Fat Buu versus Mr. Buu?

Discussion, generally of an in-universe nature, regarding any aspect of the franchise (including movies, spin-offs, etc.) such as: techniques, character relationships, internal back-history, its universe, and more.

"Djinn" is a valid translation of "majin", "Vegetto" wouldn't have made much sense (the problem was the way they had spelled "kakarotto" way earlier), and as for "Hercules"... well, blame religion.
Oliver, they could've gone with simply Demon Buu rather than "Djinn", considering "Djinn" in itself is more a term for "genie", and Buu is no genie (not counting the times he serves Babidi if you wanna bring that up). As "Majin" indicates, he's a demon. And Vegetto "not making sense" didn't stop FUNi or the Canadian/UK Ocean dub from using it in their versions...Viz going with that idiotic Vegerat spelling, needless to say they're the only company on Earth to use that type of "translation". Regarding their use of "Her-cule", no comment.

Djinn isn't a terrible translation, but it's just unnecessary -and a bit ackward. Don't they exaplin what "Djinn" means before every volume? They could have done that with "Ma-jin" too. Plus, there's all those "M"s.

Well, not everything. There's a few other stuff here and there I didn't bring up. Someone should make a comprehensive list of the edits and changes someday...
Me and Tsukento actually did that in a thread once...I just have no idea where it is anymore. I have not helped at all.

I'm just going to say my intent was not to "slam" Viz, but rather just to point out some facts(I'm assuming your post was not directed at me, but I just wanted to make sure my intent was clear).

That's a good point to add, Conan. The 'Majin'(魔人) in Buu's name is defined as a demonic person or demon. The only time I've ever read 'majin' defined as a genie, it was written as '魔神', where the second character is the symbol meaning 'god'. I've always thought this meant that part of the pun in Majin Buu's name and character is because the two terms are homophones, thereby explaining Buu's genie-like traits(the Arabic clothing, the morphing into smoke, etc.)

While "Djinn" works if Viz simply based the translation off of Buu's character design, I don't believe the character was actually intended to be anything other than a demon.

Mmm... new signature-quote.
I, too, have not helped.
