Anime/manga timeline differences

Discussion, generally of an in-universe nature, regarding any aspect of the franchise (including movies, spin-offs, etc.) such as: techniques, character relationships, internal back-history, its universe, and more.

Anime/manga timeline differences

Post by Herms » Wed Dec 23, 2009 1:56 am

So I'm starting to work on what will eventually become the Kanzentai timeline, and one of the things I want to work out are the differences between the manga and anime timelines. For instance, one big thing is that in the manga, each Tenkaichi Budoukai takes place over a single day, while in the anime some of them are several days. For instance, looking through Daizenshuu 3's episode summaries, it seems the 22nd TB is at least 3 days: Tsuru-sennin tries to kill Goku during the night sometime after Kuririn and Chaozu's match but before Goku's first match, and then the final match seems to have an entire seperate day devoted to it. So that would give you:

Day 1: preliminaries, Tenshinhan vs. Yamcha, Man-Wolf vs. Jacky Chun, Kuririn vs. Chaozu. Tsuru-sennin attacks Goku during the night
Day 2: Goku vs. Pan-Poot, Tenshinhan vs. Jacky Chun, Goku vs. Kuririn
Day 3: Tenshinhan vs. Goku, Kuririn dies, etc.

Is that right, or are there any other days in there? Then with the 23rd TB, in the anime everyone meets up the day before the tournament, but then I think the entire tournament itself is one day. With the 21st, I don't remember at all. Anyone know?

There's also the whole thing with Gregory: in the manga, it takes Goku 40 days to catch Bubbles, but in the anime he catches Bubbles after only 3 weeks, and then takes the rest of the 40 day period to hit Gregory.

Are there any other major differences between the anime and manga timelines? I don't mean simply any manga/anime contradiction, but stuff like events happening over a difference number of days than in the manga, or happening in a different order, or things like that. I'm not as familiar with the anime as I am with the manga, so I'd really appreciate any input with this.

Kanzenshuu: Is that place still around?
Sometimes, I tweet things
We might, if they screamed all the time, for no good reason.

The 21st took place in one day in the anime. There was a scene where it was dark, but that was just because it was raining with heavy clouds.

As for the 23rd, the registration was the day before the preliminaries. If I remember correctly, the preliminaries and the tournament were all one day in that one.

Dude, no way. The 21st is two days in the anime. Are you sure? I could have sworn Giran mentions that he is going to fight Goku "tomorrow."

I just did a quick check and didn't notice anything like that. Goku and Giran face off, Roshi stops them and reminds Giran about the prize money, Giran says that beating Goku there or in the ring are the same thing anyways, then he leaves. Then there's a shot of the bar where they were when it becomes sunny, which to me implies that this happened a bit later, since there'd be no reason to show the bar if it were the next day.
Not a problem.
