I don't know what it is about Vic Mignogna and Maile Flanagan's voices, but they just drive me insane. It's especially disheartening because I
love Aaron Dismuke as Al - his voice is absolutely perfect. He
is Al to me, I can find no difference between him and Rie Kugimiya, and just hearing Al in English makes my heart leap.
Vic Mignoga's alright, pretty darn good IMO, it's just his acting in the 5-12 year old Edward scenes/episodes that grate me. A 5-12 year old should not sound like an angsty 19 year old, he should sound like...Aaron Dismuke's portrayal of Al, or at the very least a pretty damn good female VA. When it's Edward 14 and up, he's practically perfect in my book. But hell...it grates at me so much, I'd have preferred Stephanie Nadolny in those prepubescent moments. >_>
Damn, not a FMA thread or forum, sorry!
Anywho, about these dubs. One Piece...what can be said, I can't even call this a dub, just an extremely crappy adaptation of a continuing piece of art. It wasn't just about Fox standards, 4Kids made the most ridiculous paint edits that were in no way needed, dialogue and even character background alterations were insanely atrocious, and.....32 EPISODES worth, including entire arcs and whatnot, were cut/merged just to get to Chopper.....And I won't even dare to bother with the voices. Needless to say, if I even glimpse this "adaptation", I cringe like I'm having a seizure. Did I mention the on-going-on-going "music" that makes DBZ season 3 look like a masterpiece?....*seizures!!*
Regarding Naruto, Viz has done an astounding job with it. One small thing that gripes me is that retarded catch phrase ShoPro felt they
had to give Naruto. I'm actually thinking of playing a "Believe it!" drinking game next time there's a marathon (shot for each time it's blurted, must not die from alcohol poisoning). But I must say, the Naruto dub has some very talented VAs at the helm as well, almost none of which I have issues with. Another small irritating aspect to me, though, is ShoPro/Viz's marketing strategy. I mean, while it's insanely smart on their part, their edit singles cost overall more than the Uncut releases and hence there is NO reason to buy them; why keep releasing them? And I'm also pining for a Ps2 game with optional Japanese VAs (c'mon, three DBZ releases have done it, one of which was a PsP game!). But hell, in the long-run, Naruto's dub kicks ass and is nicely on par to the likes of FMA, original DB, Evangelion, among others. Side note: that theme song....."Rise for some Salt", or whatever the hell it's called, is the only thing in Naruto that absolutely annoys me to no end. Rock the Dragon and even the Yu-Gi-Oh! dub themes are better than this, it's not quite as bad as the GT or OP openings, but it's awful enough to cause a cringe or two. >>;;
DBZ...Well, FUNi have definitely improved over the years. Their original DB dub was certainly leaps and bounds ahead of DBZ (and damn straight GT, too). The dub for DBZ, eh, it's always been quite literally sub-par. Even when FUNi went ahead with the 67 episode redub, they had the golden opportunity to maintain the original music, which would've perfectly matched the accurate-improved dialogue through out. Did they take it, nope, and they didn't even bother to keep a music continuity to the rest of the dub. Going back to the days of the old Ocean dub, it basically was in a similar situation as One Piece: stuck in syndication having to live up to abnormal standards. But hey, considering it was FUNi's very first dub (following the original go with DB's first 13 eps), along with the standards-and-practices issue (as well as Saban's pressure), they didn't do so bad. They had professional VAs in form of the Ocean Group (with basically 2 or 3 characters that just weren't right), made digital paint edits only where necessary (as well as some pretty damn creative incidents), and only cut what they feared soccer moms and Saban would hound Ft. Worth for. In comparison to the One Piece adaptation, it was a fucking perfect dub! ..... Need I bring GT's dub treatment into the picture?
