Do you think Budokai 3 aged well?

Post by DBZAOTA482 » Thu Aug 20, 2015 9:34 pm

Yeah, it's that kind of topic.

Most people would agree that the first two games haven't exactly aged the best but what about the third one?

When it first came out it was met generally positive reviews (currently holding the highest critical rating on metacritic). It was a (surprisingly) huge improvement over the first two and it was officially the first game to transcend the "Strictly for Fans" Label... but of course, there are some mad haters (and a particular one comes to mind). Does it still hold up in your eyes?

Anyways this might be the huge Budokai fan in me speaking but it has aged well for me. Of course age has revealed a few flaws (Dragon Rush and Hyper Mode) especially when compared to Shin Budokai and Infinite World which does certain things A LOT better, but B3 is still a blast to play today like it was when I first got it. In fact, it might a little better than I remembered it being more appreciative and knowledgeable on fighting games in general.

Goku didn't die in GT. The show sucked him off so much, it was impossible to keep him in the world of the living, so he ascended beyond mortality.

I always side eye the people who say "Now my kids/today's kids can experience what I did as a child!" Nigga, who gives a fuck about your childhood? You're an adult now and it was at least 15 years ago. Let the kids have their own experience instead of picking at a corpse.

No, I don't think so. Especially when Shin Budokai is pretty much the formula perfected. Budokai 3 feels sluggish now whenever I go play it.

I didn't particularly enjoy it when it came out, so I'm gonna go with "no" as well. I can go back and play Tekken 3. I can't with any of the Budokais, really.

Yes and no. While still a great game. The game currently is under "Only for fans" if it gets a re release. While fans will love as the modern games suck or have no replay factor. More gaming fans will see it as a basic game.

I think its aged fine. It's fast paced, good to look at with awesome character facial expressions and epic cutscene ultimates, has a decent amount of tactical depth, an awesome combo system, a story mode that is still fun to play from time to time, a soundtrack that never gets old, a roster that's big but not overly big, and it covers parts of the story that have been left out in recent years (with the exception of Xenoverse). And it's still easy to pick up and play with a cool level up system that anyone can enjoy.

I'd say its aged better than most of the Spike games for sure.

Yes it did. With a great opening, menu interface and the atmosphere filling it is just as perfect as it can get.

I prefer Shin Budokai for the gameplay, and Burst Limit for depicting the anime so well. Budokai 3 sits somewhere in between for blending those two aspects rather well, with a great roster. However, I prefer the "extremes" when it comes to enjoying one aspect over the other.

Budokai 3 doesn't age, it's immortal.

It aged pretty well to me. I bought the Budokai HD collection, and the game as a whole still provided that awesome and engrossing experience it had when I played it the first time round all those years ago.
