Things you hated, but then they grew on you overtime.

Post by dbzfan7 » Tue Sep 22, 2015 10:08 pm

What was something you saw in the franchise you didn't like, but then as time went on, it grew on you. Whether you grew to love it, or you just grew not to hate it so much. I think an interesting topic can come from what may be despised or frowned upon, but then didn't seem so bad after a while. Examples for some can include the Red Ribbon Arc which some feel dragged too long or felt too long. A character you didn't like but then started to grow more on you. An artstyle?

I guess I'd start of with Super Saiyan God. I still am not very fond of the form, but more and more looksie's have made me not as adamant about the form. Things such as getting skinnier, more defined spikier version of Goku's base hair, SSJ3 eyes, and for me more recently looking into, the skin tone change helped distinguish it a bit more for me. I still do not think it's a good form, but I kinda think it's design and attributes has good ideas, but not so great an execution. I do say it grew on me as time went on. Took a couple years, but it did. Can't say the same about the other 2 recent forms on the block which I still think are shit, but SSJ God has grown on me.

Freeza. Mainly cause I only had experience with the funimation dub early on. I did not like Freeza very much. He gender confused me, he sounded really lame, he acted really lame, and I could not take him seriously. Eventually though I saw the more accurate portrayals, and he really grew on me. So much so I really began to like him. I didn't care about this character til I saw the real Freeza. I guess this may not quite count since the only reason I hated Freeza was because of a poor portrayals of him, but I included it anyways.

Mr. Satan. Couldn't stand him as a kid, but now, he's one of my favorite characters.

Same with Krillin, who I had this weird hatred of back in elementary school.

I guess right off the bat I should go with the obvious thing, though the term 'hate' may be a bit strong - the Japanese version of the franchise. I've said it a lot before so I'll keep it short, but for the most part I was mostly turned off from how fans of the dub were treated at the time (and being much younger myself at the time, I obviously took it far more to heart than I should have as well). But over time, I did become interested in the original version due to the different musical score and the different opening songs and such. I only briefly experienced it via movies and the few select series DVD's I had at the time. But once I eventually watched it all the way in full in that version, I grew to not only love the original version, but respect it as well - despite my initial reasoning for checking it out partially being just so I could say I had and could better refute sub fans. Well...that turned out differently. :P

Another obvious thing would be GT I guess. I always used to take the 'everyone hates GT/GT sucks' mantra at face value too, even when I did start to watch it on Toonami. But fast forward to years later with the Season Sets, both watching them dubbed and subbed, I couldn't help but feel that really it's biggest fault was execution. Most of it's ideas were good or at least interesting, but it would mishandle them pretty fast every time. That's still how I feel about it today too. It's a series with great ideas but horrible, horrible execution.

Hmm...I'm a little hesitant to include Vegeta in this listing, since really I haven't warmed up to him at all in concern to how he acts earlier in his character arc (worst example being the Cell arc IMO). If anything I'm more annoyed by him now, and it's only his post-Buu arc material that I'm really able to enjoy his character. I also don't really want to say Evolution, since it's not so much that it's grown on me as I...mostly just don't even give it a thought anymore. I'm sure there's something else that's more fitting to say I 'hated' and it then grew on me later, but I'm not thinking of anything else at the moment.

Goku didn't die in GT. The show sucked him off so much, it was impossible to keep him in the world of the living, so he ascended beyond mortality.

Chris Ayres' Frieza. I thought it sounded beyond lame. Then, it grew on me. Now, I consider it a much better than Linda Young's Frieza. I always liked Frieza though, be it the chain-smoking grandma who hits on Goku or the evil aristocrat who craves a cup of tea and crumpets.

Beerus. Beerus' design did not sit well with me at all, and his role as a fremeny made me sigh. However, after watching the dub, I began to like the character.

The jappense version. I used to hate it and I got so pissed off when people said "Sabat sucks" and that the jappense version had more emotion. Then I read the manga and I started to watch the dub again and I hated it then I checked out the japppense version and I LOVED IT.

