Because Movie 8 was framed for widescreen to begin with. Funny how the vast majority of their 'in-motion comparisons' came from there.

Bub, I was talking about the Saiyan saga footage, its funny how you will let yourself believe anything just so you can stay mad at Funi.

Well, to be fair, you started out your sentence talking about movie 8 and then ended it saying that cropping wasn't affecting the action that badly. So, it'd be easy to assume you were saying that the action doesn't look bad while cropped based on movie 8 footage.

Well, Wolverine, as Kendamu already said I thought you were referring to Movie 8's footage based on the structure of your sentence. My bad.

As for the Saiyajin arc (per FUNi's 'tech trailer')...

Yeah. Footage looks great. We lost nearly all of Gohan and gained Piccolo's left hand. WINNAR = YUO ;p

Maybe funi will crop it so much that we don't even see Gohan and new viewers will assume Piccolo is being blasted on his own. :x

Heh. I know, I know. I'm just being sarcastic. Guess I'm too passive and nice a guy to get worked up over something like aspect ratios. At least the footage looks cleaner and stuff, so like I said before, FUNimation's got my money on this one so far.

Hear hear!

Here's some food for speculation:

On my part, I can't wait to hear that new dub with the original score. I wonder, are they going to leave the OP/ED songs in Japanese (like in the DB movies), or are they going to dub the OP/ED into English (like the DB TV series?)

Most of their non-DB releases have the full Japanese credits as well as the translated full credits. I wonder if they'll do that (finally) or leave everything textless like they've done with the older DBZ releases.

Does anyone know what the packaging is for ther season sets? Since the set holds 6 discs, is the box going to be a digipack (think The Simpsons) style set, or a box with thinpak/thin cases (like most recent anime boxsets?)

I saw a prototype of the boxset at the San Diego Comic-Con last year. And it was a fold-out box, like the South Park Season Sets. They also said it was subject to change, so I'm hoping it'll be in Thin-pak cases.

All I wanted was a box with three standard DVD cases that held two discs each. I can take care of them more easily that way.

Oh well. If they have foldouts like the South Park set I won't mind.

I can see why people would buy this box-set regardless of the aspect ratio. The video quality, bonus fetures and low price are very tempting. However, that Gohan/Piccolo screen really shows how bad some of the scenes are going to look. If no good news turns up before late January I'll likely just cancel my pre-order.

I would really like to see some more video footage, so I can get an idea of how the widescreen is going to look. I was hoping that we would only lose a small amount (similar to Funi's recent comparison images), however it looks as though we're losing a fair amount.

I've cancelled my pre-order and I'm putting my money towards the second DB box set. I'll support Funimation by buying something which I consider to be a competent release.

I personally hope they dub the songs. The original versions would probably still be better, but I'm curious to see how English-dubbed versions of "Cha-La" and "ZENKAI Power" would turn out. Not to mention, having dubbed songs would provide a sense of consistancy with their Dragon Ball dub, since they dubbed the songs for that show as well.

I hope they do, but didn't Toei only give FUNi the original credits for GT? I think that the only openings or endings FUNi ever got for DBZ were textless-only, so they wouldn't be able to translate the credits like they do with their other shows. We might see credits in the dub opening, but I wouldn't count on it. As for the ending animation, I just hope that FUNi doesn't only credit seven people from the Japanese staff, like they did with their other DB releases.

I don't think digipak is very likely. With their most recent boxsets (the Lupin III movies, most notably), FUNimation just has regular armary cases that can hold two discs each. That's probably what will happen with these sets: three regular cases with two discs each in them.

Even the people bitching it about it the most might get it, and that reason is what you mentioned above. Twice!

Whoops, my bad.

I've just been watching the first episode of Dragon Ball on my widescreen T.V. It has a feature that lets you display the 4:3 image and pan it up or down and to shrink or expand it vertically. So I have the option of full screen with bars, stretched widescreen (which doesn't look too bad to be honest) and custom widescreen. Having the Vegeta Saga in widescreen would remove those options for me.

Whether I watch the Vegeta Saga box set or a 4:3 DBZ episode on a widescreen T.V., I'd be losing footage in either case. So why not release the box set in 4:3 so those who want fullscreen can have it, and those who want widescreen can have it as well?

I think I might have posted that same idea on FUNIs forums a while back, but no one took to it. There are other DVDs out there that have that option. I think at the time the Transformers Movie 20th Edition DVD had just come out. And that thing had two discs, one disc had a 16:9 version, and the other had the 4:3 version. The discs themselves are pennies to produce. What more could you ask for? That satisfies everyone and I can't that it would increase the price by more than 5-10 bucks. Would you pay an extra $5, or even $10 to have both versions in the same package? I would.

The only extra cost would be the remastering cost. However, someone did think one of the possible reasons for the widescreen is to not have to restore some pieces (i.e. - the glue at the top of the screen).

It's a real shame about the widescreen thing.

The Dragonball series is the ONLY series I can think of where Funimation has screwed up, redeemed, screwed up, redeemed, and so on and so forth.

I know a lot of people here don't think Funi did this to be evil bastards; we're thinking, "HOW COULD YOU DUMMIES POSSIBLY THINK THIS WAS A GOOD THING?!"

Regardless, this set is mine. I just really can't wait any longer for a more perfect set. I want to hear English with Japanese BGM. I want to hear Japanese with Daimao's subtitles.

This reminds me of when the original Star Wars trilogy first came out on DVD.

Wow....all I can say is......Damn! I've watched that tech trailer at least a dozen times. I'm heavily anticipating this release. The movies look gorgeous, as does the entire series. I have almost all the Dragonball Z DVDs but I was thinking of putting them on ebay since this stuff is about to come out. FUNi gets my respect. The widescreen thing is obviously a marketing tactic so I'm not bothered by it too much. The video quality, extras, price etc all make up for it.

Now here's my question: I want these sets early! Does anyone know of a website that usually gets things in a week or so before release date? I remember when I used to order from dbzstore.com like 5 years ago, I would get all the Freeza DVD's almost 2 weeks in advance. Is rightstuf known for shipping things before the release date? DVDempire? Suncoast? Anyone kno?
