That sub pretty clearly says that there is only one Northern Galaxy, and implies that there is only one for the East and West as well, unless they are bigger than the North for some reason. Going by your other post in the galaxy thread, it's pretty clear it doesn't say what you think it says.valfranx wrote:Paragus says soherms me you could confirm this translation of DBZ movie 8? But again, the phrase in question is Kita no Ginga, which on its own could potentially mean "Northern Galaxies" as well as "Northern Galaxy". Same for Nishi no Ginga (Western Galaxy/Galaxies) and Higashi no Ginga (Eastern). Overall I think it makes the most sense to opt for "Northern Galaxy", since that's the Occam's Razor approach and there's plenty of guide material and whatnot specifying that there are four galaxies in all, but "Northern Galaxies" is still a potential way of translating it.

That may be so, and I wouldn't think of arguing with your knowledge of Japanese. I was just referring to the sub itself, since the poster had previously argued in a separate thread that it meant the exact opposite of what it actually said.Herms wrote:But again, the phrase in question is Kita no Ginga, which on its own could potentially mean "Northern Galaxies" as well as "Northern Galaxy". Re: The All-Purpose "Translation Request" Thread
In the VIZ translation, it's more common for pieces of dialogue from the original line to be missing. But I noticed that in Piccolo's statement while on their way to meet the androids, he mentions the idea of having confidence in his "own power" which Herms' translation in the Strength Checker does not detail:

I normally side with Herms regarding these sort of things but I'd like some clarity on whether there's a word for "power" in there or if it's something the VIZ translator took upon himself, and what is truly meant by the context of Piccolo's response?

Re: The All-Purpose "Translation Request" Thread
The phrase in question:
オレだって自信がないわけがない
Ore datte jishin ga nai wake ga nai
"It's not like I don't have confidence."
So a double negative indicating that he does have confidence. No specific mention of power or the androids. However, オレだって/Ore datte emphasizes "I". If you ditched the double negative, an alternative translation could be "I've got confidence too, you know". Piccolo emphasizing that he, specifically, has confidence is probably why Viz went with him saying he doesn't doubt his own power.

It says Beerus abolishes the risk of the universe being destroyed when the gods' clash a third time. And Goku's going to revert back to regular Super Saiyan.

Re: The All-Purpose "Translation Request" Thread
Getting back to the question I asked about names before, how does a translator know whether a letter/sound is just for emphasis or a necessary part of the name? I know Simmons uses "Yamucha", "Kibit", and "Kakarot", but elsewhere I see translations that use "Yamcha", "Kibito", and "Kakarotto". Why is it acceptable to drop the -to from "Kakarotto" but not from "Kibito"?

Re: The All-Purpose "Translation Request" Thread
It's based on the name source/name pun, and after that just personal preference. Kibito is a pun on the Japanese word tsukibito/attendant, while Kakarot is a pun on the English word "carrot", so it makes sense to keep the "o" for the former and leave it off for the later. That's the theory, anyway, but it's not a science. One could just as easily argue that the "carrot" pun is still easy to spot with the "Kakarotto" spelling, and that keeping the "to" is necessary to ensure Vegetto's name makes sense. There's nothing in the name spellings themselves to indicate which parts are "necessary" or not. It all depends on context and personal preference.Tyro wrote:Getting back to the question I asked about names before, how does a translator know whether a letter/sound is just for emphasis or a necessary part of the name? Re: The All-Purpose "Translation Request" Thread
I see. Does Yamcha's name also come down to preference? What do you make of the "Blooma"/"Bulma" argument?
Re: The All-Purpose "Translation Request" Thread
My take on that is that author himself has been consistently wrong for so long, it's hard to fight it or shake it. "Bulma" as a term will die when Dragon Ball itself dies.Tyro wrote:What do you make of the "Blooma"/"Bulma" argument?
