Re: What phrases/opinions/things bring out your irate fanboy
I'm not sure if it's just me being used to the dub, but it feels more natural for me to say "Saiyan" with an "ay" sound rather than an "ai/eye" sound. However, maybe that's just due to me saying "Saiyan" and not "Saiya-jin". It feels completely natural to say "S-eye-a-jin" but not "S-eye-an", similarly it feels more natural to say "Saiyan" but not "Say-a-jin".
Either way, I can respect fans of the original work, but it's just what I'm used to. If it's really such a big point of contention that fans actually get irate about it, maybe they're taking a goofy manga/anime far too seriously.
That being said, one thing that always bugged me about the dub was Tien's name. Krillin's name never bothered me, even though they lost the chestnut shaolin pun, because Kuririn was probably more difficult to pronounce to western children with little Japanese exposure, but with Tien it's different. Tenshinhan isn't that difficult to say, and now the dubs are caught between some weird place in between the old dubs and the original JP version, calling him things like Tien Shinhan as if Shinhan is his last name. That being said, I'm pretty sure the Tien name was just to fit with the mouth-flaps, since Chaozu called him Ten-san, similarly to how Bulma's "Son-kun" became "Goku".
It doesn't make me irate, but given that they're trying harder to stick to the source material, it still feels weird that they'd do that.
EDIT: Wordfilters. Ridiculous. All they do is stifle conversation out of source material elitism. How can you discuss dub terms if they're immediately wordfiltered into the correct terms?

Yeah I know it's just Kai in Japan, but it makes more sense for it to be called Z Kai over here because, unlike Japan, the whole series isn't just called Dragon Ball. If they were starting with the original, then yeah. But for the west, Kai starting with Raditz makes more sense being called Z Kai

Even so, I still don't think it makes much sense to call it just DB Kai. Yeah, the manga is all DB, but not the anime, and the only portion of the series they reversioned was DBZ.
The biggest truths aren't original. The truth is ketchup. It's Jim Belushi. Its job isn't to blow our minds. It's to be within reach.

Though it does fit with Japanese naming conventions and at least gives the illusion of Kai being its own series.ABED wrote:Even so, I still don't think it makes much sense to call it just DB Kai. So we have:
Dragon Ball
Dragon Ball Z
Dragon Ball GT
Dragon Ball Kai
Dragon Ball Super
I think it all comes down to brand recognition. Z is somewhat important in the U.S. for the brand, whereas in Japan it doesn't appear to matter.

Yeah, that's what I was trying to get at, but worded it poorly.ABED wrote:Even so, I still don't think it makes much sense to call it just DB Kai. Yeah, the manga is all DB, but not the anime, and the only portion of the series they reversioned was DBZ.

When people call the entire series "dragon ball Z". When people say I'm wrong for saying "Tenshinhan" and "Mr. Satan" or that I'm spelling Freeza wrong and that Tie n Hercul e and Fr(i)za are right.

They could have easily called him Ten shinhan, I mean it would still be stupid but it would be closer too the correct spelling.DomoArigatoMrPopo wrote:I'm not sure if it's just me being used to the dub, but it feels more natural for me to say "Saiyan" with an "ay" sound rather than an "ai/eye" sound. Probably already been said. But people referring to Akira Toriyama by just "Akira" makes me want to stab raccoons.

"Dragon Ball deaths are not emotional because they always come back to life."
By that logic I shouldn't feel anything seeing these scenes:

A world without Dragon Ball is just boring.

Re: What phrases/opinions/things bring out your irate fanboy
The deaths are emotional as they're happening but bar Piccolo sacrificing himself due to the fact the Dragon Balls themselves are temporarily gone when he bites the dust, all the others don't really make much sense to get choked up over from an in-universe perspective. Especially from the characters who become so okay with hordes of people being murdered simply because they know the Dragon Balls can restore them anyway. I think Krillin even suggested to Bulma it would be okay for Goten and Trunks to die since they can just wish them back anyway.
When someone tells you, "Don't present your opinion as fact," what they're actually saying is, "Don't present your opinion with any conviction. Because I don't like your opinion, and I want to be able to dismiss it as easily as possible." Don't fall for it.

? Their is a difference between Nozawa voicing five characters who all are relate to a character she has been voicing for nearly 30 years and Sabat who for awhile it was easy to name the characters he didn't voice!Ree wrote:That doesn't sound right to me
"Its okay for Masako Nozawa to voice the Son family but when other dub actors like Terry Klassem voice multiple characters they're the devil!"

Do people really like this renaming though? I'm just thinking in everyday conversation having that alphabet soup in the title is cumbersome. And then hardcore fans just call it Kai the same way they call the new series Super.Baggie_Saiyan wrote:It wasn't just the USA. It got re-branded to Z Kai everywhere but Japan.

Wait, I just saw this response now.Dbzfan94 wrote:I find this mentality just pompous. I know it's correctly pronounced 'Sigh-yan' but I still say Say-in out of habit and preference. That's my bad. I pronounce it S-ai-yan too, my former post was replying to his comment about people referring to the whole series as Dragon Ball Z. I think specific pronunciations like that are understandable since many people have gone years and years without even knowing the words should be pronounced some other way. But calling the whole franchise Dragon Ball Z is just blatantly disregarding another entire anime series that we have complete access to and no excuse to ignore.

Well yeah I'm not denying that, calling the whole series DBZ is just stupid. That's not that common anymore though thankfullynickzambuto wrote: That's my bad.
