DragonBall Arena has some nice-quality, audio-less video clips for AMV-making from just about every part of the series. Plenty from the movies.

I'd say Movie 8 would be a good one too... Lots of favorite characters (more than Movie 13). You got all your Saiyans, Kuririn, KameSennin, Oolong, anf of course Broli and Paragus.

Although I would have to agree on Movie 3 as well! *Dreams of being Tullece*

This will be the... 4th English dub of movie 3. XD Seriously, unless you guys have good quality microphones and recording preamps, this will sound extremely generic. Even audio post-processing can't save a bad source.

Wow, this sounds great! I'd love to do some VA work. I think I can do a fairly good Brian Drummond-esque impression of Vegeta. I'll try out some other characters, too... I might be good at Kuririn too, not sure. My voice might sound a little young (I'm 14), but I'll give it a shot. I'll need to see if my microphone quality is good enough also.

As for which movie to do... I've never actually seen movie 7 or 13, admittedly, but I'd say 13, out of those. It looks like it has a good cast characters and a good story to back it up. From what I've heard, 7 wasn't so good in comparison... Thinking about it, what about movie 9? That might be a good one to do, as it seems to have a fairly large cast of characters also (although Goku might get the short end of the stick). I also like it the best out of all the movies I've seen. :P

My god, just like in all my crazy fantasies-I mean, I'd love to help out. I'm a decent actor and I have an actual microphone so I'm sure I could work something out. Of course, I'm female so I'm up for those roles, but my voice is fairly low so I can probaby manage a child like Gohan. Damn, Gokuh would be fun though....

Oh yeah, and I vote Movie 3 as well. One of my favorites!

I have a mic and would help out,

(if there are any spaces left)

I also vote for Movie 3! Oh man just thinking back to the terrible movie dub with ''Big Green'' can any of you guys remember Goku refering to Kaiō-sama as ''Your Majesty''?

Terrible...

Funny, a few weeks ago, I had the same idea. An english DBZ fandub with you guys. That would be cool.^^ I would only dub few short clips and not an episode or an entire movie.
Why? Allow me to give my statement.^^

First of all, I was in a (or rather THE) German fandubbing group, called Crash Dub Studios (www.fandub.de), before it has gotten serious for me this year. We made a lot of dubs (most of them DBZ) and even 4 alternative dubs for OFFICIAL DVDs (Saiyuki episode 1 and 50, DBZ movie 1 and 8 ). The last DVD dub was DBZ movie 1 and it got very good feedback. In fact, most of the real fans prefer our dub over the official one.

We started 5 years ago and no one of us had real experience in dubbing or acting. Nowadays some of us are real voice actors and making radio plays, dubs for games and even animation.
So, I’ll not write crap. ;D

Sadly, my idea dissappeared, because I have a lot to do now. I just have no time for longer fan projects. And believe me, a fandub is a long project. Especially if the whole planning is going over the internet. Our best time was 5 weeks for DBZ movie 8. Our worst time was 12 months for Cheeky Angel episode 1 (my takes were 10 months old when the episode was released -_-).

Even if you have the IT (International Tape, with only sfx and bgm) from the publisher, you can’t say it will be an easy job on the mixing. We got the ITs for our DVD dubs but in spite of it we need pretty much time of those projects.

If you haven’t the IT, you must build an own. That means, put in the whole sfx, background sounds (i. e. at a coast you need the rushing of waves, seagulls etc.) and of course the bgm.
Furthermore you have to customize the different voice tracks, the volumes, effects for echoes and filters (any location sounds different, i. e. a forest, bathroom, living room or inside a castle).

Sure, it’s a FANdub, but becaus it is a fandub it will bring some trouble. The most fandubs get bad feedback, because....they are „not good“:

- Recording quality is crap
- The voices are too young and doesn’t fit the characters
- No real acting
- No real mixing

Not all of those things must be very good. I mean, it’s a fan project and nothing professional.^^ But it should be decent, otherwise the people couldn’t enjoy it enough and give very bad feedback. Even if you did put in much effort, the result could be „not good“, because there are so many factors, which are important.

I don’t want to discourage you, but beware. A good (fan)dub is A LOT of work.

In spite of it, if you need a little helper or something else, ask me.^_^

Question to those who are planning on "dropping some lines": Are you guys influencing your take on characters off of any particular dub? If so, which kind? Geez, so many projects coming out of no where in this site (dub, wiki, destroying r29).. do you think forum activity will be talked about in the podcast? Maybe with a bit more exposure, we'll have a lot more people and resources available.

