Do you watch non-canon episodes/movies of the series?

Post by precita » Wed Aug 19, 2015 3:52 am

I was just thinking the other day that I hadn't watched any of the 13 movies, GT, or a lot of the filler in DBZ since...I don't know maybe 10 years when I was a kid/teen? Then it just struck me, I hadn't watched any of it because its non-canon, and I don't want to watch it to color my opinions on the characters or the direction of the series.

For example Freeza comes back in Movie 12 and Gohan kills him in one punch. The impact of Frieza coming back for "real" in Revival of F is lost if you watch Movie 12 and already see Frieza come back there. Frieza's return in Revival of F is only supposed to be the second time he comes back after Cyborg Frieza, but if you count filler we see him when Pikkon defeats him a third time, then Movie 12, and then GT.

Then you have the inconsistencies such as Yamcha beating Olibu while dead, Yamcha/Tien/Chaotsu beating the Ginyu Force on King Kai's planet in the Namek saga, Krillin taking on Kid Buu, the whole Pikkon tournament, etc.

So I'm wondering, does anyone else purposely not watch non-canon filler, the movies, or GT?

I'll watch the 2 TV specials and 13 movies alongside Kai but I've stopped watching Z when Kai was released and haven't seen Gt in years.
July 9th 2018 will be remembered as the day Broly became canon.

I'm a completionist, I have to watch it all in order.

100% sure this post, like a fair portion of things Dragon Ball, is meant tongue-in-cheek, and yet:

Assuming we're going by the common conception of what constitutes "canon" for this series, I actually do do this, for the most part. Having experienced Toriyama's manga first (and being primarily a fan of that), I find most of the adapted material to be tediously protracted to the point of being completely unwatchable.

At any rate, to the OP - I'm not sure why you'd wanna scorn anything "non-canon" just for the sake of maintaining a sense of continuity; there's really some great stuff in there.

I don't re-watch it mainly because I think most of it is bad. I re-watch the movies I think are good like 12 and 13, as well as the two TV specials, as much as I re-watch anything else.

I don't watch any of it, at all. I skip fillers and don't care for the movies or GT. Actually, even the anime itself is a rare thing for me to watch, as I stick mostly with the manga since it's not only much more beautifully drawn, it also has an incredibly better pace to it (especially in the Z portion, where the anime keeps making stuff that should take a couple of seconds take tens of seconds or even minutes to happen).

If I'm going to pop something random in to watch, it's generally the "non-canonical", if you will, material. That might be crazy to think, but it's less of a time-sink to watch a random DBZ movie than it is a random episode, since watching one episode will invariably lead to me watching an entire disc worth of episodes.

Other than the new Freeza movie, the most recent thing I watched? Episode of Bardock.

I'm surprised many people skip all the filler. I really like a lot of the training filler in the Saiyan saga, the manga moves too fast and I prefer to see the characters training and Gohan going on his adventures. I also really like the Pikkon tournament and a lot of the Great Saiyaman episodes.

Also its actually hard to skip filler while watch DBZ, because they add a lot of filler scenes into canon episodes. Like for example an episode adapts a huge part of the manga but throws in a 5 minute filler scene of Ginyu taking over Bulma's body, or the Ginyu Force on King Kai's planet. You can't overlook filler when they insert it into the main episodes.

So far I'm trying to replace the original dub with Kai and other material that has been drawn and animated with better quality. It's a slow process, but I've managed this far:
- Battle of Gods;
- Episode of Bardock;
- Yo! Son Goku and his friends return;
- The plan to eradicate all Super Saiyans.

I won't purchase games to watch the anime scenes though, because I'll just end up craving for more.

I typically only watch the anime for anime-only stuff. If it's in the manga, I'll just read the manga.

Since I'm not one of the new age fans of the franchise who obsesses over the canon like the Croatian government over whatever BS policy its trying to shit out next, I'll watch anything from the franchise regardless if its by Toriyama-sama-dono-manga Jesus or Toei regardless of canon *vomits from hearing that f*cking word over and over in relation to DB*.
When someone tells you, "Don't present your opinion as fact," what they're actually saying is, "Don't present your opinion with any conviction. Because I don't like your opinion, and I want to be able to dismiss it as easily as possible." Don't fall for it.

That's why Dragon Ball Kai has its merits. :wink:

EDIT: Oh, yeah, and there are some movies that I watch, of course. Bardock Special and Future of Trunks are a must. I would add Battle of Gods and Resurrection F too, but since they're being retold in Super, I guess I won't watch them that many times anymore.

I'm not overly concerned with what is or is not canon. I just rewatch things in order. Having to worry about what episodes to skip and everything would have ruined the series for me if it was something to be concerned about when I started watching the show, I don't see it as something to worry about now. Even the concept of what counts as canon now would confuse me, for example is Dragon Ball Super canon or the two movies with scripts written by Akira Toriyama, or would it be the Dragon Ball Super manga adaptation?

I always watch everything all the way through, even TV shows with episodes that can be skipped and don't hurt the narrative of the season. In DBZ there are a lot of good things in the filler, and the manga goes too fast for my taste. I'd rather things breathe more than have it go too quickly.

The movies can be a lot more fun and concise than the actual show at times. So if I ever need a quick DragonBall fix, I do pop in one of the various movies or specials from time to time.
Nothing matters (in a cosmic sense.) Have a good time.

Depends on what my mood or mindset is at the time. In general I like to watch things in completion, as well as more or less watch them where they would seemingly take place, but again, it all depends. It hasn't been all that long since I re-watched all of Dragon Ball over a month or so while at work, and my original intention was to then move right into Z...but I still haven't gotten around to a re-watch of Z just yet. It's on the list of things I want to watch again, but with so many other shows that I haven't watched yet or things I've only watched once, it just felt kinda meh to get into something that long that I've seen a million times and just about know inside-and-out.

In general though, if I'm going to be watching the series, then I watch the whole thing. I don't, for example, pop in Z and make it a point to skip the Saiyan training stuff, or the Garlic Jr. arc, or anything like that. The only times I tend to skip stuff entirely when watching shows is if it's a 100% recap episode (like the 16th episode of Gurren Lagann). And seeing as how Dragon Ball doesn't really have anything that's a 100% recap of something we just saw not that long ago (seriously, a 26-ish episode series does not need a recap episode!), there's nothing that I ever really feel like making it a point to skip.
