I'd say that it looks like a good chunk of money was put into the movie, with all the little special effects and such. If I was to rate it as a general movie, it looks alright, but so far to me it doesn't look like it deserves to be called Dragonball.
Gohan: At least he doesn't have his sword out anymore.
Kuririn: Yeah, and your dad put his finger away too.

Which is not quite the Karate Kid cliché.Onikage725 wrote:Well he wasn't "bullied," but wasn't Gohan ribbed for being the weird kid from the sticks? I haven't watched that saga in years, but I thought Gohan kinda stuck out.
(hey, they could get Ralph Macchio for Tenshinhan!)
'Doesn't quite strike me as the "good" old Hollywood cliché either... Where are the admirers, for example? And he did get involved with the popular chick. Videl was a local celebrity, what with her dad owning the city and her running around town fighting crime.
But yeah, she's a local celebrity. All right. I guess that does make her an "It girl," in a way.
Which isn't exactly something I'm used to see in US movies. The Lara Croft stuff, on the other hand...So we've got the ass-kicking chick and the popular chick rolled into one. Hell, she even gets to henshin into Great Saiyaman 2 later.
Please don't make me quote the terrible, terrible opening lines of the teaser...We may not have a *Tolkien* prophecy... but what is the prophecy in this movie again?
They talk about legends. They don't quote ominous prophecies.Dragon Ball has plenty of cheesy fantasy stuff. We get the whole "collect the artifacts and the magic dragon will grant your wish" thing.
Er... No, I can assure you I won't go see that thing.Kid Trunks wrote:I think you can rest assured that everyone here will go see the movie. Anyone who says they won't is either lying or deluding themselves.
I might eventually see it down the line, if it's for free and I'm bored out of my mind. Just like I might eventually see Bloodrayne.

Fair enough, I didn't know it fell under that umbrella. Irregardless, the internet division doesn't necessarily dictate what the motion picture division is doing (note I'm not arguing, just making a point).JAPPO wrote:In 2005 News Corp.'s Fox Interactive Media acquired IGN Entertainment for $650 million.

Kickboxer 5 had no relation to the first on. They simpl slapped the Kickboxer name on it. Sounds like a very apt comparison to this abortion.Onikage725 wrote:Not exactly. You know, stating an opinion is one thing. Stating one as fact is another. And this is unnecessary. A crappy sequal to a series of films =/= a movie adaptation of a manga story arc that maintains some aspects of the original and deviates in other aspects.Victator Supreme wrote:Does not change the fact it has the production values if a direct to dvd Bloodsport sequal. Its pretty obvious at this point this movie will have as much to do with Dragonball as Kickboxer 5 does with Kickboxer.
This thing is not based on Dragonball. It leased the name Dragonball and slappd it on an unrelated movie. The trailer did not even bear a slight resemblence to Dragonball. Pamela Andreson has more of a resemblence to Mighty Thor. The Mystery Weekend episode of Saved by the Bell has more of a Resemblence to First Blood than this movie has to Dragonball.
The people hating on this piece of shit have been proven right at every turn. The cloest I gewt to paying for it will be when I pay the cable company for my internet connection., so I can grab the torrent.
All this because we aren't apeshit happy over this live action movie? People have the "right" to express their like and dislike without silly attacks and lowblows. It really pains me to say this, but maybe we don't need any live action movie threads until March/April.
The series doesn't start with the arrival of Raditz. Stop being lazy and watch Dragonball.
Here's a nice positive comment left on my site. It's nice to read these.
The movie looks very promising; although the trailer itself was a bit scattered, there were scenes that even astonished me.
Sure we’d all want a movie that’s exactly as the manga and series portrays it, but let’s be serious people. A live action Dragonball movie can’t possibly cram so much information in a mere 90 minute film. Even if the information would be put in the movie, it would make it several hours long; thus, making it incredibly boring to even the most hardcore DBZ fan. I agree that this film distorts the db plot, but let’s be realistic about this: All dbz movies don’t necessarily follow the original plot. One way or another the straight line that is the db time line is broken and branched into several directions, kind of like parallel universes within a multiverse. This movie is just one adaptation of such a “branch” if you want to pt it in that perspective. All in all, the movie looks great so far; I was a bit disappointed with the cast chosen but as time progressed I know see the vision the db movie team had from the beginning. Can’t wait for more details!!

If challenge had a taste, you'd be quite delicious.

