The guy grinned big and said, "Yes, Evangelion is a fantastic anime, you had me going there for a second with that Dragonball stupidness. We can talk about all the plot intracacies of Eva when you come to..."
About this time I slid open the closet and my two DVD racks full of Dragonball and Z DVDs. I said, "Well my man, Dragonball is greater than Eva in my book. Akira is awesome. He rarely posts but when he does it's usually really insightful. In this case it was more inspiring (or should I say satisfying?). I'm glad he didn't back down and let that guy walk all over him.

Fans of Funimations original dub and their refusal to acknowledge that Dragonball is Japanese in origin.

The Japanese version being called the "Japanese dub". You don't refer to a show in its original language as a dub. That term is reserved for when said show is dubbed in other languages. Production methods are irrelevant.

I'd like to know why, as well.Insertclevername wrote:Why? It's his...name.LeprikanGT wrote:"Son Goku".

It reminds me when people will shout out "Over 9000!" in public. I feel like that thing is the only thing that most people in the general public knows about DBZ. Technically, Anime is is animated then the VAs fit their lines in with it so calling it a dub isn't too far from the truth.jpdbzrulz4sure wrote:The Japanese version being called the "Japanese dub". Funny thing is most anime are aimed at children/teens and lonely adults, are low-budget, and have "stupid" premises (not trying to provoke, not trying to provoke).ringworm128 wrote:IMO Akira has the best view on the whole high and mighty anime fans bashing you for liking DB.Akira wrote:Senior year of college I met a friend of a friend who saw I had some anime DVDs in my dorm room and kept after me to join his anime club on campus. Also, I hate the "real" anime falsehood placing when anime is just a term the Japanese use for all regions of animation, and we only call Japanese cartoons "anime" to differentiate the styles.

I know how it's done in Japan.matt0044 wrote:Technically, Anime is is animated then the VAs fit their lines in with it so calling it a dub isn't too far from the truth.
In terms of foreign media, calling something a "dub" implies that the original voice track that's in one language is replaced with a new one in another language for localization in a country that speaks that language. The Japanese version of Dragon Ball does not fit that category.

I hate it when people say that the Falcouner soundtrack is much better than KAI's soundtrack. (Well i guess this is kind of old since the soundtrack changed)
I also hate it when people say that the Original DBZ Japanese soundtrack is better than the Falcouner soundtrack.

In your mind, Kai > Faulconer > Original Japanese soundtrack, so therefore, you hate hearing any opinions shared to the contrary?
"Almost everyone in Goku's family"? You make it sound like twenty people.ringworm128 wrote:People bashing Sabat for having so many roles then praising Nozawa for voicing almost everyone in Goku's family and Tullece.
Throughout the entire series of Dragon Ball, the only character Nozawa does the voice for is Goku.
Throughout most of Dragon Ball Z, she does Goku and Gohan. She did Bardock very sparsely throughout the series, and Tullece once. Through one arc, she did Goten as well.
Sabat did... gotta find a source: Vegeta, Yamcha, Piccolo, Kami, Butta, Jheese, Recoom, Karin, Mr. Popo, Saichoro, and Gyu-Mao, none of which are related (except Piccolo and Kami, but meh...) all of these characters appearing simultaneously at one point.
There is no comparison between the Nozawa and Sabat situations.

Re: Dragon Ball things you never want to hear again
I do get somewhat tired of the hate for Dragon Ball Evolution sometimes. Yeah it's a bad movie, but you can't expect that much out of it since it was going to suck no matter what. The trailer and TV spots for the movie looked awful and I don't think anyone had any hopes for it being good. It's not like the movie was like Star Wars Episode I or Godzilla (1998) was were the movie had a lot of hype and people were hoping it to be good until the movie turn out to be a good let down. I personally rather watch DBE over DBZ Movie 2, Movie 11 and most of GT.

Well, I'd watch it over the Black Star arc of GT I can say that much. Just thinking about that makes me weep for my beloved Dragon Ball.

DBE to me was just another bad film. I can get enjoyment out of it for being so bad. At least it didn't put me to asleep like DBZ Movie 2 did. You can pull off a good MTS3K type of event if you have a group of friends watching it with you.

Re: Dragon Ball things you never want to hear again
I dunno, I'd argue that there is honestly. Sure, Sabat plays a lot more characters all at once (or did rather), but each voice was pretty well separated from the other. There's no argument (from me at least) that Nozawa was the far better actor, but as far as differentiating the voices from one another? Even back then, Sabat was managing that better honestly. Not that I'm saying Nozawa doesn't differentiate, but it's not to the same degree.Thanos wrote:There is no comparison between the Nozawa and Sabat situations.
To be completely fair though, I dislike the Sabat situation in the original dub too. So I'm kind of on both sides here.
I still think Dragon Ball can be done well in live action, with some minor changes, but what we got wasn't anywhere near the right approach. I do think it had some good in it though - they kept Roshi more perverted than I honestly expected them too. Chatku's suggestion during the phonebook scene was great. Marsters wasn't a completely terrible Piccolo (you know, all five minutes of the film that he's in...), and the soundtrack was great too. Beyond that though, there's absolutely nothing in the animated realm of DB that I'd rank lower than Evolution.Hellspawn28 wrote:I do get somewhat tired of the hate for Dragon Ball Evolution sometimes. ...Okay, maybe the Bulma and the crabs episode. Maybe.
And honestly, I've never understood the hate for Episode I of Star Wars. I'm in an odd position there though, I like the original trilogy the best, but I think the best 'single' film of them all is Episode III, and Jar Jar Binks is my favorite character. *shrugs* And for Godzilla (1998), I think it's a decent enough movie on it's own...but a terrible Godzilla movie. Kind of the same way I feel about Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within really.