Mr. Satan. I don't know what it is, but almost everyone starts to eventually like this guy when they grow up. I think he's hilarious now.

Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan.

The form itself, that is. I still fucking hate that name. But yeah, the form itself initially made me laugh because it was just a blue Super Saiyan. After seeing RoF in the theaters and witnessing the form in action with its awesome looking aura, I kind of gained an appreciation for the form.

I'm with Sean Schemmel in that I think it's the coolest-looking form of Super Saiyan.

Like many, Masako Nozawa's Goku took an open-mind and a few episodes to truly appreciate. Someone dug up a very, very old tweet of mine that contained the words "granny Goku". I hang my head in shame. It's very weird looking back as someone who exclusively watches the show in Japanese these days. I'll also add that it definitely took me a little while to learn and appreciate the nuances of Japanese acting. I think a lot of people are like that, which is why you see things like "the Japanese actors sound too 'normal'". Give it time, folks! You'll soon understand that no Japanese person speaks like that in day to day life. Well, maybe one or two, but they're probably in an asylum.

On the dub side of things -- due to growing up with the Ocean cast, I found it spectacularly difficult to get into FUNi's in-house cast when watching Kai. I knew it was better acted, I knew most of the voices fit far better than before, but it was such a difference that I genuinely struggled with it for a while. Nowadays, I'm perfectly comfortable with the cast, but it definitely took some time. That said, McNeil is still the best English-language Piccolo, and I definitely find Drummond's Vegeta hitting my ear better than Sabat's. There's some things that'll never change, I guess.

Regarding characters in the show, I never much liked Pilaf and co. It was actually their inclusion in Battle of Gods that flipped my opinion on its head. After binge-watching Dragon Ball prior to Super airing, I can confidently say that they're some of my favourite characters, now. Though I'm not sure if that just naturally came about with my interests leaning more towards comedy than action nowadays.

Lastly, to flip the question on its head, I used to adore the Cyborg and Cell arc -- praising it for its serious tone, dark twists and turns, and lengthy fights. These days, I absolutely despise it. It meanders without purpose, and the structure of the fights verges on parody. It's awful. It's not until Gohan's transformation onwards that I find it remotely interesting.

I used to hate the entire Red Ribbon saga before.
Two years ago i rewatched DB once again and I kinda enjoyed. I didn't love it, but I liked more than I ever did.

I still think its the black sheep of the entire series, though.

I hated Kai, the Japanese music and Goku's Japanese VA. Mostly due to the YouTube community as that is where I hung around before joining Kanzenshuu, but hearing all the good stuff on here about the Kai dub I decided to give it a proper go and glad I did, the only thing that took some getting used to was Gohan's new VA in the dub but by the time Cell hit I had gotten used to it, also the music didn't bother me and I only really missed Bruce F on a few occasions, like Goku going SS for the first time aside from that I really enjoyed the Japanese music (it was Kikuchi replacement I have only just been trying to hunt down the Yamamoto score only have part 2 and 4 so far). As for Goku's Japanese VA, I didn't like it at first but have grown after seeing BoG several times and now Super, however I think Schemmel is still the perfect Goku as he now has the mannerisms of Japanese Goku but he sounds like a grown up man, which is still my issue with Goku's Japanese voice I mean I get he is uneducated etc but he should still develop normally and have a manlier voice, being an uneducated idiot doesn't stop this, just like how it didn't stop him reproducing offspring.

Mr Satan. I hated everything about him. But, holy shit, his development in Majin Boo arc was tremendous and I came to appreciate it more and more as the years went by.

Yeah Mr Satan really annoyed me during the Cell Games the first time I saw the show but I warmed to him later on when he was trying to befriend Buu, I like him now.

I was also mixed on the Buu arc the first time I time saw it because I thought it was a lot more childish because of how Fat Buu was and then Mr Satan, Saiyaman, Goten and Trunks and Gotenks but again I grew to like it and its not the best arc but might not be the worst I'm not sure.

All the ED songs of Buu Kai, though they seemed silly at first, got better from repetition.