I wouldn't mind a temporary "live-action thread" outlawing, but ultimately that decision's up to EX.
I agree, these live action threads just seem to devolve into mud-slinging once we hit a certain point. (Which is why I pretty much stopped posting in this one.) We all have our opinions, but its not right when people start trying to push their own opinions onto others and insulting people simply because they don't agree with them.
Opinions =/ Facts.
On hiatus.
Finally, a practical use for Ctrl-Alt-Del.
"Abortion?" "Piece of shit?" It's that kind of cynical and inappropriate, mislabeling and outright purposeful ignorance of any positive points that's got me teetering on avoiding these conversations with the "anti-" side altogether. Not because of any actual argument or reasoning behind it, but because several members can't seem to express themselves decently.
Though to be fair, there's plenty of it on the "pro-" side, too, if not nearly as venomous in nature. If you ask me, such methods aren't giving either side a very good rep. The movie keeps some things straight from the manga, and drops or changes others. So? Who are we to decide what is or isn't "DragonBall" anyway? I don't see why anyone would let themselves get so worked up about it either way. Is arguing over the degree to which some movie sticks to the same story we've read and watched over and over again really so important that we're resorting to such nasty tactics in regards to a short, crappy promo that we weren't even meant to see?
The sort of behavior that both sides have made a habit of resorting to is just going beyond what's called for. If I'm not going to be dealing with people on either "side" who are willing to convey their opinions with any kind of logical, objective backing or even in a manner akin to civilized human beings, then I should probably stop bothering.
I have already decided it's useless to try to defend the movie like I did in the past. Not because it has no defendable points, but because I've come to see that not only are my standards for enjoyment overall a bit more lax than most, but also I'm apparently viewing the movie from a far different angle and attitude than most people. I'm not the kind of person to worry about concepts of "canon" or "timelines" or "explain everything." I can certainly see why others would want to strive to understand everything about their series, but I just don't see the point with something like DragonBall, where not even the creator gave it anywhere near as much thought. It just detracts from the enjoyment for me, so unless I'm doing research for my fanfic or something like that, I don't bother with it.
That's why I like GT, that's why I don't mind the FUNimation dub in some cases, and that's why I'll like this movie in April, and probably hit the midnight showing if it gets one. But since I certainly can't expect or demand everyone else to share that attitude, it looks like I should just stick to posting news and such, and allow the movie "discussions" to continue to be dominated by the yings to my yang. I don't have a big problem with people not thinking like I do, but it just pains me to see how it can't be discussed civilly.
It's a shame, because it's a very interesting topic. It should be something for actual intelligent, speculative conversation. We can't just make a "no live-action movie threads" rule, because like it or not, it's a BIG thing for the franchise right now, and certainly merits some sort of discussion. I just wish that instead of judging the movie (and so much more), for bad OR for good, based on what is or isn't translated directly from the manga, that people would just treat it as something different. Its own "canon" or "movieverse" or whatever you'd like to call it, like just about every other movie-adapted property out there. Because there's plenty within this movie that's "DragonBall," but there's also enough new material or adjusted details to differentiate it from the source and give it its own separate place in the mythos. There's absolutely nothing wrong with that. But no, we're ready to rip each other's heads off, and there's talk of boycotting the film or in some extreme cases, "Fox/Wong is ruining my life," or in some very extreme cases, "DESTROY 20TH FOX CENTURY!!!1!!" I'm not trying to target the "anti-" movie crowd and I apologize if it seems like I am, but it certainly strikes me as where the majority of the negativity and malice is stemming from, and that's what I'm becoming more concerned about.
I'm not disappointed in the movie itself one bit. What I'm growing more and more disappointed in is the DragonBall fandom and their treatment of it, and how they've gotten so uptight and allowed it to become just one more thing to divide them.
To coin a phrase,"why so serious?"

I wasn't trying to "top" anything. If nothing else, I'd hope to allow the thread to continue by cooling some heads.

Guys I'm uploading something you may want to see!
A forum member on my site just proved that if the scenes are arranged properly, better music and sound effects are used, and if there are no character title cards, then the trailer can be EPIC.
I'm uploading it to YouTube. It's definitely better than the trailer we got.

So about the only thing that would be missing from this version would be LaFontaine's touch? Hmm. I guess that sounds interesting enough.JAPPO wrote:Guys I'm uploading something you may want to see!

I don't see what's so serious about saying that an upcoming movie looks to be rather bad based on the information so far revealed. I think the main problem with these threads is that some people are acting as if this movie were their own child or something.SSj Kaboom wrote:To coin a phrase,"why so serious?"

Sometimes, I tweet things
We might, if they screamed all the time, for no good reason.

Or in reverse, that the original series is their own child, and the movie is somehow threatening to harm it or take it away. By "serious," I mean, "overzealous and angry at each other over something so ultimately trivial."Herms wrote:I don't see what's so serious about saying that an upcoming movie looks to be rather bad based on the information so far revealed. It has almost no resemblence to Dragonball. The are not making minor changes. This is simply leasing a name and slapping it on an unrelated movie. There was nothing in that trailer that had even a passing resemblence to Dragonball. I dont hate the movie. Fox is doing another shitty movie based on a comic. At last Dragonball has close to twenty animated fils and 500 tv episodes. Fantastic Four and X-Men never got that.SSj Kaboom wrote:<snip>
What I do hate is people defending this shit. From the start people defending this crap have been wrong. They changed almost the entire back story. None of the characters bare even a passing resemblence to the real deals. At this point you have to look very hard to find anything that makes it Dragonball. Thats a great deal different than having to remove all Cold War elements from Iron Man's origin.
Is the rest of the movie going to somehow look completely different than whats in that trailer? Will it somehow look like Dragonball? I'm guessing the answer is no.
Thank you. I appreciate the help in getting my point across.Victator Supreme wrote:It has almost no resemblence to Dragonball. The are not making minor changes. Would you mind snipping or resizing the majority of my quoted post, though? It's a pain to scroll through.

That's his point. We have people on both sides who are taking the potential of the movie to be good or bad to the extreme and bickering with each other to what seems to be no end over it.Herms wrote:I don't see what's so serious about saying that an upcoming movie looks to be rather bad based on the information so far revealed. It's just a movie. It could be awesome. It could be the worst pile of crap ever. We won't know for sure until it's out and we've all seen it for ourselves. Until then, it's not an appropriate cause for drama (if indeed there ever IS an appropriate cause, but that's not my point).
And... that's about it. I'm pretty sure I'm being redundant here...
