Why so much hatred towards this name?

Discussion, generally of an in-universe nature, regarding any aspect of the franchise (including movies, spin-offs, etc.) such as: techniques, character relationships, internal back-history, its universe, and more.

Not to open up a touchy can of worms or anything, but the gigantic swath of Bible belt we got going on down in the midwest disagrees very much with this statement. And they're certainly not in some kind of tiny, minuscule, rapidly dwindling minority or anything. And besides, if disrespect for Christianity was really that rampant here, why would FUNi even need to worry about conservative parents freaking out about a name like Mr. Satan in the first place?
I should have qualified it by saying the super fans and media at large. Like I said I can see why but just in general unless the religion has a subjective focus to it the majority disrespects it and that includes Christianity, Judaism and Islam. In addition to this according to Barna Christianity is dwindling in America.
The Saiyans are very much like the Klingons and Jem'Hadar.

I agree completley here. More than likely, this is EXACTLY what happened, or what FUNi feared would happen. This justification seems to make the most sense in regards to Mr. Satan's name change.

I'm not sure which reason is dumber.

I really, really doubt Buddhists would care.

I don't like Mark's dub name because "Mr. Saturn" was a much better choice for retaining the "Wrestling name" vibe while simultaneously sounding much closer to his Japanese name.

It isn't "Dub Name Vs Japanese Name" it's "Japanese AND UNCUT Dub name from the DVDs Vs. Crappy Edited Dub name from the TV version"

They called him Mr. Satan in the Dub, where is the Problem?

Mr. Satan is his ring name. Mark is his real name. Where he comes from people don't have surnames. So it's not Mark Satan.

FUNimation just got scared of the thought of religious people complaining about there being an anime with someone with"Satan" in the name. I mean, come on, seriously?

I think they should've kept with Mr. Satan. Fuck the people who complain, Hercule is not his name. For a long time, I thought Mr. Satan's first name was Hercule, not Mark. It's better to keep most of the original names.

Can I just point out that Hercules was a demi-god (half man, half god) not an actual god? He did become a full-blown god after his death, but that was after his whole monster-fighting career was done with. I'm not really sure what the article means when it says Hercules was not above cheating. He got help fighting the Hydra and whatnot, but I don't believe he ever claimed to have killed any monster that he actually hadn't.

That's no excuse for people going "GRAAAAAAAAARGH" when they hear it. The anger and frustration makes no sense.

They DID Keep with Mr. Satan.
It was ONLY Her-cule in the Edited Dub, on the DVDs, it was Mr. Satan, even in the Dub.

And I know Mr. Satan is apparently his Stage name, and Mark is his real name, I was trying to include both when I said that.

I think one of the Super Exciting Guides (Character Volume, I think.) revealed Mr. Satan's name, that being "Mark".

I'd say FUNimation. The Satan change makes sense (if you were to use anything other than Piccolo), as Piccolo is literally the evil adversary of God. Why they didn't take "Lucifer" instead for Mr Satan afterwards, I don't know, but FUNi taking the French word for Hercules is just as, if not more stupid.

On the uncut DVDs they do refer to him as "He.rcule Satan" often.

I think people seem to underestimate the power of offended parents. Having a popular character (storywise) name Satan in what could be the most popular cartoon on television at the time could have caused such an uproar that it could have killed Dragonball in the US, and possibly had reprcusions on other anime being released.

Irregardless of the the media tries to say, there are parents out there with strong morals who care what their children are exposed to. And trying to downplay the importance of it because it not something that we would take up arms about is just foolish.

Yay!! Reading is Fun!! :D

Anyway, I see Her-cule in DBZ the same way I see Roronoa Zolo in One Piece. It's NOT the character's name, and it reminds me of the terrible dub.
It's Mr. Satan and Roronoa Zoro.

I think because most people are against changing and censoring things form the original version. I used to be fine with it and go with it, because I didn't wanna blurt out to kids "Mr. Satan".