Thanks for the sage advice, Timo. Nice to see someone being both wary and optomistic at the same time.

...and to put it plainly... yeah, we know it's going to end up kinda crappy. But the point of the project is to have fun and have our families give us wierd looks 'cuz we're screaming things into a microphone all day.

So far, Movie 3 has been dominating the votes. Whoa. But I'm actually liking the idea.
Mr.Piccolo wrote:Question to those who are planning on "dropping some lines": Are you guys influencing your take on characters off of any particular dub? If so, which kind?

Well, what I've test-recorded of myself thus far actually sounds rather unique, but I've gotta admit, I'm trying to emulate Sean Schemmel with my Goku. I'm just winging it with everyone else, just trying to portray them "as I've always imagined them." If you know about the character's personality and such, then you really can't go wrong that way.

I can't do Kid Gohan for crap, though. My sister, however, nailed him. I might have her record his line for the scene I'm test-dubbing.

Geez, I don't know. Come to think of it, in all (2) of the podcasts I've listened to, I've never heard any forum activity mentioned at all. Is there a reason for that?

Well I think doing the dub will be quite fun, I guess we can either do the FUNimation dub, the brilliant Magic Cloud version (sorry don't know who dubbed it... you know the guys that named the movie ''Super Battle In The World'') or we can do it properly and copy the Japanese version ( but em in english, read the subs out).

With the Wiki thing, I have joined and placed my name down. I think it's about time that got pushed a little further.

Oh and destroy Room 29? It can never be destroyed.

(EDIT: Meh Kaboom beat me too the post whilst I was looking into Super Battle In The World)

I've actually been trying some Vegeta lines myself. I don't know. I'm no Ryo Horikawa, but I think I (and others) do best when they aren't trying to emulate anyone voice. Act, but don't force it. The emotion and conviction behind the voice is more important than the voice itself.

...don't forget lip-syncing, too! If everyone insists on practicing ahead of time , then I'd suggest picking up a clip or two from DB Arena and try setting your voice to it to get a knack for the timing.

...and from the looks of at least my attempts at it... we're going to need one of our lovely female contributor's to do Gohan's (Or if by some miracle, Movie 13 is picked, Goten's and/or Trunks') voice. So it might be a good idea to practice that, as well.

Does the voting process have to be a unanimous decision? If so, ooh ooh, I want movie 4 and movie 8 because they’re too awesome. ;p

I never really thought about the lip syncing. Mabye we should do a few test runs with some of the more well know episodes or even working along with common things heard in say a budokai game.

We really shouldn’t put the jobs Kaboom suggested aside, it’s not like we’re doing a radio show or a podcast (hey maybe daizenshuu ex should make a podcast!), this is going a visual as well.
["Director"] - Someone should be in overall charge of things, and have responsibilities such as deciding on VA roles after auditions, assiging responsibilites and generally delegating things. I'm willing to do this in addition to (hopefully) VAing if nobody else minds/could do it better. I honestly don't have the equipment or expertise to do anything significant other than voice acting in any other area. In terms of picking VAs, one or two others should discuss it with the Director, so as to avoid any bias. We want to try and be fair with casting. The director would also, well, direct. He would have a script, and would coach and make suggestions to the picked VAs as they record their parts.
Well since you brought this idea up, I don't see any reason for not to be the director, unless someone with a great deal of experience in the field wants to step up.
 [Sound] - With all the CDs that various members own, I'm not worried about racking up BGM. I am worried about where to get sound effects, like explosions, energy beams, etc, and especially DBZ-specifics like "the SSj whoosh-whoosh." We might be forced to rip them from DVDs, or something. In short, someone should be in charge of gathering up the sound and making it usable. This might also apply to cleaning up the VAs' recordings. So ideally, this would be someone who knows their way around a soundboard and other such equipment. Tenken, might you be capable of this?
I have an ish load of random dragonball sound effects. *Including* robot-walking noise! ;p
 [DragonBox: The Movies Owner/Ripper] - We need to get the footage from somewhere, right? The most logical (and smexiest) source would be the DragonBox. But we would need someone who owns it to rip it at a decent quality (minus most of the audio, obviously), and make it available for use.
Mike and Corey, VegettoEX and MajinVegitaXV respectively, own dragonboxes (the only people that I can remember). Will they be in the project?
[Video Editor] - Probably one of, if not the, biggest job of all. Somebody needs to put it all together. Whoever's in charge of audio might be able to provide the Video Editor with a single, long audio track or two of some sort (I have no idea how that works, sorry). But the video editor would have the job of combing the movie footage with our "new" audio, as it is provided to him/her. The video editor would work closely with the director.
Well, there are plenty of people in the forum who are good with AMVs and stuff. Wouldn't that give someone an idea on something on video editing?
 [Writer] - Someone needs to put together a script. Oh Great Steve Simmons, if you can hear us, then would you be willing to provide us with some sort of transcript of your translations for whichever movie we decide upon? That way, the appointed writer can scribble up an English script based upon your wondrous translations.
Well, I do write..but, that's beyond the point. People who do fanfics and, of course, Steve Simmons, should be a big help in this field.
 [Voice Actors] Last but not least, our voice talent. Once a movie is decided upon, the director will be responsible for compiling a list of characters. Once that list is up, everyone should start practicing for whatever characters they believe they can do well. The director will make a sperate thead for posting audition recordings.
Download clips and practice those lines. That way it'll be easier to chose who would be right for each character. I so want to do a Samuel L. Jackson influenced character... preferably Piccolo. ><

