Re: Dragon Ball Super: Manga Chapter 82 - Official Discussion Thread
hahaha...this chapter is, I can see people being split on it. But I kinda enjoyed it. It's definitely the most "fun" I've had with this arc. And while I still have severe reservation of where this arc is going, I was surprised by how many moments I did fine fun. Basically, Goku taking the piss ut of the fight and straight up humiliating Gas (like leading him into literal trash) is fun in a way that I don't think Goku has been in awhile. And talking shit the entire time! "You do everything your brother tells you?" "Be careful, my own brother tried to kill me!"
Also the urinating gag seems like something straight out of TFS.
I think the most controversial aspect of this chapter continues to be the changes they're clearly making to Bardock. Namely, sounds like he's no longer a mere low class warrior like he was in Z, since Gas' implies that Bardock, much like Goku, is far beyond that of what he's supposed to be. I don't care for where they seem to be going with this, and I guess we'll know next month whether they do finally make Bardock a super saiyan (or some other weird form) canon.
But for now...I liked this chapter. Which is more than I can say for the last couple of months.

Re: Dragon Ball Super: Manga Chapter 82 - Official Discussion Thread
Wow...that chapter was A LOT better than I anticipated! Like, HOLY CRAP, Toyotarou, why could the previous chapters be this good?
The chase between Gas and Goku was pretty funny (that pant wetting joke and the scene with Whis got me rolling), the pace was actually reasonably quick (FINALLY), and the story seems to be taking an interesting direction! (for the first time in forever).
So far, Goku remembering Bardock is...well, it's pretty much the same as the spoilers have already revealed to us. I still don't have any strong opinions on it , so time will tell how that plays out for Goku.
Unfortunately, Gas is still pretty bland. His pant wetting joke might be the most substantial character development we have gotten so far tbh.
I'm pretty stoked to see Bardock fight Gas in the next chapter (just hoping he won't go SSJ)!

That's a version of Gas that I would have loved to have seen in the the arc: One that takes himself way too seriously, which causes everyone to shit on him relentlessly. Also Goku after tricking him to get pile on by trash: "Hey there's a river there if you need to clean yourself up, I'll be waiting" was great.PurestEvil wrote: Fri Mar 18, 2022 11:16 am

Yeah..where the fuck was this hiding. The writing, the jokes--why did we have to wait this long for something like this?
Also...Gas isdefinitely going to make a heroic turn right? There's no way he goes full villain.

I have to imagine that Toyo was inspired by TFS (because there's no way he's not aware of them), and the joke setting, with everyone focusing on a minor detail that has nothing to do with the main conflict, is exactly something I expect from TFS, that I absolutely read all of that with Goku's TFS voice. Not a bad thing, just something I was not expecting.PurestEvil wrote: Fri Mar 18, 2022 11:22 amHa, now that REALLY sounds like a TFS scriptkemuri07 wrote: Fri Mar 18, 2022 11:19 amThat's a version of Gas that I would have loved to have seen in the the arc: One that takes himself way too seriously, which causes everyone to shit on him relentlessly. This chapter really felt like a breath of fresh air.
The Oracle fish didn’t recognize Gas so does that mean that Gas isn’t ”the strongest in the universe” since the Oracle fish has seen a dream about the strongest fighter?

Re: Dragon Ball Super: Manga Chapter 82 - Official Discussion Thread
Easily the most interesting chapter we've had in 5 months.
There's some levity in fun comic relief situations, things actually happen, the scenery changes and it changes rapidly to boot, Goku remembers his folks, Bardock's flashback continues. The title page appearing near the end this time was also a neat touch. Action and storytelling were never mutually exclusive in the original manga, nor should they be that way in Super. This month finally has enough material to chew on for 45 pages of content, disjointed as it is from the story told a year to half a year ago.
Entertaining stuff... in isolation. Like Bardock's involvement in general, it fares well enough by itself, and probably would have worked in a different arc, but I can't just pretend that we're not still reading the Granolah arc. I still find myself wondering if the focus will ever shift back to the arc's (now questionably) main character before it ends.
But yeah, within a very sealed vacuum? Not bad. I liked it.

