Why is Broly so over-hyped?

Broly is the representation of what the US fanbase think Dragon Ball (Z) is: he is an over-muscular, spike haired, baritone voiced monster who steamrolls everyone is his path.

Broly is the archetypical, Japanese villain that is meant to be walking Style. It depends always on the situation if it works or feels to forced. And in case of Broly the way he should be stylish works perfect for the series.

Wasn't Broly really popular in Japan too? They did make 2.5 movies of him and Heroes (which is Japan only I think) has new forms for him.

He is popular in Japan but not to the degree he is in the west. Broly's popularity in Japan is also helped by the fact his creator adores the character and still talks like Broly is tops but he fully understands the big brute has been surpassed ages ago and is just taking pride in his work.
Going on hiatus. Too much stuff in RL to deal with for me to keep up with posts here for now. Was fun, hope you all have a nice day and future! Volt signing off.

I'm not sure -- and I agree it doesn't make a lick of sense -- but my first intuition is that it's got something to do with Goten's crying setting Broly off at the beginning of the sequel (which is still no ground for it but, eh, whatever).

So, like Freeza, but mentally challenged and without the same charisma?
Frieza likes to rule. Broly likes to destroy and torture. He's far more chaotic evil. By far, Broly is the most intimidating and dark villain in the series. Frieza (pre-F) would piss his pants worse than Vegeta if he ever ran into him. Hell, Broly literally is Frieza's biggest fear.

I'm pretty sure Goku's cries were the catalyst to his mental instability. Obviously, his powers are the major culprit, but that put him over the edge. Otherwise, he wouldn't be so obsessive with him.

Worse than Beerus? I can't say I agree.

Beerus is better than Broly. He doesn't immediately destroy pretty much everything in sight for no reason, like Broly. He destroys some things in sight for petty reasons. Also, Beerus sleeps for many years and is only awake for a much shorter period of time, comparatively. If Broly has his way, he wouldn't stop until everything was finished.

He's also scarier because he's consciously completely immoral. He'll snuff out entire civilizations on a whim and probably get a good laugh from the fireworks show based on, as you said, any petty thing. Now I can see why people would look at Broly and say he's worse, but personally, a man child with no concept of right and wrong with all the power in the universe is wwwaayyy scarier to me.

Sure, you can consider him scarier or even more evil. But that doesn't mean that Broly isn't worse for the universe as a destructive force. Heck, a cop can be more scared of a clown than any thug but it's clear which one is better for his city.

How in God's name is Beerus intimidating or dark? He's an Easter bunny-looking, pudding-craving, kawaii face-making cat...

Sure, he's a jerk and around Frieza's level of evil, but he does not exactly invoke fear either (I'm not talking in-universe, mind you).

If we go by that logic, then no character in Dragon Ball does. They're drawings filled with bright and pretty colors.

You know what I mean...

Even the creator of Broly himself said it, and I agree.

If Broly would stand in front of me I would be scared to death. And amazed. Because he is cool (imo).

Battle of Gods' Beerus is nowhere on the level of Freeza or Broly. He's perfectly swell until something upsets him, and if you can occupy him until he calms down he'll even apologize for overreacting. You can't do that with either Freeza or Broly.

Super's version of Beerus seems more outright sinister, but we'll see how he turns out at the end of his arc.

Broly is worse than Freeza, though, because he just blows up everything with no desire to rule. He'll kill you, no matter how useful you might be to him. Freeza might keep you around as one of his slave-soldiers, if you amuse him.

I find Broly to be the most terrifying villain. His LSSJ form that is. Just everything about it is so fear inducing for me. His unnaturally bulked up body, his iris-less eyes, his aggressively unstoppable demeanor. Just his sheer size.

He's like a bulldozer. You can't run away and even if you try, he'll just surprise-attack you by jumping through and out of a building at you.

Others are scary too but because they'll torture and kill you too, but just design and demeanor wise, Broly gives me nightmares.

I have to agree with this, actually.

Brolli -- and I attribute some of his staying power to this, as well as my thoughts on him being a nice inclusion in the greater franchise -- is genuinely terrifying in Movie 8, picking up on its more dire plot and tone. While he's come to inaccurately represent the franchise in the U.S., he's specifically frightening for how uncharacteristic he is for Dragon Ball. He lacks the hallmarks of Toriyama's villains. No gimmicks. No personality quirks. No magic. No disarmingly sleek or cute design. Not even a sense of animalism a la pure Boo. Just a scary, humanoid appearance and real-world sadism. It's like sticking a serial killer into a cast of colorful supervillains (all the supervillains in Dragon Ball are mass murderers, but I mean tonally). Like putting Jason next to Brainiac. He fills a niche.

These traits aren't unique among Toei's movie villains, but they're never done nearly as well as they are in his initial film.

I couldn't agree more.

Add the fact that he has to be mechanically controlled by his own father just to function.

Agreed. Do you think Broly was genuinely upset his father chose to abandon him on some level before deciding to kill him? Even before being mind controlled, Broly only injured him when he was on a rampage as a teenager. He could have killed him at anytime, but he didn't. Instead of calling him father or dad, he called him pop, a nickname.