Should start a new thread, where people post one post with the movie they want to see dubbed.

Keep it clear and simple and let it run for a few days then decide.

Oh I am so totally down for this, I have a mic and have done some amateur acting and stuff, my voice is pretty cromulent. Movie 3 would be an excellent choice due to the ensemble cast and stuff. Great, I'll definitely audition, yes.

I'd also love to do some script writing, I realize I don't have much of a post count because I have been a lurker for a couple years. I hope this doesn't immediately exempt me from participating.

I don't know about the rest of you guys but this project is giving me a greater respect for FUNi's VA and voice acting in general. It's obviously not as easy as it seems, maybe I'll give certain acts another chance... (besides kamehameha dump. That cannot be forgiven)

That's a good idea, actually. That way, we can let this one continue as a general discussion on the project. I'll go make it...

...*Thread Made!* God bless tabbed browsing!
Undercooked Sausage wrote:I'd also love to do some script writing, I realize I don't have much of a post count because I have been a lurker for a couple years. I hope this doesn't immediately exempt me from participating.
Of course not. We're gonna need all the help we can get! :D I need to go look up the word, "cromulent," though.
Mr.Piccolo wrote:I never really thought about the lip syncing. Mabye we should do a few test runs with some of the more well know episodes or even working along with common things heard in say a budokai game.
I think it'd be much easier to just have people practice with video clips on their own. We've got a while before any serious auditioning or casting happens, so there's plenty of time for practice in the meanwhile.
Mr.Piccolo wrote: Well since you brought this idea up, I don't see any reason for not to be the director, unless someone with a great deal of experience in the field wants to step up.
Missed an important word in there somewhere. Were you referring to me?
Mr.Piccolo wrote: I have an ish load of random dragonball sound effects. *Including* robot-walking noise!

I love you.

I don't think we're going to need a giant robot, but do you have things that might work for ki blasts, spirit bombs, powering up and the like? Those are what I'm worried about, since we can easily get things like wind, footseteps, falling rocks, etc. elsewhere. We might have to do some audio ripping from DVDs if all else fails.
Mr.Piccolo wrote:Mike and Corey, VegettoEX and MajinVegitaXV respectively, own dragonboxes (the only people that I can remember). Will they be in the project?
I don't know about Corey, but I don't expect Mike to get deeply involved. But if one of them was to merely rip the footage for us, then I would love them to the edge of forever's infinity.
Mr.Piccolo wrote: Well, there are plenty of people in the forum who are good with AMVs and stuff. Wouldn't that give someone an idea on something on video editing?
Yeah. It's still a lot of work, though. That might end up being a multi-person job.
Mr.Piccolo wrote: Well, I do write..but, that's beyond the point. People who do fanfics and, of course, Steve Simmons, should be a big help in this field.

I can even do some of the "English Adaptation" writing. I'm only asking of Steve to provide some sort of script for the Japanese subtitles that I'm sure he must have around somewhere, especially if he was responsible for recently subtitiling Movie 3. If he did provide us with that, then... well, see the above comments about Mike and Corey.
