And anyway, they did change Spidey's backstory. They changed it a hell of a lot from the original comics. They even eliminated one of the biggest moments in Spidey history - the death of Gwen Stacy.

Yamcha: Do you remember the spell to release him - do you know all the words?
Bulma: Of course! I'm not gonna pull a Frieza and screw it up!
Master Roshi: Bulma, I think Frieza failed because he wore too many clothes!

Yet despite the alterations, Spider-Man turned out to be an awesome movie all it's own. I'm expecting the same deal with DragonBall.

With the Dragon Ball movie, they're changing Goku's entire backstory.
Manga/anime backstory: Alien kid sent to Earth, grows up with Grandpa Gohan.
Movie backstory: Alien kid sent to Earth, grows up with Grandpa Gohan.
Yep, totally different.
Peter didn't know who MJ was until long after he was Spider-man.who has a crush on Mary-Jane
Except said thug didn't actually kill Ben~after his uncle Ben is killed by a thug that he allowed to get away.
No, they're not. They're changing the setting where the story starts. That is all. Why can't people seem to grasp this? The change is no different than if, say, Peter Park were to have been at a museum being bit by a genetically enegineered spider, instead of a science demonstration being bit by a radioactive spider. A changing starting point doesn't change anything but the starting point. With this, they're changing Goku's entire story.
No, that's why people without any immagination or closed minded view of 'the manga/anime is the only thing that can be called Dragonball because I love those things and if anyone changes them it automatically sucks because only Dragonball as originally envisioned and presented can be any good and anything else horrible even if it doesn't exist yet'.That's why actual Dragon Ball fans don't like what they're doing with the movie.
Now, I'm not saying that those here on the board (or elsewhere) against the movie aren't 'actual Dragonball fans'. (What the hell is with that sentence anyway?) I'm just presenting the overwhelming mindset I see from those who are against the movie.
I mean, fine, don't like the movie because you think Chatwin will suck as Goku (even I'm a bit iffy on that choice). Don't like the movie because you're not a fan of Marsters or Fat (say what?) but don't go bashing the movie because it's not your Dragonball. God forbid anyone ever changes anything you like.
Me? I am an 'actual Dragonball fan' (whatever the hell that means) too, and I'm all for the movie. In fact, I like the changes. I like the fact it's not the same damned thing again. The very thing everyone has been complaining about with the video games. I've seen the original Piccolo arc before. I'm glad this is something different. Something new. Something unique. Could it turn out bad? Sure. Will I likely enjoy it anyway? Absolutely.
No, it's not Dragonball as you know it, but that doesn't mean it's not Dragonball.
Exactly.SSj Kaboom wrote:Yet despite the alterations, Spider-Man turned out to be an awesome movie all it's own. I'm expecting the same deal with DragonBall.
Now, could we please turn this topic away from the movie before it gets locked?

Well, Xyex, you think you're simplifying the story it a wee bit too much?
You could simplify it further as 'protagonist defeats antagonist'. Hey, the moie will probably be like that too - they're so close!
They are changing a lot of Goku's story. If you don't have a problem with that, fine, but don't try and make the movie out to be a shiny example of a live-action-transition.
Goku grows up alone in the mountains, and goes on adventure with a young girl to find mytical items.
Does the movie use this as Goku's origin? No? Then it's RADICALLY DIFFERENT.

18 year old manga/anime Goku: Knows all about the world, has a few friends.

I mean, last I checked, when Goku was 18 he wasn't still living out in the mountains, all on his own, going fishing naked and using his tail as bait. I never said the movie was 'shiny example of a live-action-transition'. I'm just not over reacting over what is, in actuality, a minor change. The only real change is that he's in school.
And so what? Is he an A+ student that knows the ins-and-outs of quantam mechanics and has no idea how to fight? No. He's a martial arts student who just happens to be enrolled in a highschool. Big. Deal. Hell, for all we know they'll spend all of 10 minutes in or around the highschool and then it'll be completely forgotten.

Agreed. That's the basic premise of his character - a Saiyan child who unknowingly killed his adoptive grandfather grows up in the mountains. In this, Goku is a socially inept teenager in high school. Hell, he never was even attracted to Chi-Chi. He just married her so he wouldn't hurt her feelings. While Spider-Man changed the times when Peter met certain people and did certain things, his basic story was the same. Imagine if they decided to change him into a 35 year old chain smoker who got bit by a radioactive spider?
Yamcha: Do you remember the spell to release him - do you know all the words?
Bulma: Of course! I'm not gonna pull a Frieza and screw it up!
Master Roshi: Bulma, I think Frieza failed because he wore too many clothes!

Godammit, that was too easy to misunderstand. I meant Goku is a social outcast in High School. Who happens to still live with his grandfather even though he was supposed to have unknowingly trampled him to death when he was a kid.Rocketman wrote:That's not equivalent. This is Dragon Ball, not Spider-Man. You can't expect American cinema to really give the same treatment to a Japanese comic book as it would to one of its own cultural icons. I'm actually surprised they're keeping as much of the original story intact as it looks like they are, given how I would have guessed a Hollywood film adaption to go.jjgp1112 wrote: With this, they're changing Goku's entire story. Imagine if they did that with Peter Parker? What if they changed his entire backstory? There would be almost universal outrage from the fans.

Again, repeat after me. This is a movie. This isn't the manga. We already know things get changed for movies. Hell, Japan did it with the first three DB movies. Last I checked the Chaotzu in the manga wasn't an Emperor of anywhere.jjgp1112 wrote:Godammit, that was too easy to misunderstand. I meant Goku is a social outcast in High School. Goku accidently killing Gohan isn't some major important defining moment. When he finally finds out he just pushes it aside and then promptly forgets about it. So him being around and getting killed by Piccolo's men isn't an issue, and it adds some easy emotion to the movie.
And based on the little blurb we have about Goku for the movie I wouldn't go as far as to call him an outcast. He's just not one of the popular kids. It's not hard to be neither an outcast nor popular.

I'm not entirely sure if I'll like the live Dragon Ball movie because I actually don't like any of the Dragon Ball movies (except for the 10th anniversary special).
But I have to admit, it will be interesting to see a live action take on it. But if you think about it, Dragon Ball is too abstract and cartoony to be made into a decent live action movie. I just think that the slated actors are looking pretty dull right now. I can't help but keep thinking that Piccolo needs to be played by a black actor in order to make him the coolest he can be. Imagine Micheal Clark Duncan as Piccolo, that would be awesome!
