Holy shit I watched the Japanese dub of Saiyan Saga Kai with my mom that shit had so much cursing Vegeta even dropped the F-bomb a couple times at the end, t'was awesome though, really added to the intensity my mom said it's the best show she's ever seen, my MOM. Not once did the cursing seem excessive or forced, it really felt like a gritty, mature show with all the refreshed sound effects, animations, and especially the incredible soundtrack that was absolutely relentless in pushing the drama to the limit. Kai is way better than Z, even the script is more mature and brutal, honestly I never appreciated the filler episodes anyway. I can't wait to watch it with my dad, whom I watched the entire Z series with, if you haven't watched the Japanese version with the proper translations I suggest you do so.

Dragon Ball is just a kids show not meant to be taken seriously or maturely, and besides, it aired at 9am when kids would watch it and then One Piece afterwards.

Your mum should check out 3000 Leagues in Search of Mother, I bet she'd love it.

I don't know what version you watched but you aren't giving it enough credit, Dragon Ball is easily dramatic and gritty enough to stand out as a show for an older audience, why do you think we have this website and all you people, yeah its more for fun but so is a lot of adult oriented media, if a normal adult can't tell the difference then who's to say there is one.

Goku didn't die in GT. The show sucked him off so much, it was impossible to keep him in the world of the living, so he ascended beyond mortality.

It's not aimed only on kids. You are a kid until 12.

The point isn't that it isn't for kids, its just that its a show with a storyline well written and dramatic/gritty enough to be enjoyed by a much older audience and thus it isn't just "for kids" (when it isn't dumbed the fuck down to be "just for kids")

Calling it a 'kids show that isn't supposed to be taken seriously' is implying the intellectual content of the show is solely for a young audience while this isn't true, Kai wasn't made to please 12 year old kids because they demanded a more accurate manga version they wouldn't care about something like that this was for the adult audience that wanted this, also its fantasy entertainment with very little social commentary of course its not supposed to be taken seriously that says nothing about who its made for.

Nothing dumb and kiddy about anything written in Dragonball. Not once did I see something stupid in Dragon Ball, chuckle to myself and say "Well this was made for like, 8 year olds." Not once.

Is Harry Potter to blame for this sort of thing? I feel like Harry Potter is to blame. Y'know when JK Rowling decided to be "adult" which basically amounted to her Beebop and Rocksteady villains still being Saturday morning cartoon levels of incompetent but now there's a gritty filter on her nonsensically lazy universe, the Nazi allusion is slammed into our head every second of every page and she kills incredibly minor, superfluous characters that haven't been used in books? Meanwhile she's telling everyone "Yeah, my books are pretty core' now brah!" I feel like that has to have warped a generation's definition of "mature" and "adult" some, right?

Well Dragon Ball did go through a huge transformation along the way as the characters grew up, but even goofy things like King Kai's planet were self consciously goofy and funny for it, really all Japanese stuff has this kind of goofy humor, you can't deny the stark contrast of this to when things get serious, a poop joke from the beginning of the manga says nothing about the version of Kai I watched which I watched with my mom who never came close to getting the idea the show was for 8 year olds, which is absolutely retarded to think.

IIRC Kai was made to please the younger/newcomers audience who did not watch Dragon Ball Zetto in Japan, because, 1) they weren't born at that time or 2) they didn't care.

But it's not only for kids. It's aimed at late kid years (10-12), teens (13-17) & even adults (18+). Same goes for every shounen manga/anime.

Yes, that's what I said. For kids and everyone else.

By today's western standards Dragon Ball isn't for kids but for older teens because it's too bloody, fights all the time and, yeah, that.

Freeza impaling Kuririn was one of the scenes cut out from various countries back then, I only realized this happened when I got the Dragon Box Z Vol. Four.

DBZ's games are kiddy too, there's no blood, the punches, kicks and whatever aren't very realistic.

They cut out all the filler and made it closer to the manga for those who wanted a more accurate motion version of the manga, they revised it. If they wanted to just re-air it they would have just re-aired it, but they made it closer to the manga not for the kiddies who could care less but for those who were long time fans. Dragon Ball is for multiple age groups, but by western standards the uncut Japanese dub of Kai would be strictly for adults.

I know VegettoEX might strike me for this, but please don't call the Japanese version a "dub" that's so disappointing, when referring to a dub we normally talk about the international countries that dubbed it not the Japanese, the JP is Japanese audio.

Yeah, technically what they've done was dubbing the show, but to separate it from the other dubs it's typically Japanese audio and dubs exemplar dubs of countries: French, Portuguese, Spanish, Korean, Chinese, English, etc.

Btw, I forgot this, DBK also has a bit less blood than DBZ, watch Piccolo's Mankankosappo Vs. Raditz/Goku, Vejita on the brink of death doesn't spit out blood and Kuririn's impalement lasts less than in Z.

Kai basically has less blood than in Z, but who cares about blood, for blood just play Bulletstorm the price of Bulletstorm has decreased incredibly wow! or Mortal Kombat 2011.

The removal of blood was to make the scene's closer resemble the manga panels, and I meant to say sub.
