Gure!

Post by Tanooki Kuribo » Mon Mar 23, 2009 10:37 pm

So, I was looking through the Neko Majin Kanzenban and came across something interesting. In the second chapter we see these odd looking alien's who's features are so close to Gure its uncanny. Could these aliens be of Gure's species? I think it's possible.

I don't know Japanese so I can't translate anything. But, I really wanted to get the ball rolling on this. Thoughts?

Yeah, they are. I forget what the species' name is if it was given, or if people just theorized what they were.

I think Mr Toriyama's drawn them in something else too, hasn't he?

Edit: Ah, found this. It's from the Dragon Ball Wikia though, so I can't vouch for the validity of any of it.
There is speculation that the "remote star" where Tarble meets Gure is in fact the planet Raudo. This is evidenced by Gure's appearance closely resembling that of aliens featured in Awawa World, Dr. Slump, Neko Majin ga Iru 2 and later a one-panel appearance in Neko Majin Z 2. Gure also bears a striking resemblance to a typical Picchi in Akira Toriyama's 2000 manga Sand Land.

Yeah, there must have been a connection when Gure was being designed... a subliminal one, at least.

Yeah, this was noted back when the special first came out, especially by Dayspring (and I bet 8 dollars that that entry from the DragonBall Wiki that Bussani quoted was either written by Dayspring or taken straight from something he wrote). While the name "Raudo" seems to be spurious (based off what may be incorrect info from Japanese Wikipedia) it is true that Toriyama's used that same basic design in several places, such as Neko Majin, Sandland (for a non-alien race), and Gure.

Oh, and for the record the aliens from Neko Majin are given no name.

That race also appeared in Sand Land.

They were called "Picchi"

The name "Raudo Seijin" supposedly comes from Awawa World... but that doesn't really help, does it?

How many chapters did Neko Majin run for? I thought I had read all of it, but I don't recognize the pages in that picture.

There were eight chapters in total: Neko Majin ga Iru, Neko Majin ga Iru 2, Neko Majin Mike, and Neko Majin Z 1-5. The scans are from Neko Majin ga Iru 2.

I don't think this explains Gure's race, but just explains that Toriyama likes reusing certain designs for characters. Maybe I'm wrong, but I doubt Toriyama thought about where Gure came from very much at all. If you asked him, he'd probably respond with something like "What? The aliens in Neko Majin and Gure? Uh yeah sure, they're related. Why not?"

Huh?

Anyhoo, there's not a shred of evidence that supports that the name of the race or planet is "Raudo." Unless Toriyama or whoever rejected Awawa World confirms that that's where they came from/are called, I don't trust any source as no source would have access to the Awawa World manga. And from what little we've seen of Awawa World, these aliens aren't hinted as showing up.

To my knowledge, here's everywhere we've seen them:
-Awawa World (rumored)
-Neko Majin Ga Iru 2
-Neko Majin Z2 (the only other fan to get Thunderbolt's autograph)
-Toccio The Angel
-Dr Slump (the special chapter Toriyama wrote for Shonen Jump in 2007/8 to promote the Slumpbox; OVA/movie 11 based on this chapter)
-Dragonball Online (the Yardrat have their chara design)
-Sandland (they represent the vast majority of the Picchi people)
-The DB special (Gure)

Can somebody translate the entire panel that's been zoomed in? I think the French version mistranslated it, so I really want to know what "sad story" they're talking about.

If Mr Toriyama is anything like Mr Tezuka then he's using his characters as "actors" throughout his stories.

Awesome, never recognized before, maybe because I read Neko Majin a long time ago before the 2008 special, so I wasn't focused on this detail))))

But when everyone is bothered about how Vegeta managed get along with Bulma, I really don't get the fuck about Gure and Tarble
