@DemonRin
his name isn't Mark Satan, just Mark. Mr.Satan is just his ring nameYay!! Reading is Fun!!DemonRin wrote:And I know Mr. Satan is apparently his Stage name, and Mark is his real name, I was trying to include both when I said that.![]()
Anyway, I see Her-cule in DBZ the same way I see Roronoa Zolo in One Piece. It's NOT the character's name, and it reminds me of the terrible dub.
It's Mr. Satan and Roronoa Zoro.
Why so much hatred towards this name?

I understand why they changed the name from their POV even if I don't care for it. I do find it amusing however that said conservative parents would have been totally fine with how many hundreds of episodes of violence and genocide and magic but this one idiot named Satan would just make things completely unacceptable.

Toriyama revealed that Mister Satan's real name was "Mark" in his Q&A in the recently released Super Exciting Guide-Character Volume. There's no division between family and personal names in the gerion he's from, so his real name is simply "Mark" (and not "Mark Satan" or any such thing).Casual Matt wrote:So where did this whole Mark thing come from?

Maybe i'm the only one but i like the name Her-cule, it's only a stage name anyway.
Same goes for Naruto, little kids killing each other is fine but showing a kid smoking is unacceptable. (not that i'm a smoker btw). I do find it amusing however that said conservative parents would have been totally fine with how many hundreds of episodes of violence and genocide and magic but this one idiot named Satan would just make things completely unacceptable.

Especially because what I've heard tells me that said smoking is sort of an important plot point for the character, not some off the bat "lol, smoking is so cool" thing. It's important for the character and taking it away shallows the whole point. (I get my Naruto information secondhand from a Shikamaru fangirl so my info may be overstated, as a note)

I really don't see the point in complaining about it considering the fact that all you have to do to avoid the Hercule name is by just avoiding the edited dub and only watching the uncut version.

"Mr. Satan" to "Hercule" was probably the very least offensive of the dub censorship changes to me.
I mean, COME ON. There are crowds screaming "Satan! Satan! Satan!". It's kinda creepy in a society with strong Judeo-Christian western ideologies evident in the culture.
And besides, other than the name, he is quite likely the best represented of the speaking characters in the dub.
I'm probably in the minority though - I consider the Detective Conan name changes to be completely acceptable. =p

I certainly understand the reason for changing his name (after Mister Satan helps Goku complete the Super Genki Dama, Goku says "Well done Satan! You might just be the Earth's true savior!"; talk about a line upsetting to any thin-skinned Christians), but what I and I think most other people have a problem with is that the particular solution that Funi and subsequently Viz (and the French dub first of all) went with was rather dumb. If the name needed to be changed, I think they should have at least tried for something closer to his original name, like Mister Saturn or Mister Savage or some such thing.Super Ghost Kamikaze wrote:"Mr. Satan" to "Mr. Satan" was probably the very least offensive of the dub censorship changes to me.

As much as I don't like the reasoning for the name change I can still accept it but did they really have to paint edit over every mention of Mr.Satan in the manga to read "Herc.ule"? If you want to call him Herc.ule fine but can we please just leave the art out of this? Would Christians really be upset over a car or a billboard that has the word "Satan" on it? If so all I can say is "oakily doakily neighboreenos!"

I personally don't think "Hercule" is all that bad for a fake-y wrestler/fighter name.Herms wrote:I certainly understand the reason for changing his name (after Mister Satan helps Goku complete the Super Genki Dama, Goku says "Well done Satan! The REAL annoyance, to me, was the use of "Hercule Satan" as his name in the "uncut" dub, as though that was his "real" name rather than a ring name.
Somehow, Mr. Savage just sounds stupid to me, and Mr. Saturn sounds like he's trying to be a bad 70s super hero, really. But I suppose there's no universal scale of quality when it comes to such things.

Although in chapter 396 (DBZ 202), during one of the shots of Satan's fans watching him at the Cell Games, if you look really, really closely, you can see one guy with a "Mr. Satan" shirt that Viz didn't edit (the shirt even almost kind of looks like it says "Mr. Saturn").

Honestly, I can't imagine why people would hate the name H-ercule so much, though I do see both sides of the argument.
Funimation really had no right to go in and change the character's name, since it's not their work (yes, I know they hold the LEGAL rights to it in the USA, but Funimation didn't write Dragon Ball. Toriyama did). They shouldn't be pandering to "soccer moms" and the like; their job is to create and true and accurate translation.
But everytime the dreaded H-word comes up, that's not what people say. They just go on about how H-ercule is a stupid name and Mr. Satan is so much more fitting. What? Honestly, H-ercule is a much better and fitting name for the character. "YEAH!!! I am the World Champion!! I am the strongest in the world!!!!! My entire character's personality will revolve around this very false statement!!!! YEAH!!!!!" Yeah, I think H-ercule is a much more fitting name for the character than Mr. Satan--and that's taking the account the name pun he shares with Videl. Yes, I KNOW Mr. Satan is his original name created by Toriyama, but even after all this time (and I'm getting more and more attached to the Japanese version to the point where Masako Nozawa's Kamehameha Wave sounds more natural to me than Sean Schemmel's), but even at this point calling him Mr. Satan to me is like calling Goku "Bob". I don't see how "Mr. Satan" is a better and more fitting name for that character.
People go on about how if Funimaton HAD to change the name, then they should have changed it to Mr. Savage or Mr. Saturn or something. Those are ridiculous and dumber than either Mr. Satan or H-ercule could ever be (if you are of the belief that either Mr. Satan or H-ercule are dumb names). At least they changed the name to something that actually fits the character.

How is "Hercule" a more fitting name? Hercules and Mister Satan don't have much of anything in common.

If VenomSymbiote's research about Hercules (or H-ercules, just in case the name filters assault the half-God) is accurate, then they have almost everything in common (minus the 'fro, I'm sure).Herms wrote:How is "Hercule" a more fitting name? "Her.cule" didn't bother me for the TV broadcasts. It's TV. The DVDs have the true name on them.
What does bother me is that they put "Her.cule" on all of the video games, even though those are T-rated and have nothing else edited or changed. Especially when FUNi actually did a decent job dubbing the games. They even have cursing and mention Hell in the games, but putting a censored name on it, kind of sours the experience a bit.
Truly annoying...

Personally, I hate the aforementioned* name because, above all else, it's just a stupid-sounding name, plain and simple. Who thought of that anyways? ("Hey, let's just take the s off of Hercules and that can be our new name for Mr. Satan!" ... "Okay, sure...")
But I also think Mr. Satan is a stupid character, so whatever. No offense to any Mr. Satan fans.
*PS, I just now realized what this "name filter" is for the first time when I tried to type the H word here.
Ha, that's fucking awesome.
