Bulma/Yamcha
Bulma/Yamcha
When Future Trunks is talking to Goku about the future he says in the VIZ manga, and I quote:
"Yamcha was... um, not always faithful. She got fed up and broke up with him for good. Then she saw my father, sitting all alone, and it just... happened."
I read that in the Japanese anime he says that Yamcha was kind of a playboy.
How about in the Japanese manga? What exactly does he say?

I don't have the right manga volumes to check, but presumably the same thing as in the Japanese anime. The translations for the Japanese subtitle track on the Funi DVDs is more accurate than the translation in the Viz manga.

I think it can also mean just being flirtatious though.

Like I said in another topic, this is the only explanation the author ever gives the reader regarding the matter. There is no logic in him providing the reader with an explanation other than what happened.
Furthermore there is nothing in the manga that contradicts this statement since this is the only time the matter is addressed.
Other than that there is only our personal opinions of what the characters would do.
The only information in the manga regarding why they broke up is this.
Besides, I think it makes sense that Yamcha cheated or flirted with other women. It makes the situation much more logical and human.
I actually think I like Yamcha better for it. It makes him human, it gives him a flaw in his character (I always thought that his personality was the most generic of them all. This actually makes him a more interesting character in my opinion.)
And it makes the story of how Trunks came to be and the birth of the Bulma/Vegeta relationship much more believable and human:
Bulma breaks up with Yamcha because he cheated or flirted with other women.
(The exact quote from Viz manga is this: "Yamcha was... um, not always faithful. She got fed up and broke up with him for good. Then she saw my father, sitting all alone, and it just... happened."
As was answered in this topic this is a good translation).
Afterwards she saw Vegeta and probably because she was "needy" and because she likes bad boys it just happened.
She didn`t plan to get pregnant, so Trunks was a mistake. But she kept him. That much is obvious.
She later talks about Vegeta, when she is showing the gang her baby: "How should I know? You think I`d live with that jerk?!"
So from this we can conclude that at this moment she doesn't especially care for Vegeta, and she doesn`t even want to live with him because she is fully aware that he is a jerk. What happened between her and Vegeta was just a physical thing in the aftermath of her breakup.
She only grows fond of Vegeta much later when he becomes more sociable after getting used to Earth and after Goku`s death fighting Cell. And so they start to grow closer together in the years that separate the Cell saga from the buu saga, especially since he is the father of her child and because she likes bad boys.

I thought this was worth mentioning. While it is true that Trunks said that Yamcha cheated on Bulma, wouldn't it be the Yamcha from the alternate timeline?
Meaning that the Yamcha from the mainstream timeline, could have broken up with Bulma over another set of circumstances. Trunks even says and it was proven numerous times that his presence in the past could cause changes to the future. Just a thought.

Ah, but there kind of is. This is how Trunks changed the future. And it is in the manga.rereboy wrote:Thats true.
But there is no way to verify that. And since Trunks was born exactly as he should I just assume that the situation with Yamcha went as it should, without changes.
After Trunks told Goku about his parents, Goku is about to leave:
Goku "Bulma, take care of the baby"
Krillin "Baby...? Bulma are you pregnant?"
Bulma "No! What planet is he on?"
Yamcha "I know what he's trying to say. It's time for us to stop stalling, get married, and create a happy family. Ha Ha! That big lug's gotten smoother than I thought!"
Goku introduced future knowledge that was not available in Trunk's timeline. Yamcha pretty much asked Bulma to marry him right then and there. He didn't cheat. At least in the mainstream timeline. And considering how she felt about Yamcha (going back to DB) she does'nt take him up on it?
Knowing Bulma, she probrably didn't want to get married and Yamcha broke up with her. When he came back, she had Vegeta's baby. Which is why he was pissed in the Android Saga.
Another thing, keep in mind (and I have to say this in bold) You are talking about a woman who flirted with Vegeta on Namek. The same Vegeta who was responsible for killing Yamacha, her friends, and Piccolo. And would have killed her if he had the chance. And you're taking what she told Trunks at face value? I weep for you rereboy. Blabbermouth Bulma has struck again.

Yes, but we have no way to know if that alone changed the course of their relationship or not. It might, indeed.
As for flirting... Bulma flirts with everybody... That`s just her... That doesn`t mean that Yamcha did nothing at all. From Trunks quote he must have. Did he cheat? Or was it something like staring or flirting and Bulma overreacted? We don`t know and everybody will have an opinion on that.
However I do think that Yamcha did something or the author would be not telling the truth in the Trunks dialog which, I think, has no logic since it seems to me that he`s clearly just telling what happened and not giving us a personal opinion of bulma.
It would be weird, in my opinion, to tell us something that its just the opinion of a character and not the truth, in the only time he explains what happened.

