Hate to break it to you but neither of them sound like a name.

I could say that about MOST names in Dragonball.

I'm just saying that some people would prefer to write Tien instead of Ten or Tenshinhan because it SOUNDS like it COULD be a name.

I'm almost CERTAIN that Chaotzu refers to Tenshinhan as "Ten" without an honorific in an episode of the "King Piccolo Part 1" set. "Son Goku - Anger Explosion!!", as Simmons translates it. During the scene where Tenshinhan is getting the Dragon Ball from a past victim, and the armed forces show up, Chaotzu says "T-Ten!" There *may" be a "-san" on there, but it definitely sounds more like a stutter to me, and Simmons seems to always puts the honorifics in the subs.

"Ten" is indeed used a good couple times through the series.

(speaking of which... has Goku ever been called "Son-san"? Everyone who refers to him by his family name use no suffix, apart from Bulma, who uses kun.)

Remeber that Clyde Mandelin did the DB sets, not Daimao.

Checking the episode now to see if there is or is not a -san there...

EDIT: Yup, Chaozu does indeed say simply "Ten" (stuttered, as you said) in the episode, and it's translated appropriately as "T-Ten..."

While I certainly would say "Hercule" falls under this idea, "Tien" does not. At worst, it looks like a typo, or a bad romanization attempt. At best, as it is for the majority of Daizenshuu EX posters and visitors, and it is a well-known and commonly-used name change used by the majority of english-speaking terroritories.

The argument is a GREAT one for putting up a word filter for Li Shenron, though.

I may be in the minority, but I think Hercule fits Mr. Satan's character more than his original name.

Hercule implies that he has a big ego and thinks hes the best at everything, while Mr. Satan is, ya know, just a name.


As for the filter, it isn't something I'd agree with, no matter what word.

For some people, Tenshinhan isn't as pronounceable as Tien Shinhan and Ten is a number, not a name, while Tien sounds like a name.

So what if its something Funimation screwed up
At least its not as horrible as the crap Harmony Gold dub did.

I believe once, by Trunks, when they first meet. Ever after, it was "Goku-san" though.
