Thinking About Starting a Fansite

Post by Innagadadavida » Mon Jun 07, 2010 10:07 pm

I'm kind of mulling over the idea of starting a fansite of my own. It would be all about Dragon Ball obviously. I'm curious to see if there is anybody out there interested in joining me. I have my own taste and interests, in regard to Dragon Ball and the fandom itself, so the kind of content on my site will differ from Daizenshuu EX and Kanzentai. But I'm not interested in competing with 'em... Afterall, how can I compete with these guys? They're amazing :P. Rather, I'm interested in covering areas of the frachise that these guys do not.

That's right. I'm thinking about covering a lot of dub related things, in addition to original Japanese things. I'm also interested in documenting and reviewing all kinds of fanstuff. From AMVs, to Fanart, to Fandubs. I would also like to document and cover Toriyamas influences. These are just a few items on my list.

Technically speaking, I am a proficient web designer. I haven't been keeping up with modern browsers and that fancy new HTML5, but I feel like I could build on my current knowledge fairly easily. I also enjoy writing (though I'm not very good at it), I can see myself writing a lot a lot on various topics.

So, I'm posting this here because I would like to gauge interest. Who here would visit a site that contains all that I've mentioned so far? Who here would be interested in contributing to the site? Who would be interested in becoming a full fledged staff member if this idea ever gets out of the "will I do this" stage (this would include spending your own money with absolutely nothing in return other than your work getting out there [I'm up for that]).

Something to bare in mind is that, I myself, have a job, a life, and am involved with a few other projects. So I probably would not update frequently. Probably about as much as or less than VegettoEX, Herms, and Hujio do on their own sites.

Alright, please respond! :D

Count me in! I'd love to be part of a Dragon Ball fan site.

Well, there's more to it than just being a part of it. I want some real passion. Real thought and effort. What kind of things would you contribute? What do you think of the ideas I have so far?

Well, I conisder my self a dubbie and a subbie since I flip flop between both. I could probably do some compare and contrast features on the site. I would really want to make an episode guide with both titles (dub title and original Japanese) since I don't see that much on sites. I really just want to cotribute to both sides of the fandom. I realized from your post that you wanted some AMVs, fandubs, and fanart. But don't you think we could also just help some people out who want some info on what happens in what episode? I would love to make a lot of things for this site and these are some of my ideas. I have a lot more I could probably think of but right now, this is what I've got.

I think you should make a Dragon Ball Kai Uncensored section that looks like DBZUncensored.

I'd be willing to contribute the fandubs, fanart, AMV's etc. you need. Also if you were to ever need someone to have interviews, etc. with other fandubbers, abridgers I'd be glad to help.

But, I wouldn't be able to help with money, until I actually get money. Once that happens I'd be all up for helping financially.

Also, agree with Shadowdude about the sub and dub idea.

I'll provide the hentai and the FULL EPZ.

Edit: Well Scarz probably wants to be in charge of the hentai.

A site that isn't called "DB Wikia" that focuses parts on the dub, count me in. :P

So, when you guys say you're in, do you mean you are in on participating in creating content? Or are you in on, you'll visit the site and use it for reference? I'm looking for some feedback on the idea, so I would appreciate some more thoughts. What kind of things are you looking for in a Dragon Ball site? What kind of content would you be willing to create? What can you contribute that others can't?

This is a high quality production I'm thinking about. I'm hoping for a little more enthusiasm. Otherwise I don't think I'll do it. I would be investing some of my own time in it, so I want to know if people are really going to enjoy something like this.

I'm in on this since I want to create content. I want a site that compares dubs but doesn't just say "Oh, this one sucks." I want to add some lines that make no sense, really.

I would definately visit the site, but I just don't know what I could do for it content-wise. I do have a pretty good knowledge of the Japanese side of DB (character names, attack names etc.), but know virtually nothing when it comes to web design.

What you need to do is to:

- Create a main staff consisting of you and two other persons. In this way you can divide the workload. Be sure to get people you know, who don't screw you over and say: "I don't care about the site anymore". You can expect the three of you to be responsible for the finances. The main staff are responsible for updates, and the sections. Getting more than three would hurt more than help (think of the saying: "The more cooks, the worse the soup").

- Get a domain name and divide the expected costs between you three.

- Are you going to have a large website and host large files? Then you should arrange finances for a server, or to rent/borrow one.

- Fix a Paypal account and a Paypal donation button. This should help you out with the finances a bit.

- Get a circle of members that regularly add some content, like editorials and whatnot, it you are up to that. And remember to let people to post quality stuff, even though they aren't contributing much to the site normally. This will make more people interested in contributing, especially if they are not that keen on doing that very often.

- Keep the spirits up! It will take some time until your site becomes big, and it's no walk on roses either.

New to the forum? Just want to know when you'll hit your next posting rank? Ever wondered why some users have special titles, and what they mean? The answers to all these questions and more are waiting for you in the Kanzenshuu Member Hierarchy Guide!!

I think a great idea would be to set up a multi-user blog community. Let everyone join and write whatever they want, and promote the best stuff to the front-page. (for example, see D-Toid).

-edit, seeing Godo's list, I think an easier route would be to install a multi-user CMS (I know Wordpress 3 has multi-user built in, earlier versions need some tweaking) and set yourself as admin (well, leave 'admin' alone and make yourself another account with full access). Set user registration to allow posting on their sub-blog, and promote the best stuff (just copy-paste to the main-blog, really) the users create to the main site's front-page.

This way, you don't have to worry about who to choose to give access to, or having enough people to write enough content. Just let everyone write whatever they want and promote the best stuff.

Having written that out, I kind of want to do it now.

I'd honestly do both. I like to create content and look at what else the site has to offer.

In a Dragon Ball site, since we've got Daizex and Kanzentai; another Dragon Ball fansite in my opinion could be better by being more multimedia, user-content based.

It was a joke my friend. I was mocking websites that do this kind of thing.

Sounds very much like an extension of what we were all trying to do a decade ago with our "Editorials" sections. We didn't realize that we were blogging ourselves and simultaneously promoting user-generated content from our audience, but that's exactly what it was.

The problem with that is... does anyone care for something like that these days (specifically with regards to DragonBall)? I mean, sure, they might... I just have no idea. Then again, the best way to start a site is to do what you want to do, audience be damned... and if you happen to find one over time, that's great!

I'd love to contribute towards this site, aside from content I can offer any javascript coding that you may need so shout out to me if you ever need something like that done. I'm also a dub fan of the show so any dub content you may need up for comparison I'll be able to present you content.
Actions have reactions so don't be quick to judge, you may not know the hardships that people don't speak of.
