4 galaxies or 4 quadrants of galaxies?

Discussion, generally of an in-universe nature, regarding any aspect of the franchise (including movies, spin-offs, etc.) such as: techniques, character relationships, internal back-history, its universe, and more.

4 galaxies or 4 quadrants of galaxies?

Post by xmysticgohanx » Thu Sep 17, 2015 4:18 pm

And is there any primary canon info on it i.e. the manga etc. or is it just the guidebooks?
Canon is Jaco, Dragon Ball except for EoZ, Dragon Ball Super anime and manga (both are separate canons)

I think this is something Herms would know for sure. But the last time I checked, according to Daizenshuu 7, all the four quadrants are ruled over by a Kai each, and considering in Movie 8 King Kai was fearing that his North Galaxy would be destroyed like the South Galaxy was, it would seem to indeed indicate that the four quadrants ruled over by the Kai's are indeed the four galaxies of the Dragon Ball universe

Daizenshu 7 explains that in the DB universe, a collection of planets forms a "nebula", and a collection of nebulas forms a "galaxy". The series itself explains that there are four cardinal galaxies (also called "areas") in the DB universe and each is overseen by a Kaio, but Daizenshu 7 notes they are merely administrational units used by the gods.

So 4 quadrants of multiple galaxies?

I used to think there were 4 galaxies in each quadrant (one for each Kaioh to look after, with a Kaioshin looking after each quadrant). But apparently there are 4 galaxies total.

"Quadrant" is 100% a Funi dub term. It's not used in the Japanese manga, anime, guides, etc. Instead, the closest is the use of "North Area", "South Area", etc in the manga when South Kaio shows up (it's literally just the English word "area"). Apart from that, in the manga we've just got Kaio introducing himself to the Great Elder as the "Kaio of the North Galaxy", where thanks to the magic of ambiguous Japanese phrasing this could arguably be translated as "North Galaxies" rather than a single North Galaxy.

The guides repeatedly say there are 4 galaxies, NSEW, except for that one Daizenshuu 7 passage that implies there are infinite galaxies (which would make splitting them up into four groups a tad pointless, but I digress).

All of this predates the introduction of the "12 universes" concept in BoG, so it only applies to how things are set up in Universe 7.

Can somebody post that exact passage from the Daizenshuu where it talks about "countless planets and countless nebula" or something to that effect?

When we see Whis flying about in Super with Beerus, it certainly doesn't seem like there's only four galaxies.

Herms does any of the new material from Chozenshuu 1 go into any detail of the galaxies?

Did we ever see any galaxies up close? Or just nebulae/star clusters? Because they can look similar.

Nearest we get is this, which is the South Galaxy shown in the first Broly movie.

Speak of the devil, I messaged Herms for clarification about that Daizenshuu entry just yesterday. I think the entry meant the galaxies existed for an indefinite period of time or that they are spread out over an indefinite amount of area. So just colorful language in other words. Not sure if the Japanese allows that though.

If there is only 4 galaxies then they must be super massive then, cause of that BOG interview which claims the db universe is infinite and ever expanding.

That was referring to the DB franchise and the way it's expanding with all the new material from BoG onwards.

Well, I would focus on stuff from the Manga, Super and recent interviews if it were up to me. I don't think an old guide book from the 90s which has already been invalidated in many of its facts (*cough* Buu *cough*) should be treated as gospel anymore.

Going just by the manga we have it saying "the" North Galaxy, implying there is only one, and presumably one each for the other cardinal directions.

Honestly I think it's pretty clear-cut unless they decide to completely retcon the whole thing.

Meh, the DB Gods probably don't know much about astronomical concepts. They're managers, not scientists.

Herms already said in this very topic that it's not that clear cut. It's still perfectly valid to have a translation of "Kaio of the North Galaxies" from what's said in the Japanese version of the manga.
