weaker than Krillin. And then Kami did not invite him to train on the lookout, and even back in Dragonball he always talked about the next generation filling in his footsteps, so he could retire.

1. You take statements way too literally.
2. Resurrection 'F' is not canon.

Until Super overwrites it, it pretty much is.
Besides, who's to say Super won't keep Roshi being strong?

To be fair they don't have to be above the Saibamen at all. Gohan And Kuririn using battle powers of 1,500 easily dispatched two of Freeza's fodder army. Most of them are probably below 1,000.

They could very well be weaker than Saibaimen. I mean, some of them are killed by a big fish!
Anyway, I've always liked to think of Kame-sennin's buff form as a "power-weighted" transformation similar to Super Saiyan Grade III. That is, it makes his power go through the roof but kills his speed, which explains why in the main series he only ever uses it to fire massive Kamehamehas against large stationary objects, rather than in hand-to-hand combat against Piccolo or anyone. In a pinch this can also rationalize why he can blow up the moon, something which seems beyond anyone else until Piccolo. So maybe in the years since the Saiyan arc, he's trained to improve that form's speed so that he can actually fight with it. Bingo! Now he's way stronger, and it more or less fits with Toriyama's "he could have been this strong all along" statement, since it's a form he's technically had all along but could never use properly before.
I mean, 139 is his BP in his scrawny form, so if nothing else it shouldn't be much of a stretch to say he's much more powerful once he bulks up.

The last time Muten Roshi had his power measured was during the Saiyan arc... which was roughly fifteen years before the events of Resurrection F. Isn't it possible he's been training offscreen and has steadily increased his power? His abnormally strong student Kuririn did spend a lot of that time living with him, after all, and he would make one hell of a sparring partner.
Granted, due to his age and never doing extra-special stuff like going to Kaio's or getting potential unlocks, Roshi's not going to reach the same level as the younger Earthlings, and his power might deteriorate pretty quickly if he slacks off. But I don't see any reason why a PL of a few thousand wouldn't be possible for him, especially when he buffs up to fight like in the movie. I could see him around 1,000-1,500 normally and maybe close to 5,000 in his "max power" state.

Goku didn't want Krillin and Roshi to fight Radditz to avoid them being killed again knowing that they can't be wished back. Roshi also up a fight in DBZ Movie 2, so maybe he does train time to time.

We thought him watching aerobics all day long was just for entertainment, but it was actually a legit form of training which is finally paying off

Didn't Toriyama make some comments about Roshi being a fucktillion times stronger than he let himself appear to be as early as the Saiyan Saga or was that just more mistranslations from people who aren't Herms?
When someone tells you, "Don't present your opinion as fact," what they're actually saying is, "Don't present your opinion with any conviction. Because I don't like your opinion, and I want to be able to dismiss it as easily as possible." Don't fall for it.

You guys have to remember that Freeza's remnants were described as being very weak.
I see nothing wrong in Buff Roshi [Who I personally give him his official 180 BP] beating these weak soldiers who probably are at most in the 100-120 BP range.

It's hard enough as it is to believe that the Z fighters had as much difficulty as they did against the horde, now you're saying that the solders powers are nowhere near a thousand?

Freeza hired strong mercenaries to fill the ranks. These mercenaries were described as troublesome.

What you people don't understand is that Roshi is also a prodigy, with only a few hours of training his power level skyrocketed! If Roshi were to train for a few months or so, he would become the ultimate in human evolution!! All the beautiful women would be blinded by his new gold form! Golden Roshi would be the strongest being in the universe but sadly he will never reach that power because he is too busy to train..

Toriyama's 'explanation' for Roshi's inextricably
massive boost was half-assed, and moreover ridiculous. IMO.
I don't mind Roshi getting some love after all these years--in fact, I
really enjoyed seeing him in action again. However, if you're going to try and justify his showings as more than just the fan-service they are, then at least try to give a better reason than just:
"He could have always been this powerful if he wanted to *clap on*." Meh...

Then it's a perfect fit for, y'know,
the entire franchise.

I do like Herms' theory about him mastering his bulked up form and that being where his massive strength boost comes from...though I do think his base, "scrawny" power must've also increased from 139 too.
edit: Also, this is, amusingly, my 139nth post!

My sentiments exactly.
Being the martial arts enthusiast that he is, Roshi presumably kept up with his training and rightfully earned himself a Nappa-crushing 5,000 - 6,000 in the process. The old master barely had enough screen time as it is, so something as irrelevant as him indulging in his lifelong passion doesn't really need to be shown onscreen.
