Dragonball Volume 9-Given Support...
Everyone needs to watch out for that new Viz Logo...it started with Volume 22 of DBZ and I guess all new Editions of previous volumes of Dragonball and Dragonball Z, which will now have this Logo, will be censored and dubbed down, which is just fucking great.
Anyway, the new Logo is like...a thin outlined box with the words "VIZ MEDIA" Inside. The old Logo is a slighlty more creative design, and the shape is hard to describe...but the key is that it just says "VIZ".
So, if you want good stuff for everything previous to Volume 15 of DBZ, look for the old logo. If you want to support a combination of over-sheltered parents and those willing to skewer artwork, then go for the new logo Volumes.
What else is there to say?

Leave it to Viz t take take steps backwards...
Seriously, everyone else seems to get it. (Tokyopop, Del Rey...) Now Viz has the top names in manga and they are fucking up royally. It's sad to see a company rise up to the glory that was the first year of Shonen Jump from the ashes of forced censorship and see them fall once more to soccer moms and greed...

Actually I do own the original Japanese (I thought I already mentioned that). But I'd rather have a version that's professionally translated (and accurate).Izlude wrote:Toriyama can't write english though so unless you buy the original japanese.... XD
I don't particularly care if it's "100% accurate". I understand that in many cases there is just no such thing as a "perfect translation". But there is a big difference between perfect and accurate, and over the years I've just run into too many mangas that have been so badly translated. It really isn't even that hard. It seems like Viz would have to go to less trouble to just translate what it says on the page, instead of making all these changes. And as I said in my first post, I don't even know what changes they made. If all they do is change stuff like Mr. Satan to Her.cule and Majin to Djiin, while I don't agree with it, I can accept that as long as I know the rest of what I'm reading is fine. But when I go back to my manga to check what someone said, I don't want to have to worry about "well what if Viz changes this or what if Viz changed that". If that's too much to ask for (which it really isn't) then Viz quite frankly doesn't deserve my money.Izlude wrote:No, but seriously, something is always lost in translations and unable to attain 100% perfection without every character sounding the same. Then there's the process of adaption/localization and making the manga "suitable" for its target audience. Thats a fact and its something all the big manga publishers in the USA (and other countries) practice. If you can't accept that, then your better off buying the original japanese if thats want you really want.

So this is the only way we can tell if the manga's been edited?! Damn. I'm pretty sure this will convince the public library -_-
BoBoBo's manga has "Papa Rocks" while the anime has Don Patch. Consistancy with Viz? No such thing exists. Especially if they even say Scar in Fullmetal Alchemist is an Ishvarlan in Vol. 2 and then say he's an Ishbalan in Vol. 4.Chaos Saiyajin wrote:Viz can't even dub anime and manga the same! For example, we've got 'Sexy Jutsu' in the Naruto anime and 'Ninja Centerfold' in the Naruto manga.
Get your shit together, people.
At least with Naruto's case, the stupidity from the manga isn't affecting the anime. Unfortunately, BoBoBo's suffering from it what with "Gasser" being in the anime now.
My main beef with Viz is the insulting of our intelligence. Ratings are there for a reason. You don't take something that you rated T for Teens and then edit it to make it for All Ages. There's no big ruckus going on now like there was years ago regarding Goku's thing or Bulma offering Goku a feel of her ass. Viz needs to stop being such damn hypocrites and learn that just because something can be marketed at kids doesn't mean you should attempt it, otherwise you're gonna piss off a lot of fans.
As if the first censoring of Dragon Ball, [removed 'cause these aren't examples of censorship], removal of middle fingers, changing the name of an attack that mentioned Hell, Hercule, dialogue screwing, and Djinn Buu weren't insulting enough as is. It's as if Viz wants us to resort to having someone attempt scanlating the manga like 4Kids is forcing people to resort to fansubs of One Piece.
I'm quite sure, this time, Mr. Toriyama's had no say in the editing of the manga.
Well I just don't think he's very concerned about any of it. In the beginning, if he actually did have to give his permission (I doubt he actually looked over any of it), he probably just gave his consent to allow Viz to make the "necessary" edits and modifications to his manga so they could release it for the "appropriate" audience. I doubt it was a case-by-case deal. At this point Toriyama probably isn't the least bit involved with the process.

Things like that happened in Inuyasha as well with "Iron claw" or something like that in the manga and the dub's "Iron Reaver Soul Stealer". Though I prefer the latter name. It sounds cooler.Chaos Saiyajin wrote:Viz can't even dub anime and manga the same! For example, we've got 'Sexy Jutsu' in the Naruto anime and 'Ninja Centerfold' in the Naruto manga.

And what the hell is a Cultivar? Saibamen, Viz! Saibamen!
I really, really need to get back into the habit of posting.

Thanks for the tip Duo. I still need to buy Vols. 14-16 of DB, need to make sure I get the best version.Everyone needs to watch out for that new Viz Logo...it started with Volume 22 of DBZ and I guess all new Editions of previous volumes of Dragonball and Dragonball Z, which will now have this Logo, will be censored and dubbed down, which is just fucking great.

I have all 42 volumes of the Castilian version and DB #1 through DBZ 18 of Viz's release. The Castilian edition is unedited and has a very faithful translation to the original Japanese.
I wouldn't mind listing some differences and edits. We would need the help of others that had the original English prints, the "pre-13 and up lable" edited prints, etc... I think it might make a good addition to the already informative sections on Daizenshuu EX.

That would be a good idea. Because I just noticed that my DB Volume 4 is has the new logo. I would like to know if it'd be wise to buy the other version.Socar15 wrote:Perhaps we should compile a list of edits and changes that Viz has made to the Dragon Ball manga. The only hard part is going to be finding a correctly translated version to base it off of, or someone fluent enough in Japanese that is willing to spend the time.
