Thoughts on the Resurrection "F" score by Sumitomo?

Post by Baggie_Saiyan » Fri Oct 09, 2015 4:34 pm

So I have been browsing this forum but haven't seen a topic dedicated to people's thought on his score for the new movie. So I'd thought i'd make one with the BD releases coming out and all.

Anyway, having the seen the film now, I must say I was very impressed. With Sumitomo I had found his tracks largely well forgettable. Like it supplements the scene well but when the scene is over I am struggling to think of the track that was played, but for Resurrection "F" I had a different experience. His "goofy" stuff is still pretty bad like pilaf theme and Shenny's theme but the tracks I was impressed by were the one's that played in base Goku vs Freeza and then the one used for the new transformations, where it started with that ominous piano key playing and ended with the GF chant, I think it really fitted the scene very well. I also liked the track used in the SSGSS vs GF fight after the the "F" song instrumental. And finally the chanting when Goku steals Vegeta's spotlight was hilarious

It is just a shame his "goofy" tracks haven't improved that much. He is on par with the Faulc Prod. score in that regard.

I don't recall a single theme.

That says it all to me. =P

Yup, exact same deal here. I mean, I vaguely recall some choir chants towards the end, but I'll be totally honest, Sumitomo has only managed to impress me two times thus far, and they were both in the Buu arc of Kai ("Goku," and the unreleased track that plays when Vegeta sacrifices himself).

You know...now that I'm thinking about it, it seems like every Japanese composer after Kikuchi has been a continual downgrade. I know there are a multitude of factors when deciding on a new music composer, but if it were me personally, I would have put Shiro Sagisu (Neon Genesis Evangelion, Bleach) in charge of the music. That's assuming of course that they couldn't have talked Kikuchi himself into coming back, which is a pity, because the guy is still alive, still well, and still composing music.

Sumitomo's worst DB score!

The tracks fit more to a horror movie than in DB. Also, he made only a few tracks and many of them sound almost the same (just listen to 06, 09, 13, 18, 20). The movie needed more music!

He's still composing?? I thought he retired after Dragon Ball Z? Do you know where I can find any of his new music? Has he been composing for anime/TV shows or just putting out music for general release?

I know the names of many tracks I like by Sumitomo, but very few could I even hum. Sadly, the ones I can hum are the worst of his bunch. They were drummed into me through Boo Kai.

Kei's been placing Kikuchi in Resurrection 'F', and it's just been making me more and more depressed that we don't have his music in the new content.

As hard as I've tried, I can't find a listing of his work that's organized by dates. Which is unfortunate, because just by looking at the titles of what he's composed, I can't tell if they're recent or not (I love his work on the Dragon Ball franchise, but it's the only work of his that I'm familiar with). Having said that, he is credited as being involved in the music for the 2005 Doraemon series. He's also credited for all of the Doraemon shows that came before that though, so it could be that they're just re-using themes he came up with a while back. *Shrug*

His lighthearted tracks still need a bit of work, but I thought his score over was very good. It fit quite well considering that the tone of movie was more dark in comparison to BOG.

Easily the weakest part of the new film.
Well, that and Gohan.

The orchestral and dramatic music is decent enough, but the ambient and laid back cues are weak and don't really fit Dragon Ball. Also, while Freeza's new reoccurring theme for this particular feature is interesting by itself, it is so awkwardly out of place in the film given the fact that his power doesn't really warrant an over the top choir in the slightest. It would have made more sense if his new transformation was the result of receiving the power of a God, but it's just another evolution of his and there's nothing really divine about it.

It's very hard to notice any particular tracks to be honest, they blend into the background too well :')
