Favourite Art Style in the series

Post by BobZ » Sun Mar 14, 2010 2:43 pm

So, what's your favourite? It doesn't matter whether it's from DB, Z or GT. And either way, Toei tends to use some of the styles throughout the whole series anyways. And yes, we are talking anime wise here, as I still haven't read the manga, although I do know that the anime tends to mimic it.

So, go for it and provide screens if you can. :)

Guess I'll start first then.

Here are some shots of Episode 078, taken from my Dragon Box. This is the art style that I would like to have seen from episode 001 to 291 without change. I also thought this to be Akira-sensei's original and only art, but I was proven wrong after reading some posts and also taking a look at some manga shots. Anyways, it's still the one drawing style I find to be most awesome for my taste.
Note that the pics are probably the wrong resolution, but I took them with MPC and was lazy to mess around with settings.
I also would've liked to show you more pics from different episodes with the same art, but I'm too lazy to do that too now.
I promise that I'll provide more pics, including other favourite and less favourite art styles from the anime.

Now, it's your turn. :)

The early episodes of DBZ, and Movie 1. The art style is DB & DBZ, but in the middle.

I really like the 23rd Tenkaichi Budoukai era to early-mid Freeza arc art style. It looks more flexible. :3

The best art style for me is right from the beginning where Goku meets Bulma up until the beginning of the 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai. To me it just seems so pure and unmessed with, that was when Toriyama enjoyed drawing DragonBall to the max; where wanted to devote more time to the series than when he was being rushed by Toei's deadlines. I believe this is where we saw the most detail with his art.

I'm definitely going to agree with the topic creator here. I absolutely love how this episode is drawn. This one, or the Vegeta v Recoom fight or episode 120 (Trunks' transformation).

Also, anyone notice Freeza's OBSCENELY huge left hand?

I think my favorite style is from the the 23rd Tenkaichi Budoukai to the end of the Saiyan arc. I like how it translated well into the first DBZ movie.

He seems to have concentrated a lot of power there.

Anyways, one of these days I'm going to pull out the DBOXes again to take some more snaps from episodes with the same art. And it would also be nice to show some of the different art styles as well. All in due time. :P

Yeah, some parts in Z just look downright bad. GT was alright though.

I like GT's style (it's pretty much the same as Buu saga's though).

Personally, my favourite art style of the series is from late-DB to early-DBZ (22nd Tenka'ichi Budokai Arc--Saiyan Arc). I think that was when Toriyama was at his peak of artistic drawing; the art looks so detailed, and, like Scarz said, the simple, rounded character designs are pleasing to look at. It seems like Toriyama enjoyed drawing so much more than in the later parts of the series (Cell Arc to Boo Arc), when the characters just looked so hard-lined and rigid. I really dislike the way Toriyama's art had evolved in those parts of the series. Freeza Arc wasn't perfect, but at least in the Freeza Arc, it still retained some of Toriyama's original art style.

I like the art style from the 23rd Tenka'ichi Budoukai the best.

Quite a few say that, I don't know why I didn't like it as much :(.

I haven't watched the whole of DB, but from what I've seen the art at the end of the anime was really at its peak. :)

Haha, I think that's just in the foreground, but it does look pretty silly.

Anyway, my favorite is from the beginning of DB through the early Freeza stuff. I love the roundness of the early stuff, and when it starts getting a little more angular, it still looks really cool and might be the best. But from the end of the Freeza arc on, everything got far too angular and muscular for my taste.

I doubt Kai's Animation was unique since the JSAT in 2008.