I understand where you are coming from. Honestly, I do. But consider this. In future Trunk's timeline, Goku died and they did not know about the androids. So yeah, I can believe that Yamcha might have cheated on Bulma. However, in the mainstream timeline, I believe Yamcha spent his time training to face the androids. I think Yamcha (at this point in the story) would be more serious about his training instead of cheating on Bulma.
Also, when the heroes gather after their training and see baby Trunks for the first time, they assume it's Yamcha's. To which he says:
Yamcha "Don't blame this on me. We broke up a long time ago. You're not going to believe who the father is."
Goku tells everyone it's Vegeta, and then Bulma says something very odd:
Bulma "H-how'd you know that? I haven't told anyone that yet!"
Now wait a minute. Yamcha and Tien are obviously with Bulma before Goku and company arrive. Yamcha is pissed and knows who the baby's father is. But Bulma herself says she hasn't told anyone yet. So how does Yamcha know about Bulma having Vegeta's baby without her knowing? Someone was cheating. But I don't think it was Yamcha.
Also keep in mind. We know Vegeta was staying and training at Capsule Corp since after the battle with Freeza, so I find it more plausible that it could have been on Bulma's part the cheating was done. Or as some fanfics claim, Vegeta could've just took her (and Yamcha walked in on it).
In either case if Yamcha caught Bulma cheating, it would explain why they broke up, how he knew about Vegeta being the father (without her telling him), and why he was pissed.

Was that scene in the manga?Bura wrote:Well, in episode 123 Yamcha is actually shown looking at girls with a pervy face. So I'm guessing Trunks was pretty accurate.

What, a man can't look at other attractive women without being a dog? I think not, my friend.Bura wrote:Well, in episode 123 Yamcha is actually shown looking at girls with a pervy face. So I'm guessing Trunks was pretty accurate.

Well, it did imply something =P It's not like we see Tenshinhan having these moments occasionally. He also didn't seem to dislike Maron's moves towards him.Pain wrote:What, a man can't look at other attractive women without being a dog? Yes, I do realize this is all filler, but I think the animators did want to imply that Yamcha really did cheat at some point.

Yeah, I feel like they may have done that in the anime just to make the breakup more believable which is understandable, but I still didn't like it. In the manga Yamucha was always portrayed as a really straightforward guy, I mean, he was even afraid of women at first. Nothing was even implied before the Cell arc except that he was popular with girls, for obvious reasons. I think it's pretty safe to assume that Bulma overreacted to something small like she always does and just used it to break up with him since she probably already had the hots for Vegeta anyway. That I don't mind, it's just in her character, but I don't appreciate the change in Yamucha's character.

Well if you go by the anime, it seems more plausible that Bulma slept with Vegeta during the time she was nursing him back to health moreso than Yamcha cheating on her.Bura wrote:Yes, I do realize this is all filler, but I think the animators did want to imply that Yamcha really did cheat at some point.
Does she ever say that Yamcha cheated on/broke up with her prior to this?

Personally I assumed that that "nobody" meant "nobody from the gang prior to this meating".
I assumed that Bulma and Yamcha broke up a long time before that meating, like Yamcha said.
But when it was time to meet with the gang she showed up there with her kid.
Who were the first to arrive there? Bulma, Yamcha and Tien. I always thought that Bulma just told Yamcha and Tien on that spot before Goku arrived. And that`s why Yamcha is so upset. To find out that his ex has a child of Vegeta
Prior to that she told nobody except Vegeta (because he wasn`t at the meeting but he knows that he has a son) and almost certainly her parents.
Since she told nobody from the gang prior to that meeting (except Vegeta), she was surprised that Goku guessed that Vegeta was the father. Otherwise, if she told anyone prior to the meeting I think that she would just assume that that somebody told Goku.
That is just filler. However, the author contributed greatly to the anime. Perhaps that was his idea. Who knows?Bura wrote:Well, in episode 123 Yamcha is actually shown looking at girls with a pervy face. So I'm guessing Trunks was pretty accurate.
Was that episode before Trunks or after?

I think they were still together at that point, last thing we saw of Yamcha in that episode was when Bulma digged Vegeta out of the remains of the pod just looking at them.

I always felt sorry for Yamcha in that scene... I think their break-up was not too long after that.
But yeah, that's just filler and speculation of course.
