Sayain Racism and Prejudice

Post by otakutrevan » Sat May 30, 2009 1:41 am

During the time the Z fighters were on Namek,Bardock Father of Goku and even a filler scene during the Garlic Jr saga with Vegeta in space we learned quickly that Freeza and various alien races looked down on the saiyans and mocked them by calling them "monkeys". My question is that why would the backbone of Freezas forces be made fun and somewhat mistreated? Any ideas or theories on this? Discuss

They weren't really the "backbone." They were just another race as a whole that worked for him, and there were plenty of other races that were naturally stronger. Nothing special. In fact, starting to BECOME special ended up as their undoing.

Even this there were other physically disgusting and odd alien races that could have been put on social blast. I'm thinking that Freeza may have started the "monkey" and everyone else joined in to seem cool? lol

Now that I really think about it, the way Freeza treats the Saiya-Jin can be translated as him being racist and or prejudice. His "nick name" for the Saiya-Jin does sound kinda...hateful.

I think it's because nobody got to keep their homeworld and general way of life except for the Saiyans. All the fighters under Freeza were forced into service, whereas the Saiyans happily accepted it all. So, there's probably a bit of jealousy in the picture.

Well you can't say that the Saiya-Jin were the only ones to keep their homeworld. There wasn't much for them to lose, in the first place. They already fight, so maybe some of the Saiya-Jin thought that they were living the good life, while of course hating Freeza?

I don't think that is true. There were other races who produced individuals stronger than saiyans. But on average the saiyans are much stronger than other races. Facing a large group of them was one of the reasons Freeza destroyed the planet.

I always took it a Freeza’s attempt to belittle the Saiyans because he knew that his control over them was not 100%. The Saiyans were a very proud people and Freeza knew that the only reason they obeyed was his superior strength. Yet, he eventually came to realize that they were getting stronger and that they possessed the potential to birth the Super Saiyan, so he attempted to keep them weak psychologically. Everyone else just joined in because of Freeza. In addition, from what we can tell the Elites was the only ones that made an effort to demean the Saiyans and they were composed of a number of races.
The Saiyans are very much like the Klingons and Jem'Hadar.

Well...one reason might be because they have tails...like monkeys. It's been touched upon in Dragon Ball, how Son Goku's been made out to be a "monkey boy". Bulma calls him "monkey boy" or something like that, even Goku acts like a monkey in his match against Kame-Sen'nin in the 21st Tenka'ichi Budokai. He's even loosely based on Sun Wukong, the Monkey King.

I don't think it's racist. It's just a name that Freeza and other alien races tease the Saiyans with to make them seem inferior to them because monkeys are seen to be...inferior to humans? Like Saiyans are inferior to Freeza? Goku gets called a monkey loads of times in Dragon Ball (although it wasn't really to tease him, just to make light of the fact that he has a tail like a monkey's).

You are asking why anyone would insult the Saiyans? There are plenty of reasons for that... isn't it implied multiple times in the series that Saiyans were not a well-liked people? Arrogant, self-serving, greedy, bloodthirsty... King Kai explained this to Goku at the beginning of the Saiyan saga. I was under the impression that Saiyans were, for the most part, widely feared and hated throughout their history. As for Freeza, he was fearful of the Saiyan's potential (and perhaps even jealous) and probably found that belittling the Saiyans was a good way to keep them feeling inferior while disguising his own inhibitions. By belittling an already widely feared and powerful race, Freeza can only make himself look even more powerful to the rest of his empire. Zarbon and Dodoria follow Freeza's example, as their job is to enforce everything he says.

I wouldn't call the Saiyans 'the backbone of Freeza's forces' either. Freeza never respected the Saiyans; he merely used them to expand his empire- something he probably did to a lot of other races. I for one never got the impression that Freeza's disrespect was exclusive only to Saiyans... he probably treated all of his soldiers that way.