I mean, can anyone tell me what this arc has even been about. Because it seems like it shifts and changes what the actual focus so often that It's hard to get a reading of what the central focus is. Is it about Granollah getting revenge? Is it about Vegeta finding peace with his genocidal past? Or is it about Goku remembering Bardock? And there's a better written version of this arc in which it can be all three of these things. But there needs to be an emotional foundation in which all of these subplots can build off of. I don't think that's whats happening here, and why so many feel like the last couple of chapters are fairly boring--there's nothing of substance here.
I think 83 is gonna be the make it or break it for this arc. We'll finally know what's going on with Bardock, and I really hope it doesn't go where I think its going to go.

Yup, it's gonna be Goku after his new power-up I feel. Whis already confirmed that Goku will get a new UI version after the Bardock flashback.Aizamasu wrote: Fri Mar 18, 2022 11:28 am This chapter really felt like a breath of fresh air.

Mindblowing chapter. Really, for me it was that good.
I loved every single thing. From the art, to that Gas wetting himself joke which literally made me laugh out, something I rarely do when reading manga, and to Goku’s absolutely perfect characterisation, and witty tactics.
And that finale… I wouldn’t have had Goku remembering of his parents in any other way, because the way it happens just makes so much sense. And I love it. Especially if this leads to a power up as Goku taps into his inner self to find the strength to beat Gas. Could he then be the warrior the oracle fish was talking about, then? I think he will.
I wonder how Goku’s “own” version of Ultra Instinct will look. I would prefer it if his appearance was the same as in his base form, but I wouldn’t mind if he got fully outlined eyes so that he more resembles his father - that would be neat.
Now I am finally very very hyped for what’s next. Absolutely great work from Toyotaro.

Absolutely loved this chapter. It had everything. Goku remembering his parents is one of the most consequential things to happen in Super, and I'm pretty surprised they went there. I feel that it justifies telling all of the Bardock stuff in the first place. I'm looking forward to Goku finding out who he is.
Re: Dragon Ball Super: Manga Chapter 82 - Official Discussion Thread
Bardock was never a low class warrior. In his special, he was said to be 10k. That's stronger than friggin Nappa.kemuri07 wrote: Fri Mar 18, 2022 11:12 am hahaha...this chapter is, I can see people being split on it. But I kinda enjoyed it. Just a quick thought, the chapter seems to imply that Elec will soon betray Gas. Maybe he will be the final boss, somehow? He has felt like the true villain since the beginning, so it wouldn’t surprise me. He got some wishes we haven’t seen, and the exact formulation of how he wished for Gas to become stronger is still also a secret. There must be some downside, and maybe this downside goes to Elec’s advantage? What if he can absorb Gas, or his power?

I thought the lightning from Goku in the leaks was just a visual effect, but now I'm thinking he's actually powering up into his new UI after remembering.

Toriyama's Bardock is among the strongest low class Saiyans, but couldn't be promoted to mid class, according to the man himself.

Ok, now we have something to work on with Gas. It's not much but his devotion to Elec is definetely going to play a role later and I can dig it. He may not end up as a totally bad guy too, like Granolah. We will probably have more insight about him in the next chapter.
There also some interesting implications for the future. Oracle Fish not recognizing Gas, Goku finding his "own version" of UI, and the Bardock stuff. I just wonder what role Vegeta and Granolah are going to play here. Granolah in particular has the deepest connection with the main villains so he has to play a major role in this climax

Re: Dragon Ball Super: Manga Chapter 82 - Official Discussion Thread
Great chapter. The prisoners switching to bullying him once they realised he wouldn't let them out was fucking hillarious.
I didn't expect Goku to teleport back. I guess he hoped he'd attack Whis like Broly.
The memories back thing is cool but I wonder what they will do with it and if and how it will relate to his mastery of UI.
I think broadly it's easier to he calm when you really truly know yourself. So getting missing memories back seems more complete. And yeah.
I think there's a cool opportunity here they probably won't go with.
We've seen Goku become more battle obsessed as he gets older and embraces his Saiyan heritage more and more. But perhaps seeing his Saiyan parents actually act really human might bring him full circle and calm him down in time for EoZ.
Kinda works as a head canon.
I still wanna see how Bardock beat Gas, I don't think it will be brute force including super Saiyan.
I do think this needs to wrap up in two chapters tops.
Ironically we don't need it to wrap up in time for the movie now it's been delayed...

Again, the special is a completely different continuity. Toriyama had no involvement in Z Bardock beyond the character design, and the interview makes it very clear that he's specifically referring to his own conception of the character in Minus (hence his mention of Gine).OLKv3 wrote: Fri Mar 18, 2022 12:13 pm He was talking about Z Bardock.
