Sebastian (SB) wrote:Yeah, PSM is an independent magazine that generally has different reviewers that seem to have different opinions. I think Budokai 3 didn't get such a decent review because the person who did the review was not the same guy who did the review for the past 2 games. I think he was more of a newcomer to the Budokai series of games & he hasn't generally played the past 2 games well enough to appreciate the 3rd one & I'm also assuming he's not generally a fan from what I've read of his article.
Not playing the first two games isn't the problem - it's that he has a preconcieved notion of what he wants, a hardcore traditional fighting game; and hat he doesn't want, DragonBall.
It's like reasing a movie review: I don't always agree with what Ebert says, but he won't just say 'it's based on an anime, and it shows'. Ebert, as would any reputable revierer, gives reasons why he liked this, and didn't like that.
The guy doing these reviews is a jackass - 'and it shows'.

6/10 isn't so bad. After all that does equal, 60% which is above average. However to many magazines use 70% + to symbolise this, which is why (although I don't buy it) I like the magazine Edge - to them 5/10 means average.
As for the DBZ reviews, to me I don't quite see the point in getting non anime fans to review the games. It would be like asking me to review the Halo series. I can't stand first person shooters and generally think Halo is over hyped, so somehow I doubt I'd give it a fair chance. In my humble opinion the person who reviewed Shin Budokai (and generally gave it a fair chance) should be the one to review DBZ games.

5/10 means a game is crap to the reviewer. Think of it like a school grade. If you got a 7, that's like a C, so it's ok. THAT'S average. If you get a 6 or below, it is a failing grade, or in game review terms, you think the game sucked.

Grades and reviews are totally different. In a review (game, movie, whatever), a 5/10 would basically mean not bad, but not good either. Just so-so. I could easily give a game 5 or 6 out of 10 but by no means would that necessarily mean it's bad or sucks.

Never look at grades. Read why they don't like it. That way you can see why they think it is bad and you can decide "Whould this bother me?".
But of course, you need a good reviewer for that...

It is a shame more magazines don't think that way (in my opinion anyway).

Same here.
Anyway, hopefully the next time I post here my copy should have arrived so I'll be able to post my comments, but I'm looking forward to it. Sparking's lack of any real depth really disspointed me, hence why I'm not overly sold by the idea of a sequal.

Finally found the EU version in the stores ^_^ Played it for an hour now and really loving it. I just started the game up w/o looking at the controls and fought my little brother and it has been a long time since we had such fun (actually, it was yesterday with Smash Bros. Melee, but still

). Now *just* to unlock everything.
And as it looks like for me at the moment, Budokai might be the series that imitates the (anime) series the best, but SDBZ plays a *lot* better and is just a lot more fun (and less watching Dragon Rushes or way to long Ultimates).

Got it today.^^ I was really surprised to find it in the huge super market for 30€! oO
I have no PS2, but my girlfriend lent me her console for...as long I want. I LOVE HER!!!
Don't know whether the EU version has the original BGM or Budokai tracks, because I don't know the Budokai BGM. But at least there is no Head-Cha-La in the wannabe-opening. And yeah, the PAL version got the Japanese voices.
A little bit confusing is though that in the credits Chris Sabbat is mentioned as "Producer". oO

I like that Cha-La Head Cha-La opening!
I hope the Japanese voices are in the American version as well.

In my opinion an average epic song like in the Budokai Tenkaichi opening. Maybe it's the same (I didn't play BT so I can't say it for sure).

I knew it was going to happen, but I hate that the opening for Super DBZ in America is going to be some crappy instrumental music that totally changes the tone of the opening from "ZOMG, DRAGONBALL (nolstalgia kicks in)" to "ROAR GWAR MEIN DRAGONBALLZ IZ BIGGUR TEHN YURZ!!!111 (guitar) NANANANANANANANAAAAWARWWAAAAAEEENNNGGGGNANANANA!!!11" or something dumb like that.

Well, I walked into town on friday and picked up a copy (for the measely sum of £25) on an "errand" for my brother. Needless to say I was already dilligently working my way through the stages when he had returned from school, so despite the complaints I was still happy.
Okay, thoughts.
This game upon immediate encounter strikes me as somewhat of a disapointment, perhaps because I was following the mind-set image of Sparking! as my template for future games. However, the realisation eventually set in that this is an arcade game - meant for, uh, arcades. Thinking in this light however does change my views.
Super Dragonball Z gave me a nostalgic kick that I don't think I have had since I was forced to play Dead Or Alive 2 at one of my ex girlfriends houses. Sure, I found the some of the graphical potrayal annoying and below par but for the money I spent (well, my brother spent) on this game I'd say it was a well worth investment.
