It doesn't have to be panel-for-panel. Nobody in their right mind is asking for that. We're asking for a Goku who cares about food more than girls, isn't accustomed to other human social norms and modern technology. We're asking for Bulma instead of Lara Croft. We're asking for Yamcha instead of some middle-aged guy with a ghetto Batmobile truck. We're asking for stuff like that. Were asking for a Chi-Chi who has a crush on an oblivious Goku and not mutual feelings that are interrupted by Piccolo's evil.

Other than that, fine. Goku meets Bulma. They search for the Dragonballs. They meet Muten Roshi. Goku learns the Kamehameha. There's also a major villain searching for the Dragonballs. The good guys and villains cross paths at least a couple times with the last encounter being a big fight at the end. Shenlong is summoned and Goku selflessly wishes to right some major wrong made along the way. That's great! Maybe next time he can fight aliens from outer space and we'll get to see the Afterlife in live action.

So, it's not the overall story that's bothering a lot of people. It works. Especially since it's a Dragonball movie, of which the current four are known for alternate takes on events that happened in the manga. It's the characterization. It just feels off.

Chrono Trigger wrote:Why can't people accept that this isn't going to be a panel for panel adaption of the manga? I can see why people aren't happy about the LOOK of the movie but the story? It's just a story based on Dragon Ball! They change things around in other adaptions all the time. Frodo was never that whiny in the books, Peter Parker really wasn't that much of a nerd after he got his powers, Eddie Brock never dated Gwen Stacy!, Gimli was never really that funny in the books, and Optimus Prime never had flames painted on him. I just don't understand what the big deal is.
I like all of that stuff though. In the X-men movies they never wore the costumes they had in comics and most of the ages were wrong but that didn't stop me from enjoying the movie! Venom refered to himself as "We" and he didn't have the long tongue but it didn't drive me up the wall! Those Elves never showed up at Helm's Deep to help out in the books but I still loved the Lord of the Rings!
So, it's only alright to voice disagreement with film adaptations if you voice all of them? Great, 'cause I hated all of that shit.

The Spider-Man movies sucked, the XMen movies sucked, the Batman movies sucked, the Superman movies sucked. (Some less than others, but none of them are great.)

And all non-original film stories have changes, no one's saying 'changes in and of themselves are bad' - we're saying 'these changes are stupid and pointless and make the story less like Dragon Ball. Let's take that scene from Fellowship of the Ring, righyt at the end where there's the Gandalf voiceover. Didn't happen in the book, but didn't feel out of place, and in no way detracted from the characters as they were originally written. Frodo being whiny? Yeah, that sucked - and we have every right to say so.
Chrono Trigger wrote:I just don't understand why people have to be so unforgivably precise about movies! Their just movies! For people to be so anal about this stuff makes me wonder how they ever got into Dragon Ball or Anime or ANY form of entertainment!
We got into Dragon Ball because it was an entertaining original story. Sure it was based on Journey to the West, but it never claimed to be that story. 'Dragon Ball Evolution' is claiming to be Dragon Ball, and so far it doesn't seem like it will be anything like the Dragon Ball we know.

...

The recent X-Men and Batman movies were great.... how can you not like them? I'm sorry, I know you're allowed to have an opinion, but to hate every single one? WTF. Then yes you will hate this movie. But I don't really care, since you obviously can't be pleased by any American adaptation.

Probably the same way I'm wondering how anyone could have liked The Forbidden Kingdom in a non-ironic way.

Once again, you do not hold the sole correct opinion on movies.

They never claimed it was Dragon Ball. It's an adaptation. It's based on the story of Dragon Ball. It's not Dragon Ball as you know it but Dragon Ball as they're telling it. I'm not saying people can't disagree or have their own opinions. I'm just wondering why people can't understand that it's an adaptation and TRY to enjoy it for what it is instead of hating on it for what it's not. They're not trying to destroy the manga or the anime or Dragon Ball. They're just making a movie to make a quick buck (just like every other company) and that's it. The characters in the Lord of the Rings movies weren't exactly they way they were in the book but it was still Lord of the Rings. Yeah Goku likes Chi-Chi and he goes to High School but he still meets Bulma and they search for Dragon Balls. Sounds like Dragon Ball to me.

That reminds me of a particular quote...

I remember when he said that. That was one of the funniest lines ever.

I just couldn't think of a good reason to justify someone eating pudding that had been sodomized. So I went with my analogy instead.

No it's more like someone being used to eating a scoop of strawberry ice cream all the time but one day someone asks them to try some uh...I don't know...Rainbow sherbert instead and the person is like "No I don't want that because that's not MY ice cream that I'M used to."

Well, either toning it down a little or just saying "Sorry, can't tell you that". I don't think a majority of the people here really care about spoilers. :P

Since other people read this forum I wanted to make it clear I am not ever telling some major spoilers that I feel could potentially ruin the entire film if you knew it. I wasn't even replying personally to that persons post, I was replying to everyone who might have that question. So maybe it appeared rude but I wasn't trying to be.

No. I'm pretty sure I know my own opinion and why. I don't really need someone else trying to tell me what it is or why it's that way.

I want to see Dragonball. Instead we are getting Dragonball Evolution. Therefore, I will not go see it. The end.

I will agree that X-Men 1 and 3 weren't very good, and Superman Returns was bad. Batman Forever and Batman and Robin were horse shit, and Spiderman three had some problems. But to Say Spiderman 1 and 2, X-men 2, Batman(1, returns, begins, and the dark knight) Sucked is absolutely ludicrous as all of them pulled good reviews from critics and fans alike. They are all great movies, you sir have bad taste.

And Mike, why did you hate Forbidden Kingdom so much? please explain.

Sorry. I just came up with this nice, detailed explanation with analogies and everything and your reply came off as, "No. It's this way." So, sorry if I came off as an asshole.

Jesus Christ, seriously? You lose. The name of the movie is fucking "Dragon Ball". Explain how they aren't claiming it's Dragon Ball, when they call it "Dragon Ball".

Yes, things in LOTR were changed, but not so much that it failed to capture the spirit of the books. They changed only a few character traits (not even 'changed' really, Frodo's whiny but not that whiny) and unimportant plot points.

It does? Really? Describe Goku's personality and see how often 'educated', 'unemotional', 'hesitant to act', or 'shows interest in females' comes up. Go ahead, try it.

Uh, I have a question for Jappo. If that's still okay... o_O

In the trailer, we see "ChiChi" shoot a person. Is this Goku? If so, will the bullet do any damage?

Thanks.. xD
