If you wanna be all fussy and make a big deal out of little things you consider "silly" (which in fact can work within cannon if you give it a little thought), then go ahead.

I think the majority of people are in love with the special and majority rules (why don't we start a poll).

Anyone saying this isn't classic DBZ at its best is dismissing the spirit and flavor of Toriyama in favor of their own ideas of what DBZ should be, a story that should be restrained to a very narrow interpretation of things (there are only 3 Saiyans alive bla bla). People who normally work on the fanfiction side of things, for example, tend to embrace a wider definition of this universe, where remnants of both the Ice-jin and the Saiya-jin empire may have survived in the outer rims of space (remnants Vegeta would have been oblivious to, including te brother he could have consider long dead at this point).

Now flay me if you will.
I couldn’t agree more. :D
The Saiyans are very much like the Klingons and Jem'Hadar.

Whether this special is canonical or not means nothing to me. I really enjoyed it, and that's more than I can say for most of the movies (and any of the filler). More stuff like this would be fine with me! :D

I enjoy it more than many of the movies.

Fixed it for you.

The majority of people complaining seem to be under the impression that FUNimation's re-versioning is somehow an accurate depiction of the show.

Now when you say "classic DBZ", do you mean the rollicking fun times of the Saiyan Saga, the laugh-a-minute Freeza Saga, or the pissing-yourself-with-mirth Cell Saga? :P

*sigh* Must the FUNimation dub be the single fault for every single misconception have with DragonBall? I mean, come on man. That was just a low cheap shot.
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
You act like some of the goofyness wasn't apparent in any of those sagas. DB has ALWAYS been goofy. It mixes light-hearted fun with action. In those sagas it was just toned down a bit, but Buu saga definitely was bringing it back.

I can't believe people have an issue (btw, this is unrelated to the above poster) with Tarble. Like Toriyama has never said, "Hey I'm Radditz, I'm your brother.." or "Hey I'm trunks, I'm vegeta and bulma's son from the future.." or "Hey I'm Uuub, I'm majin buu reborn" or whatever. It's no sillier than ANY of those things. I imagine if they had this special go on an hour or so or if there were a series of episodes to make up this story you guys would change your tune. Why? Because then Tarble could be developed more.

This special is like a shortened version of a great idea for an entire saga. If Toriyama WANTED to he probably could have done all kinds of little plot twists and ideas like he usually does to make the story more interesting.... but this was just a little special. I feel like the heart he always put into the story was there and that's what made it so much fun. It isn't just mindless action like a lot of the dbz movies.

This special is better than all of GT in my mind... simply because Toriyama helped give it that classic "DB" feeling.

No it isn't.

I was speaking in terms of the way the series is perceived by fans, and the FUNimation dub is 100% responsible for trying to make the show into something it isn't; the faux-hardcore rock and roll space wrestling show.

My problem is that many of the people that are complaining about this special (not on this forum) are doing so because of the way the series was (incorrectly) presented by FUNimation, because DBZ wasn't presented as a mix of comedy action and adventure, it was watered down into a brainless action cartoon, and that's where the backlash is coming from; fans were expecting a movie that replaced Broli, with Super Saiya-jin Tarble.

I vanish from the DB world for a while, and the day I decide to visit Daizex I find this!

This special was proper wicked! I really enjoyed it and it reminded me about how big a fan I was (and still am) of this series. It's not as if there were enough plotholes to have a serious debate over whether it's canon or not, but still , it does need to be talked about, but the truth is it's not much of a bother to me.

To be brutally honest, before watching this I was thinking 'I bet it's gonna be similar to the footage that was on the PlayDia game'(which was nice but nothing special), but it was actually more like a mini episode rather than looking like several clips joined together.

Ok, let me conclude this post by giving my main reasons on why this was so great:

- Mainly, I enjoyed it
- The art style was very similar to Toriyama's new style of art.
- It brang back good memories
- It made me giggle to my self on loads of parts (it was late at night, plus I don't tend to burst out with laughter anyway, but it was funny)
- ORIGINAL BGM!!!

Ok I'm done now.

I'm a take it as canon, for my own sake. And my reasoning is this;

1, it's not a film. As far as I recall, Special's were taken as canon (at least on the animated side).
And 2, nothing contradicts anything, plot wise. Elements were added, not taken away. Think about it, before dismissing it.

Either way, you can believe what you want. No one's forcing it one way, or the other, right? Enjoy it for what it was. Fan Service for our eager, hungry Dragon Ball Stomachs.

Where? All the BGM I noticed was reused from the show. There's supposed to be a new theme for the special, but so far it's been missing in action.

I think he means it was the original bgm, not an original bgm :)

"This is all I can show you so from now on you'll have to look into their world with your own eyes, but maybe that will be even more fun!" -Akira Toriyama

I always saw this as the series being left open for fan interpretation.

Manga = Stone
Anything else; anime, specials, movies, GT, AF doujinshi, etc whatever you feel could fit in your eyes = fairly hard concrete.

If that's true, then why is everything absolutely solid or canon "set in stone" and not "set in concrete"? :P

Not saying you're wrong or anything... just sayin'.

Because concrete is a mixture of sand, gravel, and cement. You can break through that easily with a jackhammer, but something such as bedrock would be much more difficult to drill through. Concrete is man-made, whereas stone has existed since the beginning of time.

In short, based upon the ending narration alone I would have to say that the new special should be considered canon. At the very least, it should be considered anime canon.
