Well, there was the whole thing where he gave Cell a Senzu. That wasn't exactly genius at work.

I always thought the idea behind that was to make sure that when Cell was defeated there was no doubt that Gohan was the strongest.

That was the point, it was also meant to intimidate Cell. In addition to Goku having a strong sense of fair play.
