He does not see Goku as a rival; they're not competing over anything. He clearly wants to murder him very, very badly. I'd go as far as say it'd sexually satisfy him to torture Goku, as he becomes obsessed with doing so.

He wants to murder him because he, instinctively, recognizes that he is somehow different. That he somehow poses a threat to him. Hence, he recognizes him as a challenger, a rival. And the movie goes out of its way to show us clues to this, and it culminates the action by proving that Broly was absolutely right to have that instinct since Goku manages to find a way to beat him, despite being weaker, just like he managed to find a way to annoy him when they were babies despite Goku being way weaker.

I've never been one to blindly hate a character simply for an unprecedented amount of popularity. I guess I've just never understood what made Broly's character so popular in the first place... well, aside from his status as the "Legendary Super Saiyan". If nothing else, I give Toei and Funimation a lot of credit for the marketing of that term.

Out of curiosity, why do people on here hate Broly so much? I admit, he's nowhere near my favorite villain, let alone character. In fact, to me he's just meh. However, I'm just a little curious as all. Especially since the rest of the internet sees him as one of the best characters in the series.

I don't hate him, I enjoyed movie 8, but I found 10 unnecessary, and 11 just ridiculous, and not in a good way.

A lot of my friends actually enjoy Broly. As I said, I don't hate him, but I'm more indifferent to him.

At first, when I viewed movie 8 when I was younger I was like "OMG! This guy took out Goku and his friends easily!! He's so cool!" But as time progressed I did start to see his character as less appealing or interesting. I must also admit that there has been some unneeded attention towards Broly, especially with SSJ3 Broly being in Raging Blast 1 and 2.

I saw a massive amount of hate directed towards him on this site, and I've honestly never seen that much disposition towards him before. It's a good thing the reasons are cleared up, and I actually have to admit, most of the reasons are pretty valid.

As has been said, the brunt of any given Broly venom is almost never actually against Broly, but against his superfans, though it can appear as if the two are one in the same depending on how someone phrases it.

I'll put it in a way that I think some other posters are getting at but have not said. Broly is not the problem, in fact I would argue as an experiment he was an absolute joy: he took Slug's pure, uncharacteristic brutal to another level, and is at once both every paranoid extreme of the Saiyans and just about every negative stereotype of Dragon Ball Z as a whole rolled into one and played completely straight. The problem is when you have people who act as the particularly brutish image of Dragon Ball that Broly creates is what the series is supposed to be, or is at least its undisputed highest point.

I dislike Broli because Movie 8 just really is not that good. The film has a really effective build but just falls flat when the big fight starts. It's a void of drama within minutes of starting, and the finish is neither creative not memorable in any way.

Super 13 is even stupider, but he never seems to get brought up...his power isn't maximum.

Oh believe me, don't get me started on how much less of a character Super 13 is in comparison. Broly as a character is a freakin' masterpiece compared to Super 13.

At least Broli had some personality to him and had decent backstory with him and his father. Super #13 is just Cell with no personality and charm to him. Heck both Cell and #13 absorb two cyborgs to become even a stronger form. If that's not a rehash then I don't know what that is.

He explains to Goku about how Gero's computer took on Gero's desire for revenge and so completed him, 14, and 15. And later he brags about how his S.S. Deadly Bomber attack is powerful enough to blow away half the planet (and yes, this sounds pretty underwhelming coming after Vegeta's Gallick Gun or Freeza's Death Ball). He probably says some other stuff too. It's 14 and 15 who are the quiet ones, really. Maybe Super 13 gets his muteness from them.

They gave him a southern Accent. and punched up the dialogue so it had a southern bent.

They also gave him a line about Free will that i've always found fascinating.
