Ok, I suck at reading pronunciations, it's the one thing I never learned. I could never stop pronouncing words I haven't heard before as I would in Spanish
Is it Beer-oos? or Virus like in English? And what about Uis?

I'm pronouncing it "beer us" so even if I can't spell his name that way any more, I can at least sound like I'm telling someone to give me and my crew a beer everytime I say it.

I'm kind of pronouncing it like 'Virus' only with a 'B' in my head now, since that's the name pun. Like 'Bairus' I guess is another way to put it.

I grabbed a bunch of magazines and the official movie guide in this order. The one nice thing is I keep wracking up more points on CDJapan, and give a percentage back to Kanzenshuu to help us out. I hope everyone that orders follows our links. *hint hint*

I gotta ask: Why did Krillin shrink again, and why did Vegeta grow taller again?

Well, from what I understand, pronounce it just as you would in spanish, that's what I do, anyways..Rod wrote:Ok, I suck at reading pronunciations, it's the one thing I never learned. I could never stop pronouncing words I haven't heard before as I would in Spanish

Since Birus pun comes from the German word for Virus, which it's closer in pronunciation to how we say it in Spanish.
Yes, Goku visited me once. He turned to me while I was still speechless, and said, "You've drank too much"...

Track 42 (CHA-LA HEAD-CHA-LA - A Peaceful Earth) is a wonder! Modern but very nostalgic. It's bring forth the memories when I was a kid and hurried from the school to see the new episode of DBZ. Thanks, Mr. Sumitomo!

Thing is, we've always known how to pronounce "Birus(u)". Japanese kana doesn't leave much room for ambiguity in that area, and if you've ever watched the previews or other clips you should have heard it pronounced plenty of times. The only question is whether you want to go with some other pronunciation that's closer to how "virus" is pronounced in English or some other language. But if you opt to do that, there's no real proper or improper way to go about it. You're inventing a new pronunciation based on your own preferences about how to handle the name pun.

Hum... For Birus, I tend to naturally read it as "Bee-rus" in French conversations, but "By-rus" in English sentences (to keep it close to the "Virus" pronunciation in each language).Rod wrote:Ok, I suck at reading pronunciations, it's the one thing I never learned. Uis should be pronunced "Oo-is" I guess, but it's too weird for me (especially since in French it sounds like the very unique beginning of the world "ouistiti", meaning "marmoset" in English, it can't be taken too seriously, it's as ridiculous as if he was named something like "cutey-doggy" or something like that in English!!), I think I'll keep it to Vis (pronunced "Vees" and not like the word "Vice", which is logical in French but not in English since I guess you would indeed pronunce it like "Vice").
To me - and even though it bypasses Kanzenshuu's wise choice of keeping the latin influence for Uis -, it'll be Birus and Vis, "By-rus" and "Vees", until perhaps an official occidental version is revealed over here in months.

You know, ultimately and as always, everybody's pretty free to choose the names and pronunciations they want as long as it remains understandable in conversations.

Oh yeah, that's true, they do say it more like 'Beer-us' in the footage we have...hmm. Maybe I do need to try to get used to saying it that way. But from what you're saying, choosing to say it more like the original word the pun comes from (in this case 'Virus') isn't exactly 'wrong' either? It's pretty much just a...personal choice thing, kinda?Herms wrote:Thing is, we've always known how to pronounce "Birus(u)". I haven't decided on how to say it yet. Before the puns were revealed I was saying it "bee-roo-su". I like both "beer-us" and "by-rus". Hmm..
I did use SAL so I should get my magazine around the same time as everyone. :3
Also wishing he wore his Buu arc outfit while dancing. As someone who knows multiple dancers I can say doing a pirouette like that is definitely difficult, especially with his arms posed that way.
