Not only is it the obvious successor to DB in terms of both fan popularity and commercial success, but the story has both greater emotional weight and a better comedic mix than DB, and a sense that it's been planned out ahead of time (with events happening earlier in the story affecting things much later in an obvious-in-hindsight kind of way). The story also includes ruminations on topics such as the nature of real justice, and what it takes to be a man, without ever feeling bogged down by it.
In addition to all that, Eiichiro Oda (the author) adores Akira Toriyama in a very fanboyish kind of way (he even has a signed Toriyama self-portrait on his wall), and the two share both a professional relationship and one as fans of each other's work. At the same time, Oda isn't showing any signs of losing interest in his own series, even after 8 and a half years of serialization. In fact, I'd say the series just reached another high point.
So... in short, I'd definitely recommend giving One Piece a shot. The manga's up to volume 9 in English, and the translation's pretty decent (though I'm keeping my fingers crossed on future volumes), but there is also a freely available web-translation that's mostly accurate, which you can use with the Japanese comics. There is no English dub of the series (the "One Piece" you might have heard of airing on Fox or Cartoon Network is some bizarro parallel universe where the series sucks in almost every way), but there are well-translated fansubs that are relatively easy to find, and far enough along that you'll be kept busy for quite a while if you decide to stick with the series.
And that's my vote!

I agree wholeheartedly SaiyaJedi. BTW, I think that SaiyaJedi is a pretty awesome dude! I should give him $500 just to show him how cool I think he is!
(
I think I just wet myself. Time to change the depends.)
PS - "One Piece" is the name of the treasure.

Allow me to note that if you highly dislike filler arcs and episodes that don't really do anything and have really boring stories, avoid the current filler arc in Naruto. >_>
I blame TV Tokyo for jumping the gun and airing too many damn one-hour specials. *cough*

One Piece (only the Japanese version of the anime and the manga, DO NOT give that shit-ass English anime adaptation a single chance).
Naruto.
Yu Yu Hakusho.
Shaman King.
Fullmetal Alchemist.
Evangelion (my favorite anime, so sue me).
Inuyasha (I'm not a fangirl, don't snipe me

).
All I can think of right now.

G-Gundam...Its a pretty good show near the end of the series, The creator of G-Gundam even said in a interview that he stole the hyper mode looks from dbz's super sayain levels.

But only the 4Kids show - that is some awesome shizzle! I mean, you get the whole "One Piece" thing explained pretty well in the theme song, yo. It could've said it two or three more times - but them's the breaks, dawg.
And that's my vote! Very Happy
Considering it hasn't been quoted until I saw it in desire's post.........I'm having the inclination it's been edited.
Well, sadly, I'm strangely never having the time to watch any anime. Really (Even DBZ...I still haven't seen all 291 eps). But I have seen a small portion of stuff, and I'd like to recommend Bleach. Great action, great comedic action (Bwahahaha, anyone?), and a cool story. Too bad I've only seen 17/68. I'd also like to recommend Beet the Vandel Buster for the same reasons somebody mentioned in this topic (Sorry for not remembering your name). I'd also mention Naruto, but it's kinda obvious...[/quote]

I had no idea. And now that you've told me, I completely see it. I have it in my mind, Trunks saying "H...Haruko-san!!" over and over again. Man, that's good.
I remember that Rukawa / Hikaru Midorikawa was #16. I think Jerseymilk told me that one... I suppose I'm just terrible at spotting these on my own.

I didn't mention it because the anime pales in compariso to its manga.
Where's the beef?

You fail for not realizing the anime and manga have totally different storylines and can't really even be compared because of that. >_>

Disey's Gargoyles. One of few North American cartoons that act as a successful go-between of North American and anime styles. It's also the best damned North American cartoon ever. Cheap box sets too, since it's domestic and they therefore don't have to pay dubbing and liscencing fees.
Record of Lodoss War: Chronicles of the Heroic Knight. That series is to Record of Lodoss War as Evil Dead II is to Evil Dead in the sense that they're both sequel-remakes. However, Chronicles of the Keroic Knight is much less "epic-like" and more geared at younger kids, so you get the
shonen feel of Dragonball. The chibis running around at the end can be funny, too.
Fatal Fury: The Fatal Fury trilogy (2 OVAs and 1 movie) is the fighter anime series that first turned me into a hardcore anime fan back before DBZ was being dubbed. It's quite literally King of Fighters as an anime, except unlike so many other video game animes, this series actually has a steady plot (which continues from OVA to OVA to movie), excellent character growth and an amount of fighting equal to that found in Dragonball. The movie also has a "Dragonball hunt" feel, since they have to prevent someone from collecting the armor of Mars, which will turn the person into a new God of War. All that said and done, please note I've only seen the dubs and have been impacted so much.
Battle Angel/Gunnm. Just see it, damn it.

I'll gladly second this. It's also my all time favourite American cartoon series. Very epic and a rich plethora of themes from ancient literature and legends. It's similar to DB in that respect.

Actually, he said that the idea came from Saint Seiya (another fighting-type series, so that might be worth considering).

Yeah, exactly,

it goes to show that Kusao can do both serious (Mirai Trunks) and hilariously quirky roles (Hanamichi Sakuragi) very well.
Midorikawa Hikaru also voiced Paikuhan in DBZ I think.

Well, Kusao Takeshi also voiced Chibi Trunks, so that shows how silly he can be.

Of course, but he goes way beyond that level in Slam Dunk as the main character - and is much hilarious.

I remember watching that when I was around four!
Let's see...
One Piece (The true successor to Dragonball; watch the Japanese version, not the shitty dub)
Naruto (Kick ass action; like Dragonball, only with ninjas)
Yu Yu Hakusho (Just switch Ki to Spirit Energy, and you got a great Dragonball-esque anime here)
I really, really need to get back into the habit of posting.

Now you're talkin'! Paypal is fine if you're on that. If not, just mail it to Japan in $100 bills.

To further the recommendation of Beet the Vandel Buster, I also recall that Kusao Takeshi of Slam Dunk & of course, DBZ voiced Rozzgoat of Beet The Vandel Buster. Yeah a lot of former seiyuus of DBZ in this one & the same goes for One Piece. Well it's not really suprising since they're both made by Toei themselves. So if your'e a fan of DBZ seiyuus like myself I'd recommend One Piece, Beet The Vandel Buster, Bleach, & Yu Yu Hakusho.

Actually, I think it's plummeted to $2.50.
